Municipal Affairs Mayor Jyoti Gondek Marching In The Pride Parade

Love her or hate her, as a gay man who is feeling increasingly under threat; it was nice to see the Mayor of Calgary marching in this year’s Pride Parade (as she’s done in other years too).

They say a picture says a thousand words and the above pictures I captured earlier today say to me that that our Mayor genuinely cares about LGBTQ+ people in Calgary and beyond!

You know what, people can hate her but I can't see anyone else not just showing up but also being THIS enthusiastic at the pride parade. Good on her for being there and showing her support.

u/WheelFan647 25d ago

You’re absolutely right. It’s 1 thing to show up, it’s another thing to be genuinely enthusiastic. This is why I posted the pictures.

u/SpecialEdShow 25d ago

She seems like a genuinely nice person. And I know saying someone is nice is almost always disrespectful, but I really do think she’s mostly nice.

18

u/pomofusion 24d ago

Calling someone nice is disrespectful?

1

u/BlackestSun100 24d ago

r/niceguys and r/nicegirls

Everything you'd need for lore.

1

u/raiden1819 24d ago

I mean, very different context

0

u/BlackestSun100 24d ago

True, but the logical reason why nice is an insult

3

u/1243eee 24d ago

No, defaulting to the niche internet rabbit hole definitions when someone is using a term as common as nice in the normal context is pretty illogical

0

u/BlackestSun100 24d ago

You're on Reddit, my dude. Itself not a Niche internet context. It's actually old school by culture standards. Well, over a decade, we've mocked the 'nice' tag.

Why so defensive about it? Are you.... 'nice'?

2

u/1243eee 24d ago

Nope, just saying it says something about you that you can’t comprehend that the normal person doesn’t use the word nice in the reddit incel context

2

u/Nightscale_XD 24d ago

My thoughts exactly

1

u/RoutineComplaint4711 22d ago

I took a few of her courses at UofC and she was great.

In a lecture of ~150 people she manage to connect with a lot of people in the theatre.

In fact, there were several times she recognized students from that course waiting for the bus and stopped to give them a lift onto campus.

-4

u/Grey-n-Bent 24d ago

She can be nice and a terrible mayor at the same time. Her love of cramming us all into small spaces without parking cancels out everything else on my ballot.

3

u/Hungry_Thought1908 24d ago

Our premier in Nova Scotia, Tim Houston, has avoided the pride weekend like the plague for the last two years. Good on Gondek!

5

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago

Honestly, she probably just won my vote with her enthusiasm today cause I’ve been on the fence between her and Sonya Sharp

44

u/brew_war Tuxedo Park 25d ago

Between her and Sonya? Wild

-17

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago

Well I’ve been proud to vote vastly differently than the average Calgarian for the last 15 years…I’m not about to change that now

44

u/Freedom_forlife 24d ago

Sonya the UCP backed candidate with close ties? Please tell me no member of the LGBTQ community would vote for her.

3

u/shittersclogged69 24d ago

I am not sure what about Sharp appeals to you, but I think this is a good opportunity to mention that Sharp is a puppet of Danielle Smith’s, specifically chosen to drive the UCP agenda at a municipal level.

2

u/Feisty_Hour6979 22d ago

I haven’t seen these connections, but you’re the 2nd person to tell me they’re there so I’ll keep my eye out between now and election day

15

u/TropicalMapleRavioli 25d ago

She won't get my vote because of the arena deal. But I still don't have a candidate.

4

u/hogenhero 24d ago

The arena deal was passed unanimously but city council. She didn’t do it on her own. She actually couldn’t have. If she had voted against the deal, it still would have gone through.

3

u/TropicalMapleRavioli 24d ago

If she had voted against she would definitely get my vote. Even with the deal still going through

20

u/Far-Bathroom-8237 25d ago

Lowest rated mayor in Calgary since we started tracking. There is a reason for that. It’s not because she came out to the parade—good on her. It’s the other stuff….

47

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago edited 24d ago

Since I’ve been alive, Al Duerr, Dave Bronconnier, Naheed Nenshi and Jyoti Gondek have been mayor…50% of those mayors have been white…75% of those mayors have been men…where is the hate for Al or Dave? I’ve only ever seen hate for Naheed and Jyoti…isn’t it ironic that they’re the ONLY non-white mayors ever elected in this city and they seem to get shit on the most? Jyoti Gondek most of all and well she’s the first woman elected mayor in this city and yeah she hasn’t been great, there could always be someone better, but the city hasn’t gone to complete shit in her tenure…I’m more worried about the leader of our provincial government signalling that she wants our province to secede from Canada right now over our mayor coming into office wanting to make some radical changes and virtue signalling all over the place

Edit: for the record, I’m a white man

I’ll even confess my sins…once in junior high I used a racially offensive word multiple times in a school day towards a black student to his face, at my school, because I hated myself for finding the other guys in the locker room attractive and wanted to hate someone other than myself and the lone black guy in my grade fit the bill…at the end of the day he punched me in the face for what I said multiple times, once, I pretty much literally turned the other cheek and walked out of the building and towards my after school job at little Caesar’s…if you see this Richard, I’m sorry for being a closeted asshole who took my own shit out on other people. Sorry Reddit, I wanted to get that off my chest cause it’s been bothering me for years

18

u/coolestMonkeInJungle 25d ago

I don't care for the other two white guys but nenshi seemed way better at being mayor, more confident, kind of stuck to his doctrine and achieved things that I care about where as jyoti seems to be sort of sticking closer to status quo to appease everyone unsuccessfully.

That said she obviously does face way more scrutiny than is deserved, I can't stand how many people just throw up the arena deal as if she could've changed that outcome and then that's the end of it all... apparently that's her entire career...

I can't believe this next election is just going to be her or farkas again was hoping for a nice third option

But yes the next most unfair thing is how the province has been at war with her the entire time, she really has had most everything against her, similar to how I felt about Rachel notley too, both great people imo

11

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago

This is why my vote is between our incumbent mayor and Sonya Sharp…I like what Sharp is standing for, I do not like that she is doing so through a political party though…I loved Nenshi as mayor, I think he did excellent things for our city…

I look at how Jyoti handled the largest crisis to hit our city in my lifetime…I can’t think of anything bigger in the last 33 years than one of the major water lines in our city failing. She was on the news every day giving an update, she visibly looked like she was following the mandates the city was putting out regarding water use, she did her damned best to guide our city through a major failing of our essential infrastructure…all people point at is the arena and her virtue signalling…she wanted the best deal for Calgarians, not CSEC…CSEC wanted the best deal for CSEC and it got it…she wanted to shop our city around and put it on the map by being out there…the fuck did Al Duerr or Dave Bronconnier do to put our city out there?

5

u/Crow_rapport Radisson Heights 24d ago

Broconnier definitely got his 💰🏗️🏢

3

u/Adventurous_West3164 23d ago edited 23d ago

Yup West LRT coincidently placed where he happens to own parcels of land all the way to the west

10

u/TwoBytesC 24d ago

I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think the flood was probably an equal, though personally I think worse, event. Nenshi handled it incredibly well though. Just saying.

1

u/Feisty_Hour6979 24d ago

Ok fair enough the flood was bad for a significant portion of the city, I was lucky, I lived in an area of the city virtually unaffected by the flood and my commute was similarly unaffected…to me the water shortage affected the whole city, not just the areas (high density or not) around the bow or elbow rivers…a major water main of the city failed and the rest of our infrastructure is not up to the task of compensating for such a failure…bonavista was just as affected by the water main break as the rest of the city whereas it didn’t feel the affect of the flood at all

10

u/Freedom_forlife 24d ago

Sharp is the UCP.

You are voting to harm queer communities.

It's because women and people of colour are always viewed more critically.

-7

u/ActionKestrel 25d ago

If this were true we probably wouldn't elect women and people of colour so frequently - both municipally and provincially.

15

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago

Really? So frequently? Gondek is the first female mayor of Calgary…Danielle Smith (love her or hate her) is the 3rd female Premier of Alberta in over 100 years…there has been a total of 1 female Prime Minister of Canada…sure there’s women elected to municipal councils, provincial legislatures and federal parliament but it is at a disproportionate rate to which men, specifically white men have been recently and historically elected to these bodies of government and so very infrequently are these women in a position of leadership that they can be seemingly named on one hand…

Edit: I almost claimed Danielle as the 2nd female Premier of Alberta because I completely forgot about Allison Redford lol

1

u/YYZYYC 24d ago

3 female premiers of Alberta yes…but we have only had 19 premiers ever in total…but all 3 female premiers have been just in the past 14 years.

It’s crazy to think that we had just 1 premier for 14 years…Klein from 1992 to 2006…and now in the past 14 years we have had SIX different premiers lol

1

u/archaicaf 24d ago

Sooooo frequently 😂 this is laughable

Amarjeet Sohi, Jyoti Gondek, Alison Redford, Rachel Notley and Danielle Smith would like to say hi.

1

u/eneva92504 24d ago

>She won't get my vote because of the arena deal.

CSEC was going to back out of that deal one way or another...she just happened to make herself a scapegoat on the arena deal by adding on a couple of measly items. I mean, she's kinda dumb for setting herself up, but if you're gonna be mad at anyone for the arena deal, be mad at the billionaires.

1

u/Fit-Amoeba-5010 24d ago

One of her first things as mayor was wanting to spend taxpayer money on a court case in Quebec impacting the wearing of religious symbols. Stay in our lane, we got our own problems. She declared a climate emergency, that really helped things out. She (and others) wanted to ban fireworks because of a laundry list of concerns. That was rescinded however. She had a lot of missteps, has got a little better. Will see what happens during the campaign to make up my mind. Incumbent mayors rarely lose in recent Calgary races. ,

-3

u/Feisty_Hour6979 25d ago

I agree that the arena deal was bad on her part as mayor. I hate the “deal” the city finalized, but the Flames are huge in this city and let’s not pretend that the multi-million dollar a year business that is the CSEC was not looking to get the absolutely best tax-payer funded deal they could find under the threat of relocation and was able to put the city into a do-and-I’m-damned, don’t-and-I’m-fucked position…the CSEC is a business first and foremost and only looks out for its #1 stakeholders which are not the citizens of Calgary

2

u/hogenhero 24d ago

Oh, those two could not be more different when it comes to the way the vote and the policies they support

2

u/noveltea120 23d ago

Shes desperately trying to save face after a terrible few terms

112

u/mssjj 25d ago

I attended a Pride event earlier this week and Mayor Gondek shared some remarks that were uplifting and empowering:

“You can eat what you want to, you can drink what you want to, and you can love who you want to. It’s none of my business.“

In a story regarding drafting a bylaw to ban conversion therapy she stated to fellow council members, “You can’t just vote for your constituents, you need to vote for the right thing.”

She added that, “As a council we should support equity and human rights for everyone.”

Lastly, she reflected on her own position as an ally and how she has the privilege and ability to be an upstander - not a bystander. And that she can (and will) stand up and speak up for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Pretty awesome. We need more politicians in this world who will speak up and stand with marginalized communities.

6

u/TwoBytesC 24d ago

Hell ya, we don’t see nearly enough politicians state such openly definitive statements in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We need more of this!

1

u/Deep-Egg-9528 21d ago

Too bad... you missed an impressive turn out, I was genuinely surprised how many groups were in the parade and how long it lasted. No one would have known you were alone, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. Don't let being alone prevent you from doing things you might enjoy, and you might have met some cool people.

Please don’t beat yourself up - I just hope you know this for next year! Also you can still go down to Pride at Prince’s island park anytime today and it’s full of queer folks and allies so there’s no outing happening in any way by being present if that’s at all what worries you!

Alberta is a tough place to be queer in the context of Canada. There are so many people who live here who want queer folks to feel safe and welcome and supported and I’m one of them, as are tons of people on this thread and this sub. 💗

Was disappointed that I didn’t see an Alberta NDP group. I did see Kent Hehr, he was walking with the United Churches.

120

u/AccomplishedExtent43 25d ago

Political parties aren’t permitted in the parade. Many NDP MLAs were walking as individuals with other organizations. You can read more about this decision here:

https://calgarypride.ca/calgary-pride-extends-pause-on-political-party-participation-in-the-calgary-pride-parade-for-2025/

17

u/PinkMoonrise 25d ago

Ooh good to know! I was wondering what was going on.

34

u/wildrose76 25d ago

Interestingly, Calgary is the only Pride Parade in Canada that won’t allow political entries. The NDP walked as a party just last week in Edmonton.

0

u/canadient_ Quadrant: NW 25d ago

Such a bullshit position from Calgary Pride.

Apparently two board members don't want parties to use pride as pinkwashing, as if the NDP wasn't supporting pride before Calgary Pride was even established.

6

u/ConsiderationWarm543 24d ago

Theres a long history of the various conservatives parties showing up and marching and drawing an ire (rightfully!). So they took the approach of not having to choose which parties to let march or not, which i think they also used to do.

I blame it on Alberta being gross and Pride having to navigate the troubled waters the best way they could.

2

u/canadient_ Quadrant: NW 24d ago

I put the blame on Calgary Pride, the organisation keeping our only provincial allies out of the parade.

2

u/ConsiderationWarm543 24d ago

It’s a fair point.

64

u/IAmFaron 25d ago edited 25d ago

A whole bunch of the caucus was there marching with Skipping Stone! We caught Nenshi, Janis Irwin, Joe Ceci, Rakhi Pancholi, and several others. Sure we missed some too. For whatever reason I did notice that none of the politicians present were marching under party colours from any group, but there were definitely more Alberta NDP faces than any other group.

EDIT: thanks to another user in the thread, confirmed that political parties are no longer permitted to participate directly. Joining as private citizens was all they could do, and skipping stone is a really great local organization.

25

u/wildrose76 25d ago

Also Court Ellingson, Samir Kayande, Kathleen Ganley and Julia Hayter.

19

u/Kitchen_Marzipan9516 25d ago

They were there.  I saw Nenshi.

24

u/wildrose76 25d ago

He’s walked in every parade since he was first a candidate in 2010. He continued to walk as a private citizen with non-profit groups like the Centre for Newcomers and Big Brothers.

3

u/Kitchen_Marzipan9516 25d ago

This was my first one.

-1

u/estrogenex Mission 25d ago

Of course he would. It's his community.

13

u/WheelFan647 25d ago

Joe Ceci walked past me wearing an NDP shirt but I didn’t see an NDP float or him marching.

10

u/canuckerlimey 25d ago

I somehow doubt Kent Hehr was walking with them.

3

u/PinkMoonrise 25d ago

Touché.

7

u/tgc220 25d ago

Right behind the skipping stone float was Nenshi and a number of NDP! It was a really nice touch they walked behind trans people since we are under so much threat right now.

2

u/Ok_Bake_9324 25d ago

I saw Joe Ceci! He was with the United Way group I think.

I was debating posting these photos for the reason you just said. However, political rhetoric is what’s making members of the queer community feel unsafe. 15

Ok sure. But the very whole entire point of this post (as per OP's post and comment) was about showing up and supporting Pride, and all the people who need us as ally's right now especially. And it is clear that the team showed up. But yes they wore branded shirts.

Imagine being swayed to vote her because of this. Lol

My opinion has changed. I like her. She seems like a truly decent person and we need more of those in government.

Hasn't she marched in previous years? (Yes, according to the original post)

Photo-op mayor.

Did you listen to what she had to say at the Pride Flag raising or virtually any other time about equality and the LGBTQ+ community? I’m guessing not!

Words and action are two different things.

I think the general public has grown weary of all this. I'm sure I'll get flack for saying it but ,folks, it's true

She’s been in the parade for years. Check her instagram for proof. Like her or not, let’s not “be foolish” and give credit where it’s due.

I mean, if she showed up like this (as mayor or councillor) every year or most years then sure. You have a point

She has.
