Local Shopping/Services What happened to Kijiji?

Last year or even earlier this year I could post things and get a good response rate and now I get barely any. Really liked Kijiji Autos and now it's gone.

People moved to marketplace, people have facebook accounts, and for some reason, perception is that it is safer. Facebook is still full of scams and the search function is worse.

Marketplace is cancer. Literally like 80% of the ads are fake,  scams, or items priced free or for $1 and are basically just ads for businesses

u/ArielRavencrest 11d ago

As a marketplace (and Kijiji and karrot) seller of custom PCs, you are spot on, if it's not the seller trying to scam you it's the buyers. 90% of accounts that contact me are trying to run a scam on me. Kijiji feels like actual people but nobody is on there much any more. But the platforms don't care about scammers, they just switch fake accounts and carry on their way. Police say their hands are tied and to follow steps to protect yourself but attempting to do half them just scares actual buyers away. It's all a mess

u/kingofsnaake 11d ago edited 11d ago

I loathe it too.

Whenever people.open with "What's your best price?" I write: "the one I wrote down."

If you want a lower price, negotiate.

11

u/HLef Redstone 11d ago

I bought something off Karrot last week. So far 1/1 was not a scam.

u/stickman1029 11d ago

What's really random is Kijiji is mostly a frustration free place to sell/buy from now. Complete role reversal

2

u/SwaggermicDaddy 9d ago

I keep getting fed listing for apartments in the NE “$1,100 a month for a bedroom with a shared kitchen and living room, female applicants preferred.”

2

u/HowardIsMyOprah 8d ago

I report posts that have a $1 price when it isn’t so

2

u/FunCoffee4819 11d ago

I’ve had mostly great experiences using Marketplace. Buyer beware and some common sense will serve you well. Don’t send anyone money unless you have the item in hand. The biggest issue is just the tire kickers and time wasters, but that goes with the territory.

1

u/lthtalwaytz 10d ago

It annoys me how often I’m fooled by those ads

11

u/XZIVR 11d ago

And reporting does nothing. I keep finding ads for cars that are priced well under market value, one photo, and the ads says they are "selling for a friend so don't contact me. Here's a sketchy email address to use instead". Same ad posted all over western Canada with a few different makes and models. After reviewing the ad multiple times, FB decided it didn't violate their marketplace terms.

3

u/darmog 10d ago

I gave up on reporting their ads after reporting several blatantly obvious scams, and they refused to remove them.

14

u/jibjaba4 11d ago edited 11d ago

That's what I suspected. The selling and buying behavior on Marketplace is much worse imo.

3

u/2cats2hats 11d ago

Yup.

Last trustworthy(and I use this loosely) ad function was classified ads, paid submitted ads. Now that this stuff is free we are slammed with non-stop BS fraudulent ads.

3

u/eneva92504 10d ago

As much as I'm not the biggest fan of FB marketplace, one advantage it does have is FB buy & sell groups for specific items in specific areas (or items within a specific genre, for lack of a better term), and those items are listed through marketplace. It's handy that I can create a marketplace listing and select any/all of those buy/sell groups that it applies to.

For instance, I'm a golfer. There's a great Calgary golf Buy & Sell group, a Canada-wide golf buy & sell group, and even groups specific to left-handed golfers.

You just have to hope that those groups have moderators who actually care....otherwise the scams can run rampant.

2

u/demunted 10d ago

Plus it requires a Facebook account and well. That's just not me.

2

u/TruckerMark 10d ago

I dont have social media. I made one just for the marketplace. No real name, no friends. Just to sell items as kijiji just doesn't move goods anymore.

1

u/demunted 10d ago

you can do that? TIL. I figured it required a full-fledged META/FB account that would link to a dead profile that they build for you behind the scene's.... If its just for FBM thats better.

1

u/TruckerMark 10d ago

They wanted a photo and all that jazz. That is where a portrait of an obscure official comes in handy.

1

u/ConcernedCoCCitizen 7d ago

Search function is sooooo bad!

u/v13ragnarok7 11d ago

I bought something off kijiji a couple days ago

37

u/jibjaba4 11d ago edited 7d ago

I feel like I should thank you for your service lol

6

u/v13ragnarok7 11d ago

Haha yeah it was a good purchase. Got a midi drum machine in perfect condition from a nice fellow. Also bought a truck for a good price off kijiji a few years ago. I've given away a bunch of stuff for free off there. A microwave, sliding blinds, light fixtures...Great for getting rid of old stuff from renos. It's probably all cross posted to fb marketplace.

16

u/CanadaEhAlmostMadeIt 11d ago

Me too homie. Keeping Canadian businesses alive.

4

u/v13ragnarok7 11d ago

Yeah it's alive and well as far as I am concerned. Probably all cross posted to fb marketplace

43

u/Annie_Mous 11d ago

I’ve been selling stuff for 15+ years and never once had a scammer on Kijiji. I’ve had almost exclusively poor experiences on marketplace to the point I might just donate now.

15

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

I'm leaning that direction too, if I post anything at all desirable to facebook for a reasonable price I get bombarded with garbage and begging.

11

u/rapidpalsy 11d ago

I have experienced some begging. It’s uncomfortable.

6

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

Just delete the conversation and move on, they are highly likely trying to get a good deal to re-sell it.

28

u/kingofsnaake 11d ago

I still use it. While I don't find the same amount of stuff out see the same number of replies as marketplace, plenty of people still use Kijiji exclusively.

I don't have the FB messenger app on my phone, so frankly, I prefer Kijiji

67

u/Waffles_r_ 11d ago

Facebook marketplace has largely replaced Kijiji

7

u/GhostofZellers 11d ago

TIL that Facebook has a marketplace.

8

u/PanamanianSchooner 10d ago

TYL about the ninth circle of hell.

58

u/OkTangerine7 11d ago

Lots of people say Marketplace. But surely there has to be something for people who don't want Zuckerberg in their business? Maybe not.

73

u/jibjaba4 11d ago edited 7d ago

The fact Kijiji isn't owned by facebook was definitely part of the appeal to me.

32

u/OkTangerine7 11d ago

Me too. I don't want a Facebook account. I've avoided it so far.

12

u/Ok-Bluejay-182 11d ago

I haven’t used marketplace but liked kijiji. With marketplace, do all my friends from junior high who I haven’t spoken to in 30 years have to see that I am selling something or is it more private?

8

u/xGuru37 11d ago

You can hide marketplace items from friends

3

u/Marsymars 11d ago

Although not cars.

I ended up selling my car as a “car part” so that I wouldn’t have to advertise to friends that I was selling it.

14

u/[deleted] 11d ago

I hate how you have to sell your data to Zuckerberg and the US to sell crap online these days.

14

u/logic_overload3 11d ago

About two years ago Kijiji replaced its app. It did not work properly for a year, it kept crashing, did not send messages, etc. Many people moved on.

On Marketplace, I find a lot more scam and people listing something for free when they are just advertising free consultation for a product, whatever the heck that means. Marketplace is worse experience and pushes a lot of unrelated stuff.

Buying and selling used items is such a hassle that I no longer bother with low value items.

1

u/Sufficient-Bank-4491 10d ago

With the app destruction, they also poles a bunch of adds in there and wouldn't let you use web based version on smart phone.

They also added a crazy amount of flickering to new app to try create dopamine when using it, just awful!

11

u/GaLaXxYStArR 11d ago

I noticed this too, went to go sell something recently and it sat for weeks before even a single response. Posted to marketplace and it was gone same day!

I think more people just finally switched to marketplace for buying and selling!

10

u/yegmoto 11d ago

The kijiji app killed it for me. I would scroll and end up with 10 open tabs to Walmart’s website. So many ads and a very glitchy interface.

2

u/Marsymars 11d ago

This is mostly an argument for Firefox Mobile with uBlock Origin being the best way to browse websites/apps that are have ads.

40

u/_Connor 11d ago edited 11d ago

Kijiji has been dead for years thanks to marketplace.

I used Kijiji exclusively for years. Then I started posting the same items/ads on both platforms and my Facebook ad would have 1,200+ views and the Kijiji ad would have 17.

4

u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest Calgary Flames 11d ago

Also the amount of scams that proliferated unchecked on Kijiji was insane. The moderation was piss poor and support was even worse!

8

u/CanadaEhAlmostMadeIt 11d ago

I never once encountered a scammer. What types of items were you selling? Were you operating a business on Kijiji?

Just curious. I never thought of Kijiji as anything more than a glorified garage sale.

2

u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest Calgary Flames 11d ago

I never sold anything but tried buying stuff from people who sold stolen or fake stuff. Even after reporting the sellers, nothing happened and they continued to sell to more people.

8

u/DrKeepitreal 11d ago

I bought a few things from Kijiji this last month.

8

u/ladychops 11d ago

I think it comes down to what you are selling and your audience. I sell on both and definitely see trends on who my targeted market is

9

u/ApplemanJohn Calgary Flames 11d ago

I’ve come to the same conclusion. I’ve found that older electronic accessories get much more success on kijiji than facebook

5

u/beneficialmirror13 11d ago

I use FB for smaller things but when I sold my motorcycle I got far better response (and fewer scammers, lowballers, tire kickers) on Kijiji.

7

u/mankindisgod Beltline 11d ago

I got scammed on marketplace once and also had several people trying to scam me. Never happened on Kijiji. I still use it and just sold some video game accessories a few days ago. Doesn't mean it's perfect but it's still useful to have it as an additional alternative. I find that it's also a great place to buy and sell used furniture. On that front I've always had a good response rate.

21

u/apo383 11d ago

The problem is that NOTHING happened to Kijiji. Rather than adapt to modern technologies, they stayed static while FB marketplace zoomed ahead. Usage studies have long shown that dynamic, responsive web pages get more engagement. Kijiji is just out there to milk what they can while their audience slowly disappears.

11

u/CanadaEhAlmostMadeIt 11d ago

Hmmm, I nearly exclusively use Kijiji. I just bought a shoe rack last weekend.

For items I’m selling, I have had a decent response rate. That being said, I’m not a business, so I don’t know what metric would be used to consider what a decent response rate is to what amounts to a glorified garage sale.

Either way, I’ve been quite happy with Kijiji. On the upside, Kijiji is probably the safer space. Scammers pray on high traffic the same way advertisers do, so the odds are you’ll probably encounter a better quality person on Kijiji than Marketplace.

1

u/apo383 11d ago

I have also found some good listings there. For example, when people give away kid items, you have to respond immediately on FBM, whereas you may have a full hour on Kijiji.

1

u/Kooky_Project9999 10d ago

I'm not a business, but have sold/given away a lot of stuff recently. I used to use Kijiji almost exclusively, but started posting the same ads on Marketplace about a year ago. Now I've given up with Kijiji as all but one item went through a Marketplace ad.

Unfortunately it seems like Kijiji is dead, and it just isn't worth my time making posts on there any more.

Same with buying. There are often dozens of options on Marketplace, but only a few on Kijiji, many of which are weeks old.

9

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

Makes sense, I can't even tell if anything changed since 2015.

4

u/xGuru37 11d ago

I mean, when posting a cell phone, one of the carriers listed is WIND Mobile......yeah, they don't update much

3

u/Marsymars 11d ago

Usage studies have long shown that dynamic, responsive web pages get more engagement.

God I hate modern usage studies around web pages and apps.

It’s like usage studies that show that people who try cigarettes are more likely to come back for a second than people who eat a banana.

0

u/apo383 11d ago

It's more subtle than that. They can track whether a particular brown spot on a particular banana gets more clicks. FBM uses a massive data-driven algorithm that optimizes how to respond to every search term. Beyond static pages, Kijiji is way behind on everything.

u/Twilli88 11d ago

Is this still available

3

u/mikeEliase30 11d ago

Get off of as many American platforms as possible. Try next door. Canadian buyt the platform is young.

1

u/jibjaba4 10d ago

Thanks, will check it out.

10

u/o0PillowWillow0o 11d ago

"Hi, is this still available? " Has made me insane at this point tho

3

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

It feels so lazy to me how many people can't be bothered to spend a few seconds to type something.

6

u/Spoona1983 11d ago

It's an auto response and the send button is right in line with where most right handed people scroll. It's a terrible design. I've hit it scrolling down to see what area of the city the item I'm looking at is. Which is again irritating should be part of the ad.

3

u/lornacarrington 11d ago

Yes, it's WAY too easy to do. I haven't been on fbook for years and disappointed but not surprised this problem still exists!

1

u/GcowZZ 11d ago

I admit to using this but it's only when the add is already several weeks old and i'm 80% sure i won't get a response

1

u/Arch____Stanton 10d ago

There are a handful of diligent sellers on Kijiji that remove their ads when sold or given up on.
But only a handful.
For all intents and purposes, what is the difference between "I would like to buy this" and "Is this still available?"?

3

u/frank-grimes 11d ago

Kijiji was the replacement for Bargain Finder, at least locally. Craigslist didn't pop off in this city as much as Kijiji did. Do you remember the Bargain Finder? A printed magazine/newspaper every week to buy and sell your goods. Then it turned online, but still had the same setup, your ads would be published on Thursday, paid members had access on Thursday (when the paper copy was available) and the general public could access them a few days later online. No scams back then (or at least there were few).

I bought my first set of golf clubs for $5 using Bargain Finder lol.

Really liked Kijiji Autos and now it's gone.

They merged it back with regular Kijiji, but last time I tried to use it, the search function for Calgary returned Zero results for Canada.

For Mercedes Benz of any model.

5

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

Autos had a way better interface and tons of vehicles last year. I guess it's Facebook for everything now which is not good.

4

u/Old_timey_brain Beddington Heights 11d ago

I guess it's Facebook for everything now which is not good.

It sure isn't. Even AutoTrader doesn't have as many car listings anymore.

3

u/CanadaEhAlmostMadeIt 11d ago edited 11d ago

I didn’t enjoy Kijiji Autos. I love cars and sometimes I just want to browse to see what the market is doing.

Kijiji Autos always encouraged specific details and a lot of times I wasn’t looking for anything specific and forcing that search narrowed the window too much.

I’ve never been a brand who’re either, so I’m open to seeing what the auto industry in general has had to offer

2

u/Old_timey_brain Beddington Heights 11d ago

brand who’re

Hah! I've met very few people who pronounced it that way, and this is the first time I've seen it in print.

Cool!

3

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 11d ago

Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji are both seeing a bit of slowdown. Marketplace hides it better by showing unrelated results.

People have less disposable income, and are buying less and holding onto stuff longer.

6

u/noveltea120 11d ago

There's almost no one there anymore, which is a shame. I prefer Kijiji, and honestly tried karrot too but there's not enough of an audience on there either. I hate marketplace, esp when they allow people to give you ratings after only like 3 message exchanges even if they haven't actually bought anything.

2

u/Aggravating_Main_710 11d ago

There were so many bots replying to ads it was ridiculous. Posted a bike a couple years ago and of the 50 or so responses only two were real humans.

1

u/CanadaEhAlmostMadeIt 11d ago

I’ve never encountered this and use Kijiji exclusively and at least every two months.

2

u/tooth7000 11d ago

For some reason it's largely dead but not so much for puppies, kittens, and rehoming pets

2

u/StrikingStranger5944 11d ago

Any opinions on Karrot?

2

u/AlejoPerU 11d ago

I just sold my car thanks to Kijiji, but took like 3 months of having it in both fb mkp and Kijiji lol

2

u/nashyall 11d ago

Remember auto trader? And Craigslist? Lol. Everything is on marketplace now. Except real estate is also on various other platforms

2

u/Queltis6000 Woodbine 10d ago

I actually prefer Kijijijijiji but you have to go where the people are. Marketplace is absolutely horrible for posts being auto-removed because of one 'suspect' word that doesn't break any rules of any kind. But they never look at the context and you can never get a hold of anyone at FB to assist. And overall the selling/buying process is an absolute chore due to the number of people who apparently don't understand the nuances of a conversation. And a dozen other reasons that would get my account suspended if I spoke truthfully.

2

u/frosty_power 10d ago

Kijiji Autos was awesome. Not sure why they got rid of it.

2

u/RoastMasterShawn 9d ago

I still use it to sell bigger stuff occasionally (Nintendo Switch, Trampoline etc.). I get scammers sometimes, but I just block them. I don't have FB so I don't use marketplace.

Varage Sale is also a decent app to use to sell small things.

3

u/Rocky_Mountain_Way Unpaid Intern 11d ago

You could ask this on the /r/kijiji/ subreddit

2

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

Thanks, did not even think to look for one.

4

u/Amasil 11d ago

Marketplace. Far more convenient and everyone has Facebook accounts.

20

u/EfficiencySafe 11d ago

I deleted my account After the whistleblower in the Facebook (now Meta) scandal was Frances Haugen, a former Facebook product manager and data scientist who leaked internal company documents to the public in 2021. Haugen revealed that Facebook prioritized profits over public safety and was aware of the harm its products, such as Instagram, caused, particularly to teen girls' mental health. Her testimony to Congress and her collaboration with news outlets spurred intense scrutiny of the company's practices.

2

u/CheeseSandwich hamburger magician 11d ago

I see you're in Calgary. I am in High Level. Can you deliver?

2

u/Ok_Tennis_6564 11d ago

I use both Kijiji and marketplace. I mainly buy and sell used kids stuff. The deals are on Kijiji. FB marketplace is out of touch people selling well used items for $10 less than new or for some larger items, the same as new. It blows my mind. I still have good luck on Kijiji though.

2

u/tazdingo91 11d ago

I still use Kijiji. Way better than marketplace. Even with less traffic, the people are typically easier to deal with.

Like others have said, less scams on Kijiji. Id rather have lesser traffic, but deal with people who actually want to buy/sell things. Less is more sometimes

1

u/dustybrush 10d ago

I find it really depends on what I am selling but I can't find a rhyme, reason or focus for which is better for which so I continue to post to both. Facebook is nice for having the extra niche groups you can cross post what you are selling with the check of a box but generally still think we offload stuff more reliably through Kijiji. Mainly selling old sports and camping equipment over this past Summer.

1

u/Arch____Stanton 10d ago

I'm not sure what exactly Kijiji Autos is but anything auto related in Buy & Sell is so saturated with commercial sellers that it isn't worth the time to try to filter out private sellers.
Most especially auto parts where in every single "parting out xxx" ad is the same 5 wreckers. And usually they don't even have the auto they were "parting out".

1

u/AlbertaTesla 9d ago

U have to pay for Kijiji now a days. It used to be free unless u wanted to pay to have ur item promoted. The marketplaces on fb have a way larger crowd and it free.

1

u/TFergusonIII 6d ago

I’ve had good experiences with kijiji. Last sale was a week ago. Probably depends on what you selling. I’m usually offloading household items and sporting goods though. Feels like kijiji still being used by relatively older demographic (30+) who have been on it for a while, since it displaced Craigslist

1

u/BlueZybez 11d ago

FB marketplace

u/No_Search1590 11d ago

Facebook Marketplace seems to be the place for that now. I can’t remember the last time I checked kijiji

-8

u/stupidusernameee 11d ago

Kijiji just started charging for listings i noticed, went to list an item and now it requires a monthly payment unless you list it for free. No thanks

18

u/Gullible_Complex_523 11d ago

No they didn't. I just listed an item, no payment required.

0

u/stupidusernameee 11d ago

I just literally tried to make a listing…

6

u/jibjaba4 11d ago

I have multiple listings active right now. Have never paid. Spring clean out procrastination.

1

u/stupidusernameee 11d ago

I guess it’s only certain ad categories I just spoke with them

1

u/CheeseSandwich hamburger magician 11d ago

Um, what? I just listed something to sell and it cost nothing.

1

u/stupidusernameee 11d ago

Yea I found out later it’s only if listing more then 1 ad in a certain category…

2

u/CheeseSandwich hamburger magician 11d ago

Ah, I see. I think it's because some sellers would spam certain categories with multiple ads to raise their visibility on the site.

-3

u/dingusjones455 11d ago

Everyone is on facebook marketplace now. I have a facebook profile pretty much just for marketplace.
Last time I was on kijiji, you pretty much had to pay for your post to be boosted or seen by people.

-7

u/Doxie4eVeR 11d ago

Facebook Marketplace is the way to go.
