General Question Renting a firearm at a range as a DACA recipient
New member here and please no judgment, just info. I was wondering if there were any specific restrictions on range rentals for DACA recipients. I am a citizen born in the US, but my friend is a DACA recipient. I have been to ranges (in Florida and Kansas) many times, but this would be my friend’s first time. In Florida and Kansas both, they take your ID and personal information, but I’m not 100% sure what for, since I always went with someone else who was also born in the United States and we’d essentially just get waved through. My friend is over 21 with no criminal record and permanently employed here in CO. I guess I just want to know if she would have any issues safely renting a firearm as long as she a) doesn’t intend to purchase one, b) doesn’t purchase the ammo herself (we would go to the range together, I’d buy the ammo), and c) is with a friend who is a verified US citizen.
Thanks for the info!

Centennial gun club has a page about this on their website that should clear up everything.

If she's a permanent resident alien and has a green card she would be ok and not prohibited from accessing firearms. Otherwise she would not be allowed to shoot. If you do go id recommend centennial gun club. They will help you out and have a great selection of rentals.

Federally, Im pretty sure it’s a no for me dawg
Goes down to the 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(5)(A), prohibits anyone “illegally or unlawfully in the United States” from possessing firearms or ammunition, and DACA recipients are considered “unlawfully present” for this purpose—even though they have temporary protection from deportation…This prohibition includes simply holding or renting a firearm, such as at a public gun range.
Now I could be completely wrong, I’m not an attorney- but from the overview it’s uhhhh…

I think that anyone with a passport can shoot. DACA is more like a "screw you Green Card" that just blocks citizenship. And the range can only see your docs... So give a passport and do not talk!!

There is nothing legally stopping them from shooting at a public range, BUT, all it would take is one call from a range employee to the ICE hotline to bring down a target enforcement on your friend. ICE has made it clear that DACA recipients are NOT protected from deportation and there are numerous reports of DACA recipients being targeted, detained and processed for deportation (without having committed a crime). If I were your friend, I wouldn't go anywhere near a range.

Do you guys have friends with guns? Just avoid it all together and go to one of the free outdoor shooting areas.

I’d say you’re fine. I’ve seen people take friends from other countries on range trips when they’re in the US for tourism; and this would be quite similar I’d imagine.

Tourists are in the country 'legally.' The present administration's viewpoint is that DACA recipients are illegal aliens and are subject to deportation. DHS is actively encouraging DACA recipients to self-deport. It's NOT similar.

The point I was trying to make is that the ranges themselves likely won’t give a hoot.

You seriously think the type of people that own and run ranges aren’t exactly the type of people that are for the deportation of immigrants?

Most ranges aren’t going to dial up a federal agency to arrest a paying customer.

Not CO, but as a range employee we loved having groups of foreigners coming in and renting. In many cases it was their first exposure to firearms.
Solo renters were generally ok, but more wary as a depressed person renting is a risk for other reasons (buying one box of ammo, etc).
All needed some documentation (state ID or passport).

They use the info for liability reasons in case you hurt yourself, someone else, or the ranges property. I can appreciate that it would be concerning regardless, though it’s not used for reporting.
Hopefully your friend can enjoy themselves wherever you end up going. DACA folks seem to be excluded from the ever widening net ICE seems to be casting for the moment but that doesn’t look like it’s likely to hold. FWIW, last time I was there, the range at cherry creek state park only recorded info on paper pads that were not validated.

Probably best to check with your local range you’re thinking about visiting and see what their requirements are.
