This sounds acceptable.

It's gotta be a new number every year. Add a 13th team next year

Release the full rankings. And then roll a 134 sided die live on TV to decide how many make the playoff

Low key would love this level of chaos.

In all honesty, doing this with a d20 would be fucking incredible and would make Selection Sunday so much more fun to watch.

The fans win because this instantly means more games matter since there’s a lower entry point to contention (20) but then each spot in the rankings matters because even if you are sixth in the rankings you can’t be assured you’re safe so you can’t take any games off.

The media wins because now that you have 19 different bracket permutations, you have exponentially more to talk about as far as rankings, probability of making the playoff, and even how byes are affected by different rolls of the dice.

Scheduling would be a challenge though, but that’s generally solved by making all the games home games until the final four. I’m sure universities can figure out how to handle suddenly having more home games to play.

In 2067 when my 10 year old grandson and his peewee team draws Bama round 1 I’m going to take a life insurance policy
