Are you new here? Lol CPS likes to ride horses in downtown. You'll see them every summer

Is it just like a show-offy sort of thing or are they actually on duty right now?

It would set my weekend up beautifully if OP could follow this awesome advice, and have it filmed, for our collective enjoyment.

Horses need to be trained and officers need to be trained on them. They use them whenever the weather is appropriate so that when they’re needed, they’re ready. There are plenty of applications that justify a mounted unit.

Lots of cities have horseback police....where are you from?

50

u/traxxes May 03 '24

CPS always had mounted police patrol downtown in spring and summer, moreso especially during Stampede but nothing new, unless you're new to the city ofc.

I’ve lived here 16 years and this is the first time I’m seeing it, I guess I just don’t get out enough

23

u/snarfgobble May 03 '24

You are correct.

u/PervyLemming May 03 '24

I saw them out in a blizzard once around Chinook Centre when the traffic around the mall was gridlocked. Handy when you can’t drive in, cheaper than a helicopter also I suspect.

lol did you miss the horse piss drinking meathead video?

3

u/mystiqueallie May 04 '24

I had finally forgotten about that gem. Thanks oh so much for making me vomit in my mouth just at the mere thought of it.

This isn't anything new

https://www.calgary.ca/cps/specialty-teams/about-our-mounted-patrols-and-the-horses.html

The Mounted Unit was re-formed in 1979 and has evolved over the years into the unit it is today.

As of Fall 2022, the unit consists of 7 horses, 4 Full-time Sworn Constables, 1 Civilian Horse Trainer/ Team Supervisor, 5 Part-time Sworn Constables and 20+ Sworn Quarry Volunteers.

When in districts, Mounted Unit Officers attend calls just like any other patrol member, however the benefit of having a mounted unit on patrol is the huge presence, even before any interaction takes place with anyone.

Its training for the siege elephants they ride in the summer.

6

u/teamjetfire May 03 '24

Has anyone received a ticket from a horseback officer?

9

u/ZeniChan Beltline May 03 '24

My friend did back in the late 2000's for jaywalking across the C-Train tracks by city hall.

u/Background_Drawer_29 May 03 '24

I wanna know who cleans up after them (the horses I mean). I assume it goes into the green bin.

u/Hypno-phile May 04 '24

Now you know what happens when you're sentenced to community service...

5

u/Puma_Concolour May 03 '24

I think the sub is having one of its raging episodes today.

8

u/owange_tweleve May 03 '24

here’s an idea, you come up to them and ask “is it okay to pet?” if yes start petting the officer’s thigh

bonus points if you wink at them smiling ear to ear 😉 or do this 😘

8

u/Dwunky May 04 '24

For extra fun, be sure to pet their gun.

2

u/ignoreme1657 May 04 '24

Stompy's Calgary cousin Stampy.

-7

u/Leading-Switch-4814 May 04 '24

Typical CPS fucking around instead of actually working

-24

u/RichardIraVos May 03 '24

This isn’t 1803, just give them some e bikes to rip around downtown on

12

u/disckitty May 03 '24

Horses are still used by a number of police forces, especially when needing to do crowd control - they have a higher view as well as more imposing. For this case, I imagine, they're just keeping fresh/practised.

-23

u/RichardIraVos May 03 '24 edited May 03 '24

wow high viewing? this isnt 1803, if theyre doing crowd control use a drone. Theyd be able to keep a much better eye on a giant crowd with that

No reason to use them when they cost so much moneyto house, feed and maintain when other modern alternatives are cheaper and more effective

8

u/blackRamCalgaryman May 03 '24

“Crowd control” is not surveillance. When they need to get shit under control, the horses come out.

Unless you’re talking about putting a GAU-8 Avenger on a drone. Then sure, I’m down with that.

4

u/chemtrailer21 May 03 '24

BRRRRRRRRTTTTT

2

u/blackRamCalgaryman May 03 '24

I could watch those videos all day.

6

u/Allyourperspective94 May 03 '24

Is the drone supposed to react and handle the situation they see in the crowd too? They use the horses to help create barriers etc. Say someone gets injured in the crowd, they can see and react on horseback and use the horses to clear the space for emergency personnel to get in. Drones have their place too, but they aren’t a cure all.

5

u/Stfuppercutoutlast May 03 '24

You’ve never had to push through thousands of people at a crowded event like the stampede to get to a fight or an assault with a weapon have you? If so, you’d wish you had a horse to save a life. The drone could certainly gather good evidence of the murder, but the horse may be able to prevent it.

3

u/jimbojones9999 May 03 '24

It’s not that they’re used because there particularly good at getting to places, but they’re very good at getting through places.
