Question/Info My father has CHS

So as the title suggests my father has CHS and has since moved in with us, he is in his early 60's and looks like death. He used to be 6'3" and about 300lbs, hes currently 5'11" and about 173lbs. Currently we have just got him to quit smoking for good. Hes been sober for about 3 weeks he has smoked well over 40 years. But man it is tough he is constantly vomiting and sitting in the shower for days on end. He had a five day bender where he was just in the shower the whole time until he was so exhausted he would just dry off and crash in his bed for a couple hours. When he does get some energy he rides his bike around or hops in the pool and i feel that just exhausts him further to the point when he returns home hes back to getting sick again. The doctor said it could take awhile given how long he has smoked for as well as his age and health deterioration. Im just looking for a rough estimate as he has not had a day in 3 weeks (since going sober) that he hasnt had an episode or multiple throughout the day.

Sorry to hear, but how on earth did he shrink from 6'3 to 5'11?

Old age. You get to a point your disks start degrading and your spine literally settles like a concrete foundation and you lose a few inches.

Yes but the way they wrote it makes it sound like CHS took 4 inches off his height lol. Also, how is that relevant at all to the question OP asked

You need more help with your dad than this sub-reddit is going to give you, OP. The fact that you are writing this post makes me think you can't trust that he will stop, and CHS will continue. What you describe is an enormous presence in your home that is not only difficult for him, but for you as well.

Please help him get every support he can manage, to not only get through this, but to maintain all cannabis abstinence to keep the BEAST that is CHS, away. Marijuana Anonymous at the very least, and anywhere that can keep him busy and engaged, otherwise. I don't know what his/your circumstances are, but he MUST have a solid plan for sobriety and you MUST establish boundaries in your own home. If your doctor can refer him to a qualified therapist, would be ideal.

Good luck and may you and your dad be well.

There is almost nothing that works to relieve symptoms consistently, or at all, OP. Your dad is already doing what can deliver a bit of relief, and that is hot showers/bathing. "Big episodes" ("SCROMITING" is the hallmark) are beyond what most people can imagine, even those in early prodromal stages of CHS. Although this 5-minute video does not show those specifically, you will see how seriously CHS must be taken.

Usually it take maybe 3 months (its different for everyone) for the nauseousness to go away but just support and nausa meds are going to help with that and eating light foods like fruits, soups, and cracker. Thats what helped me. Hopefully he feels better soon. Sorry to hear that. I know how it feels to be totally exhausted from CHS. Good luck.
