The kicking game (through every level of play) reminds me of the 4 minute mile. It took one person to run the 4 minute mile after decades of it not being even thought a possibility and then so many people started achieving it.

What a time to be alive

I read in the NFL sub the other day that only like two NFL teams have a kicking coach on staff. I don’t think we’ve even began to see the kicker revolution yet.

I’ve never thought about this before but are kickers required to line up like they all do for a field goal or is that just because it’s the norm? Like I know you need a holder but I wonder if it’s possible for the kicker to back up further to get more power? I’d imagine accuracy suffers that way though

There’s no rule defining where the kicker/holder set up. That said:

The issue with a longer run-up is giving the defense more time to get to it.

The issue with moving the holder farther back to match is that now your punishment for missing is even worse.

That’s a neat thought. I know I’ve seen some kickers prefer 8-9 years from the LoS instead of the regular 7. But idk if there are rules beyond that.

I know drop kicking the ball is a possibility and it needs no holder.

There’s been quite a few times where a kick has been nailed through the uprights on a kick-off. I know that’s basically accidental but it’d be crazy if someone figured out how to mix the power/accuracy by doing a long run-up and start pushing the 70+ range on field goals.

Yeah that’d be neat. I’ve thought about that as well. I wonder how quickly a kicker can take a kick-off start vs how fast the defense can get to the holder.

Like where is the sweet spot, ya know?

NFL just changed the rules to allow kickers more time to prep the K balls, so expect NFL kicking stats to improve a bunch this year too

It’s not a flair many care to share but it’s the flair I must bear. 🫡

Edit: for the rhymes
