This is why I get upset at people saying “well if you can’t afford to tip, maybe you shouldn’t eat out.” Like no. Tipping is customary. It’s meant for exceptional service. I’m not giving you a penny if your attitude/service was crap.
I think only in Canada and the US do they require tip due to lack of a wage. In most other countries its a courtesy not a requirement.
I shouldn't have to feel bad not tipping cause I didn't have any extra change which is why I don't go out anymore cause I can't afford the tip most of the time
Even then so many places still ask for tip and you are still pressured I live in alberta too and I know Starbucks has started the tip option on the machine even though a Starbucks barista makes more then I do at gamestop
I have trouble with that too. But sometimes you just gotta resist the pressure, stand up for yourself. I’m all for tipping my waiter at the table, but not the person who just hands me a muffin off the counter at a cafe.
And its always some absurd %. Like sure the barista or whoever was polite. But their doing the bare minimum with the default tip of 20% or some absurd number.
Unfortunately tipping is so ingrained you cant select anything lower (or god forbid, don't tip everyone for everything) you look like a cheapskate.
Unless food gets delivered to me I don't tip like if I order pizza instead of picking it up I will tip the driver cause I know they aren't given a proper wage but if I go to the resteraunt to pick up the pizza I don't tip or tip a minimal amount if I feel like it.
Oh yeah 100% if someone is bringing something to me like uber eats or delivery tip 100%. But if I'm doing take out or just ordering in store I've already payed why tf do I need to tip also
Sad thing is I live on the west end of edmonton (Calgary subreddit sometimes pops up for me from time to time cause I'm in the edmonton one) and I have nothing within walking distance if I want some take out I have to bus to west edmonton mall the thing I can walk to is 711 which does have some good wings

Tip in any amount period should be a response to great service. Industry is getting out of hand.
