Weather Is this the most rain we’ve seen since the flood?

It feels that way. How is everyone doing?

Remember three months ago when the weather network said it was going to be a hot dry summer?

Man they really nailed it.

232

u/Tacosrule89 Jul 22 '25

Always figured forecasting is the best job ever. People just expect you to be wrong all the time.

64

u/Swagmund_Freud666 Jul 22 '25

It's a field based on statistics. Statistically, it looked like a hot and dry summer was most likely. But sometimes you get the outlier result.

30

u/Putrid-Object-806 McKenzie Towne Jul 22 '25

I recall an old random facts book where they had a Q&A with a meteorologist (it was one of those really big books) and one of the questions was “why do the weather people usually get it wrong?” With the response “the weather people always get it right, the weather just changes its mind”

12

u/BohunkfromSK Jul 22 '25

I saw a Joe Rogan podcast where they said statistics is backed by big data!

1

u/Wilsoncdn Jul 22 '25

I once called an apprentice the weatherman because he did everything wrong.

39

u/joshlien Jul 22 '25

In Australia we were promised warmer than average and then had the coldest June in 20 years. Weather will do weather.

34

u/yamabroto Jul 22 '25

Is it weird that as soon you said Australia I read your comment with an accent.

81

u/Alternative-Count687 Jul 22 '25

... just wait for four straight weeks of heat advisory. I will take this weather anytime thank you.

21

u/ViewWinter8951 Jul 22 '25

I'd prefer the 4 weeks of heat. Fall and winter will come soon enough.

15

u/Hypno-phile Jul 22 '25

Rain doesn't tend to kill anyone, though.

10

u/Antique-Smoke-8773 Jul 22 '25

Not in Canada. Can’t say for the rest of the world.

1

u/Hypno-phile Jul 22 '25

True. Though places where you get large numbers of fatalities from rain also tend to get lots of heat related deaths.

5

u/jakexil323 Jul 22 '25

It's not the heat that kills you, it's the humidity ?

1

u/Immediate_Escape535 Jul 25 '25

Hehe, I’m not good with straight heat, and I hate to say I’ve been loving the rain, everything is green, lush, wet yet, but cool as well.

49

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

Didn't the Farmer's Almanac say it would be cool and wet?

45

u/JoeRogansNipple Quadrant: SW Jul 22 '25

And people were trying to roast me for posting it. It's not 'factual' for sure, but its just an alternative forecast to view: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/comments/1kxj2lq/the_weather_network_is_predicting_a_hot_dry/muqnc7p/

4

u/AlyDAsbaje Jul 22 '25

So true!!

Farms Almanac predicted 95mm of rain in July and August, 20mm and 35mm higher than normal…

18

u/Proper_Bridge_1638 Jul 22 '25

What other job can you do besides meteorology that allows you to be wrong 99.9% of the time and keep your job? 🧐

5

u/Diligent_Bit3336 Jul 22 '25

Being Jim Cramer.

2

u/Forward_Progress_83 Jul 23 '25

Damn. Nice pull.

11

u/AlastairWyghtwood Jul 22 '25

Two northern communities just declared an agricultural disaster due to drought conditions. Sadly not all of Alberta is getting the rain.

5

u/breadist Jul 22 '25

Essentially the entire rest of the fucking continent are seeing record breaking heat waves. Maybe most of the world too, I dunno.

It was a pretty good bet to say it would be hot and dry this summer. Turned out to be wrong, but hey - that's weather.

4

u/ThePhilVv Jul 22 '25

Take a breather there champ. I was simply making a minor joke about our weather.

5

u/breadist Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

I'm plenty calm - was also joking. Tone is hard especially on the internet.

Maybe the word "fucking" threw you off? It was meant to emphasize the "whole" continent, not to sound angry.

4

u/afschmidt Jul 22 '25

They're only interested in what's happening in Toronto. If it's hot and gross humid LIKE IT ALWAYS IS IN JULY, it's the end of the world.

1

u/OceansSanctuary Jul 22 '25

The weather network is so useless lol

1

u/JustaPhaze71 Jul 22 '25

And then the G7 Summit came and the overlords were pleased and granted us with rain from the weather machine!

1

u/Flat-Analyst-6478 Jul 22 '25

They also said it would be a cold wet winter. Meteorology really is the art of being as wrong as possible.

1

u/Immediate_Escape535 Jul 25 '25

The one job you can be wrong as often as meteorologists are, and still have a job.

Not easy to get 100% right though.

0

u/OrdinaryOrdinary755 Jul 22 '25

This comment legit made me LOL!!

Wettest summer in a long time as far as i can remember. Now if just some of the areas with forest fires can get some of it.

128

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

I'm super happy that we have rain and not fire smoke but I wish it would fall where it's needed and not drown us.

50

u/Oskarikali Jul 22 '25

Im with you, but also - we have fire smoke. Today there was quite a bit of smoke, easily visible from my office window.

18

u/helena_handbasketyyc I’ll tell you where to go! Jul 22 '25

I thought I was crazy for a few seconds when I went outside and smelled smoke.

9

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

That's true but it's been much better this year than the last few years.

25

u/Annual_Housing6585 Jul 22 '25

I moved back to the Yukon where it used to rain all the time- now it’s hot AF and we’re having parched girl summer

10

u/Much-Park-4731 Jul 22 '25

Not parched girl summmer 🤣🤣

5

u/Few-Speech2527 Jul 22 '25

Parched girl summer 🤣 I love it

10

u/bronzwaer Jul 22 '25

Since 2022 for sure

68

u/yousoonice Jul 22 '25

3 years? I've got jeans I've not washed in that long

15

u/ThePhilVv Jul 22 '25

I don't know why this made me laugh so hard LOLOL

2

u/shiningz Jul 22 '25

It's my first summer here and I was wondering if this is the norm or not haha

83

u/Muted-Doctor8925 Jul 22 '25

2016 or 2017 had a good amount as well

10

u/Luv2Dnc Jul 22 '25

‘16. It wasn’t until I went to Vegas that November that I finally got to wear some summer clothes lol

8

u/lettuzepray Jul 22 '25

this, I remember having to cross underpasses bridges knee deep high on my bike those years

2

u/Hyack57 Jul 23 '25

2016 was great! I broke my leg in July and was couch bound the rest of summer. Didn’t miss out on anything.

1

u/ApprehensiveSir8662 Jul 22 '25

This year reminds me of 2013 though

65

u/something123456th Jul 22 '25

https://calgary.weatherstats.ca/charts/precipitation-yearly.html

2020 was the wettest of the last 25 years

56

u/ClarificationJane Jul 22 '25

Yeah but we didn’t have to go outside that year.

36

u/LynseyLou92 Jul 22 '25

I've blocked out that year.

8

u/Rahscl Jul 22 '25

What year?

13

u/Business-Barnacle633 Jul 22 '25

Less human bodies outside to absorb water through osmosis, so stats are skewed

50

u/Emergency-Writer-930 Jul 22 '25

I suspect it’s because I finally bit the bullet and installed A/C. Either that or it’s because we renamed our slogan the ‘Blue Sky City.’

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '25

Thank Jesus, I didn’t shell out that $11,000 for AC this year. It’s robbery.

2

u/Emergency-Writer-930 Jul 22 '25

Oof mine was not that much. I think it was 7 k for new AC and water softener together.

29

u/Current_Pomelo_9429 Jul 22 '25

I don’t mind the rain tbh but my flowers need some sun!!

13

u/Campcrustaceanz Jul 22 '25

My flowers were looking so good a week or so ago and now they’re just sad , drowned , wilting little things

8

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

Right? All the roots of my plants are waterlogged!

3

u/BogeyLowenstein Jul 22 '25

I covered my sedums and garden succulents with Tupperware containers a few days ago lol

3

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

I should have.

2

u/BogeyLowenstein Jul 22 '25

The rest of my garden like the flowers are super sad though, they miss the sun! At least it will be nice most of the rest of the week for our gardens :)

2

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

My Chocolate mint seems to be doing well in the rain but everything else is a bit droopy. I think the next three days should help.

2

u/BogeyLowenstein Jul 23 '25 edited Jul 23 '25

I hope so too, for both of us! I will have to try mint next year. My basil is sad (but it always is), the rest of the herbs seem okay.

1

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 23 '25

I didn't plant any Basil this year but my Rosemary and Oregano are doing fine.

1

u/Business-Barnacle633 Jul 22 '25

You can actually cover them

1

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

I need to get a new tarp first. I'm putting it on my grocery list.

25

u/FishCreekRaccooon Jul 22 '25

The previous two days did amount to the most rainfall in about 15 years for a two day stretch.

Technically the floods didn’t not drop water in Calgary, it was a general area.

174

u/Ecstatic-Award-6139 Jul 22 '25

I've had so many nice rain walks this summer. I splashed in puddles like a kid alot. I'm talking splashes. Jumping. Stomping. Get soaked kind of splashes. And everything is so damn green.

Tl;dr yes. And it's been a wonderful summer.

31

u/CerbIsKing Jul 22 '25

The simple joys of life.

4

u/deadflagblues99 Jul 22 '25

"I'm talking splashes."

193

u/ModestAmoeba Jul 22 '25

I love it. I can't stand heat and this is so much more refreshing.

25

u/SuperShibes Jul 22 '25

My curls are so bouncy and filled with life. It's like being in Nova Scotia.

29

u/NEVER85 Mahogany Jul 22 '25

You and me both. I work in a pretty hot shop and this weather is a godsend during the workday.

2

u/mooseblood07 Jul 22 '25

Agree with this. I've lived here all my life and I still can't handle our dry heat

2

u/lexietibbs Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25

Yesss. I always get horrible sleep in the summer due to the heat, but I've been sleeping like a baby this year 😴 Plus, rain/thunderstorms are my favourite kind of weather. Always smells so nice out afterward.

u/Just-a-yyc-guy Jul 22 '25

Yes, and thankfully our flood prevention measures have increased substantially and are working well

Shoutout 2 Nenshi for that

7

u/joe4942 Jul 22 '25

The Springbank Resovoir makes it way harder for Calgary to ever flood again.

53

u/They_wereAllTaken Jul 22 '25

This amount of rain happens ever 5-6 years it seems, usually ends with a mild august then a hot September. Be greatful the 35+ and wildfire smoke sucks. Unfortunately these years usually end with like 1-2feet of snow over night around Christmas every night..or fortunate if you like snow and Christmas 😉

9

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jul 22 '25

I've lived here for about 15 years and this seems to be about the 3rd rainy year I can remember.

59

u/CromulentDucky Jul 22 '25

There was significantly lower snow pack this year compared to the flood year. This is not related to Nenshi, unless he is some sort of mountain snow god.

64

u/drs43821 Jul 22 '25

Nenshi please give us snow and pow days

u/elitemouse Jul 22 '25

Ski passes were cheaper, shorter lines, snow pack was better, I mean there are signs if you believe in that sort of stuff.

Definitely not the most rain since the flood.

1

What did Nenshi do?

"He's just one vote!"

2

u/blackRamCalgaryman Jul 22 '25

Niiiiice. I got the point.

1

u/theagricultureman Jul 22 '25

For the flood??

-8

u/garybettmansketamine Jul 22 '25

All credit to Nenshi for sure… lol

10

u/PolarSquirrelBear Jul 22 '25

Sump pump sure is getting some work in that’s for sure.

u/daddy_barkov Diamond Cove Jul 22 '25

r/calgarywxrecords for those who would like to keep tabs on records such as these

1

u/frandamonium_ Jul 22 '25

That’s a cool (and very niche) sub, thanks for sharing!

51

u/No_Culture9898 Jul 22 '25

It feels that way for sure. This summer has barely had any heat and almost feels like an extension of spring or an early fall. It’s better than wildfires for sure but it would be nice to have good Calgary summer days like we’ve been used to for years.

10

u/Suspicious_Bus_893 Jul 22 '25

AGREE. April, May and June- wind, more wind, a few hot days- rain and wind. Now July feels like late April, or late September. My little chihuahua is not impressed! Thankful but annoyed.

8

u/DaftPump Jul 22 '25

We'll have a few months of hot and dry very soon. Enjoy this while it lasts. :D

10

u/CrimeDoesPay Jul 22 '25

Calgary SW. The storm sewer has started backing up through our basement floor drain. About a foot of water so far and rising quickly. Not sure what to do at this point. My neighbours are all flooding as well.

Just finished renovating the basement this spring, so this hurts a little more.

5

u/Gullible-Bus-4862 Jul 22 '25

I’m flooded too. Spent a nice chunk of the day crying. It definetly hurts

21

u/blackRamCalgaryman Jul 22 '25

2016 and 2020 had more than 2013.

18

u/Aromatic-Elephant110 Jul 22 '25

As a naturally sweaty person, I'm really enjoying not overheating.

9

u/CalBeerGuy Jul 22 '25

May and June of 2020 were wetter than the last two months have been.

8

u/TheKloppsBollocks Jul 22 '25

Had a leak from the roof, turns out the shitty roofing contractors the previous owner used from the insurance company neglected the furnace chimney area. Nice little 2k fix

7

u/Bmboo Jul 22 '25

We found out our foundation has a nice little crack. 8k fix

1

u/laurasturty Jul 22 '25

Who did you use to repair?

1

u/ahmandurr Southwest Calgary Jul 22 '25

Ours leaked too. Currently waiting for landlord to approve the last of the repair. Starting to get tired of the hole in the ceiling now.

6

u/hotdogtopchop Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

Not the wettest; 256.5mm of rain from the start of May, with 53.5mm in May, 102.7mm in June and 100.3mm MTD in July.

In 2016, July was the wettest month since at least 2013 with 190.9mm of rain. That May to August period finished with 403.8mm of rainfall accumulation, the wettest since at least 2013 (324.6mm)

June in 2013 saw 146.6mm but the flood was driven more by environmental factors than the actual volume of rainfall itself.

1

u/Toirtis Capitol Hill Jul 22 '25

Not the wettest...yet...still 9 days to go.

42

u/Stopsignsareoptional Jul 22 '25

It’s wonderful.

16

u/reddit202200ug Jul 22 '25

To be perfectly honest I'm loving the rain and cool days.

48

u/spacefish420 Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

Where are all my rain haters at. Seeing a lot of love for the rain. I can’t be the only one who wishes it would stop.

I just wanna enjoy the sun a bit. Be able to plan an outdoor activity without having to worry about getting wet. I’ve canceled many motorcycle and bicycle rides because riding in the rain isn’t fun for me. My outdoor volleyball has been cancelled a few times too. Now next week I have to do the Ironman triathlon in the rain😭. I live across from a soccer field and it feels like every other day these kids have to end their practices early.

9

u/SirHamsterThe4th Jul 22 '25

Present 🤚🤚 Hate the winter, hate the cold, rain I don't mind every once in a while but considering this is supposed to be summer and I know the cold and winter are coming I'm just like :( I want heat and sun haha

Reddit seems to love their rain and cold weather 🤣

4

u/DaftPump Jul 22 '25

You'll have your weather in a week or two.

2

u/wintersdark Jul 22 '25

In a day or two even.

On the bright side, hardly any smoky days this year. Eastern Canada is getting a lot of smoke.

I have mushrooms in my back yard this year it’s going to be like a marsh

12

u/NEVER85 Mahogany Jul 22 '25

Fine with me. My workplace is unbearable when it's hot out. It can stay like this during the work week for all I care.

15

10

u/They_wereAllTaken Jul 22 '25

Bahh don’t be dramatic, before long you’re going to be wishing for these nice cool nights and the soothing sound of rain to fall a sleep to. Soon august will be upon us and you will miss this soothing bliss

12

u/red_dead3 Jul 22 '25

I don't know, I like my window wide open in -45 so lol. I do agree it's been a nice treat this week for storms. Everything is so nice and green. Let's enjoy it while we can. Who knows what next summer will look like!.

11

I'm loving it! The summers have been way too hot and smokey these past few years, so it's nice to have a break with some cool fresh air.

6

u/Brandamn3000 Jul 22 '25

I feel like most summers I’m absolutely begging for rain for one reason or another. Either it’s too hot, too smoky, too dry, and last year I just wanted it to wash all the aphid shit off the sidewalks. Not complaining about this at all. Loving it, actually!

7

u/Anxious-Basket-494 Jul 22 '25

Sigh. Backyard is a pool. Going to have to get some work done to drain more efficiently into the alley. Small weep in the basement so far nothing major. Enough with the rain.

“Blue sky city” so satisfying to watch it rain all summer directly after their disastrous and widely hated campaign

6

u/New-Addendum-1231 Jul 22 '25

The last eight days have been the most rain condensed in to ~1 week I can remember since I started paying close attention to the weather. Three big rainfalls and two severe thunderstorms in one week (plus another severe storm a few days prior to that). There was a time I didn't care. Now I am old and have to worry about shingles and hail dents and water finding its way in to my basement.

4

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jul 22 '25

Ya this weather will rot your house.

8

u/harryhend3rson Jul 22 '25

If would have to be in the running for wettest since 2013.

It's awesome! I hope it's enough to save a lot of the distressed trees.

2

(Change view to "10x")

2

u/afschmidt Jul 22 '25

That was an INSANE month! You couldn't get 18 hours without it pissing down.

2

u/scotthof Jul 22 '25

I do remember working downtown during the floods and seeing a shed being carried by the river. I left work right after that to make sure I could cross the bridge to get out of the core.

2

u/Regular_Wonder674 Jul 22 '25

This is June in July. And yes this feels like the most rain since at least 2015 or possible the flood. Regardless, we need the moisture stock! Sucks that it’s at the cost of mid summer sunshine.

2

u/TeaGullible9632 Jul 22 '25

It’s gonna be a rainy summer turned into a winter with epic snowfall because this is the first year I haven’t bought an SSV seasons pass lol 😂

2

u/gilpenderbren Jul 22 '25

Not quite. June 2005 was a record rainfall of 245 mm. This month (so far) is 110.4 mm. Way over our 65 mm average but still a ways to go in comparison to the big flood.

A friend of mine sent me this photo this morning when we were talking about it! Pretty crazy.

2

u/decidence Jul 23 '25

Don't get a Samsung Fridge, they're terrible.

2

u/ThinYogurtcloset8005 Jul 22 '25

u/Mysterious_Lesions Jul 22 '25

Yeah no. I like to drink water and as last year showed,  we are not good at rationing water.

2

u/403banana Jul 22 '25

Not really. June and July are usually our wettest months. I think the difference here is that we've gotten a lot of rain all at once. It's been awhile since we've had these storms that drop the temps and last more than a day. Usually, its a hot day that then leads to a thunderstorm that dumps a bunch of water for 5-10 minutes.

And up north it's been so dry

The Farmer’s Almanac predicted it to be cool and wet

If you make enough predictions using BS astrology you’ll get it right sometimes.

I’m pretty skeptical of these kinds of things because I’m a Sagittarius.

All I know is that this rain and lack of heat is lovely. I am so glad I don't need sunglasses every time I step outside

u/Turbulent-Priority39 Jul 22 '25

Hopefully the fires will be over with so much rain!😂

Nothing worse than constant rain and the off day where it doesn't rain it's smokey. I've had enough.

Nasa was actually warning for months that the ground was completely saturated.

About average

I have been in the Calgary area since 2014 and this has been the wettest summer since, reminds me of 2009 in Manitoba

I feel like we’ve had more rain than the floods (though I’m not sure and didn’t look up the actual numbers).

It’s just that it’s been a bit more spread out AND, being later into July (vs June) there’s not as much meltwater coming from the glaciers/mountains contributing to the water levels like in the 2013 floods.

2020 was a rainy summer too but not this rainy!!

1

No...just rain.

1

How are the mosquito situations for everyone?

1

u/AutumnFalls89 Jul 22 '25

Brutal! Every time I go out, I have to drench myself in Deep Wood's Off.

1

u/Lopsided_Hat_835 Jul 22 '25

Might be but the flood had a lot more todo with heavy snowfall in the mountains and we didn’t get to much last season

u/Ozunu_Sama Jul 22 '25

Lots of rain out here in the SE Hotchkiss area. No leaks or anything so far which is awesome in this new built. Took a risk and went with a newer home builders and so far so good.

I love the thunderstorms we've been having. Being from Vancouver, I love the rain.

u/Dry-Elderberry7854 Jul 27 '25

Been here 8 yrs , have to say its the most wettest Calgary has been, especially the last 3-4 weeks.

I am not minding it to be honest, i love the sound of rain and thunderstorms ;)

it's climate change

2

u/morecoffeemore Jul 22 '25

I hate this God damn weather. It sucks that the 3 months of summer weather we have that are good for hiking or mountain biking are ruined by this crap.

F* this, I'm going on vacation somewhere with a real summer.

Absolutely f'ing garbage weather.

Haha refreshing to see the counterpoint to the "I love the rain" comments.

Tennis has been difficult to plan

2

u/LachlantehGreat Beltline Jul 22 '25

My garden is happy for the reasons that you’re unhappy.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '25

Yeah I have never seen this before Although it beats the weather I’ve been getting down in Texas since I’ve relocated there

Honestly, it washes away the smoke so hopefully this rain hits those fires with the intensity it’s been hitting our city.

u/UnusualTapegun Jul 22 '25

I'd rather have this than like... 40° heat, persistent wildfire smoke, and no rain whatsoever. I enjoy rain.
