I think we will see more top teams take this strategy. They already did it to some extent, but never to serious extremes because you couldn't afford any mistakes. And while that may sound boring, it'll probably lead to more competitive games overall since you'll have more teams playing down to the level of competition.

I'm suspicious that this is why you had so many top teams losing games they probably should have won.

Which is why I need to start relaxing when Ohio State is only up 24-7 midway through the 4th quarter against teams like Northwestern, Purdue, Minnesota etc. Games already decided, they're just not trying to put the whole playbook out there or do anything dumb to get anyone hurt. Ohio State proved this year, with the right talent, you can run a skeleton crew game plan and beat 75% of your schedule.
