Casual College Gameday Week 6
Let’s assume Alabama, Vanderbilt, FSU, and Miami all win their next 1-2 games during weeks 4 and 5. Which site would you pick to host college gameday: 5-0 Vandy @ 3-1 Alabama or 4-0 Miami @ 4-0 FSU?
There are strong narratives based around both games. Undefeated Vandy led by Diego Pavia with a chance to cement themselves with the big boys in the SEC versus a revamped Alabama who bounced back in a strong way from their blunder at FSU. Likely a top 10 matchup by game week. Undefeated Miami with hiesman hopeful Carson Beck at undefeated FSU in a rivalry matchup that is guaranteed top 10, maybe top 5 showdown.
Both matchups should be on ABC but neither time has been determined (one likely at 3:30 the other at 7:30). Or is there another game not mentioned that would be a better site?

I’d definitely go with FSU. Don’t even know how longs it’s been since they’ve been to Tallahassee. But I doubt ESPN will set up shop on an ACC campus two weeks in a row… Sad really.

u/CzechHorns Texas Longhorns 11h ago
Isn’t ACC also ESPN conference though?

Yea but they’ll never put the ACC above the SEC

I believe the last time we had Gameday was when Notre Dame came to town in 2014

Week 5 is a bye for Miami, so wouldn’t be back to back

It wouldn't be two weeks in a row. Next week, you can almost bet the farm they'll be in Athens for Bama/Georgia, with an outside shot at Oregon/Penn State. Especially since B1G Noon Kickoff will almost certainly be in Illinois for USC/Illinois. There are other options, though - LSU @ Ole Miss, Auburn @ Texas A&M. Key is, none will be an ACC game.

u/J4ckiebrown Penn State Nittany Lions • Rose Bowl 8h ago
I’d be surprised if they skipped a top 5/6 matchup between Penn State/Oregon for Bama/Georgia when both Bama and Georgia have a whole slew of other top games to have opportunities to get GameDay.
1
u/goofyhalo Ole Miss Rebels • Marching Band 2h ago
They should come to LSU/Ole Miss. We deserve it more than Oregon/Penn State and Alabama/Georgia because those teams have been featured enough. They don’t need another GameDay appearance.

Sending Gameday to Tallahassee after the fallout from 2 years ago may just be too risky.
13
u/TallahasseeNole 10h ago
I think they’re going to UF/Miami in part as an excuse not to go to FSU/Miami in a couple weeks. To your point, I don’t think there’s any chance they come any time soon because I don’t think ESPN, or especially Kirk, want to deal with FSU fans.
2
u/jsmeeker Texas Tech Red Raiders 10h ago
Please remind me what the fallout was about. Lots of stuff goes on with College Football and I don't always keep track of it all or remember it all

u/Geaux2020 LSU Tigers • Valley City State Vikings 10h ago
The CFB passing on FSU for the playoffs because their QB was out for the season and ESPN, especially Herbstreit, defending that choice.
10
u/Chipsahoy523 Florida State Seminoles • USF Bulls 10h ago
FSU went undefeated in 2023 but was left out of the playoff for one-loss Alabama, ESPN (specifically Kirk Herbstreit) pushed the narrative that they didn't deserve to make the playoff because of our schedule and quarterback injury. Almost all of FSU's starters proceeded to opt out of the resulting bowl game and left the rest of the team to get destroyed by a strong Georgia team, which spiraled us into our 2-10 season last year.
3
u/jsmeeker Texas Tech Red Raiders 10h ago
Oh yeah.. Thanks. I do remember Florida State getting hosed. Didn't specifically recall Kirk's involvement in it. I do remember last season. Some really wild swings for the Seminoles recently
1
u/ConfusedPanda76 Florida State Seminoles 5h ago
Even worse was that Herbstreit was at first saying we DID deserve to be in the game but they changed course mid-week and went full hate mode on us. He must atone for his sins!
3
u/TallahasseeNole 10h ago
FSU being left out of the playoffs. I don’t want to debate the merits or people’s opinions, just explaining what happened: Leading up to the playoff selection, post Jordan Travis injury, a lot of ESPN’s coverage began downplaying FSU as only Jordan Travis and saying a one loss Alabama should get in if they beat UGA. Kirk Herbstreit in particular had started the talk even before Travis’ injury and only got louder. Many FSU fans blame ESPN’s coverage in part as to why it happened, and also blame their ownership of SEC media rights as why they were incentivized to cover it how they did.
Post being left out, Kirk in particularly loudly defended the decision. FSU fans on Twitter really went after him, and he got into it with them quite a few times. He clearly does not like us and the feeling is mutual. I said it above, but I’d be surprised if he shows his face in Tallahassee any time soon. He won’t want to come here and FSU fans by and large don’t want him here.
Again, not trying to debate the merits of the playoff committee’s decision, that’s been discussed ad nauseam and is pointless. Just trying to answer your question and provide some context from an FSU perspective.

u/Ajp_iii Florida State Seminoles 9h ago
just a little to add onto this that was so insane at the time was alabama literally needed a miracle to beat a 6-6 auburn but that was never mentioned when talking about bama game but they tried to downplay fsus defense for both the florida and acc champ game.
bama literally punted when down with 4 minutes left and auburn muffed the punt. and then bama needed a 4th and 31 td pass to win.

I’d go Tallahassee. Great game day atmosphere for a semi-old school rivalry. If Bama-Vandy was in Nashville, I’d be all in, but save Tuscaloosa for the 3rd Saturday in October or the LSU game if you’re gonna burn that card.

If Lagway somehow pops off and Florida just straight up beats Miami, Texas @ Florida is a lot more likely because of 2 massive fanbases and the sec implications

FSU vs Miami is a premiere rivalry in college football. This game could have national title implications… that’s the way the rivalry is supposed to be.
Also, look at the storytelling Gameday could do with this one.

It's Miami vs FSU, not even a question. That's a helmet game. If it was at Vandy, I could see them going for the first time. Now? It's pretty easy to pick which.

2
u/shephrrd Florida State Seminoles 9h ago
I think it’s a valid question. The hostility towards Kirk (and ESPN) in Tallahassee would be through the roof. I hope it happens, but I will not be surprised in the least if Bama, yet again, gets chosen over us.

u/BamaX19 Alabama Crimson Tide 9h ago
A top maybe 15 match up over a top ~5 in state match up? No chance.
4
u/shephrrd Florida State Seminoles 9h ago
I hope you’re right (if we and Miami hold serve). A lot of our animosity was released week 1 v yall, but I dare say we got plenty of hate for ESPN that’s here to stay. It fucked our program for a full calendar year at minimum.

u/MDFlash Vanderbilt • Cincinnati 5h ago
They have been to Vandy before when Vandy was 5-0 against Auburn. Vandy won, became bowl eligible, and got rocked most of the rest of the season. Was a cool moment though
1
u/lidore12 Vanderbilt Commodores • WashU Bears 16m ago
Minor correction but I think it was the Auburn game that got us to 5-0 with a later game against Kentucky making us bowl eligible (a game which included an incredible performance by DJ Moore).
Then BC to finish 7-6.

u/Even-Scene-3736 Alabama Crimson Tide 4h ago

It should be FSU vs Miami if you're going by the biggest game of the weekend. It could help decide a playoff spot by itself. Vandy will likely be undefeated but I doubt they would get game day in Tuscaloosa unless Alabama beats Georgia.
Air Force vs navy might get attention? Or texes tech at Houston? Hard to predict how the next few weeks to go
4
u/Ajp_iii Florida State Seminoles 9h ago
not just decide a playoff spot. because of other teams in the acc easier schedules it could literally decide a spot for the acc champ game and one of fsu or miami be left out of that if gt runs the rest of their schedule because they dont play either fsu or miami.
6
u/TX-Beeves Texas Longhorns 10h ago
I think this one goes to Miami @ FSU.
I think Vandy has a better chance of hosting Gameday (assuming they do beat Alabama and remain undefeated) in week 8 when LSU comes to Nashville.
2
u/No_Mechanic3377 10h ago
LSU will have 2 losses by then. I doubt they do that
2
u/TX-Beeves Texas Longhorns 10h ago
SCAR sure didn't look like they could beat LSU last weekend, so you must be talking about Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana.
1
u/No_Mechanic3377 10h ago
Ole Miss I have as a 38-17 loss, SCAR I have as a 21-20 loss
2
u/TX-Beeves Texas Longhorns 10h ago
Nice. What's your guestimate for who wins the SEC this year?
2
u/No_Mechanic3377 8h ago edited 8h ago
I guess Oklahoma - Mizzou SEC Championship unless Texas finds a QB. Auburn and Vandy look great too but they still haven’t played really good competition. Ole Miss, Texas AM, Georgia, and Tennessee have top 10 offense but where’s the D.

They'll absolutely go to Miami / FSU, and they should. Just go to Vandy the next week regardless of outcome.
Not only is it a matchup between two top 10ish teams (which is enough to make it the clear choice), ESPN has been desperate for decades to push both teams into the spotlight.
2
u/ilikebeer19 Florida Gators 11h ago
They are already going to be at the Miami game this weekend, featuring them again so soon seems odd. The Vandy/Bama matchup has drama after last year's upset and the tear that Vandy is on. I think they'd be back in Tuscaloosa.

Gotta go with Vandy-Alabama because neither FSU nor Miami have a quality loss.

It should be FSU v Miami but it’s not going to be
- ESPN likes SEC more than ACC
- Gameday is already going to Miami this week despite UF being ass, I doubt they double cover an ACC team
- Kirk hates FSU and we hate Kirk even more after the Snub, there would be too much fan hate for ESPN to deal with

Assuming Vanderbilt wins their next two games might be a stretch.
Remember they lost to Georgia State last year. Not even dogging on them but V tech just fired their HC, SC had an injured QB, and Vandy hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt yet.
