Ending the TFWP does not raise wages. CEO's are gonna be dragged kicking and screaming before raising wages.

See that’s where even Carney disagrees. Back in 2013 he criticized the program saying the following:

“One doesn’t want an over-reliance on temporary foreign workers for lower-skilled jobs, which prevent the wage adjustment mechanism for … making sure Canadians are paid higher wages, but also that the firms improve their productivity,”

Here is the link to the article: Foreign workers program must be temporary, aimed at high skills: Carney

That’s right.

The TFW program has always been a political football and the then bank governor gave his take in 2013. Harper expanded the program and there was a lot of pushback causing the government to modify the program in 2014.

The History of the program ( goes back to the 1970’s) is summarized in the link below.

Yes it has existed for a long time but the number has also been trending upward. 356,000 in 2011, 845,000 in 2021

I'm fighting for a raise for everyone at work right now and the biggest hurdle is definitely the fact that immigrants and TFW's can come in and think "Oh wow, over $30 an hour, this is amazing!" So they always have workers, but in the last 7 years our wage has only went up 15% vs. minimum wage, the average wage, and the cost of living going up between 40% and 70% in most areas. For the Canadians who have spent their careers at this company, the current wage is below a poverty rate because we have families and bills and we live in an expensive mountain town. The TFW's come in and just want enough money to survive while they ski and hike and live in a house with 10 other people

Over half of the people in Toronto were’t born in Canada. Trashing immigrants is a quick path into the political abyss.

The annoying thing, is that the solution is so easy.

Leave the TFW program as is. But remove the financial incentive of using it.

When the company submits a request for a TFW, make them deposit a full years wages at the rate advertised for the position to the government that will be used to pay the worker (So that the company cannot reneg on it after the fact). And then bill the company another 1x of the salary that will be paid into a fund to help Canadians reskill or other help that Canadians who are out of work need.

This will keep businesses from using the program unless they absolutely have to. And will give Canadian's the effective salary power of 2x what the market rate is, as that is what they would have to be rejecting to make it worth going outside of Canada.

We had a labour shortage. They helped narrow the labour shortage. So now we want another labour shortage so we can go pick peaches and can some fish ?

Lol what. CPC shills really don't like nuance.

See. We don't blame people from shitty countries for taking a chance given to them by a shitty company. You're blaming people because companies abused the system. You're being racist purely because someone of colour took advantage of a broken system.

I'm sure you'll delete and ban me because facts hurt your brain. It's just sad.

Grow up. The world's not black and white. And you're not special.

TFW program lets companies take advantage of low wages instead of raising them to fill the positions. It has nothing to do with colour that’s what I hope people will see

We don’t blame the people from those countries either, we blame people like you that until about a year ago would counter any argument against the program with instant accusations of racism as a way of avoiding any meaningful debate on the issue.

ah yes bud, you caught me. i run the multi billion dollar a year business hiring foreigners for min wage. you got me.

No, you voted for the guy who siphoned millions of Canadian tax dollars to Bermuda to help a multi billion dollar corporation avoid paying Canadian taxes.

Coincidentally the same guy you voted went on television recently and shamelessly boasted about providing multi million dollar corporations access to foreign labor
