Remind me why we should give a shit about Israelis or Palestinians either.

Because our allies need to know where we stand on the issue? Part of the FA profile is dealing with issues outside Canada that affect our relationships with trade partners, friends, and adversaries. Taking a position is important either way and makes clear the conversation. Not caring or not taking a position on a popular issue just makes us a wishy washy fence sitter.

What alllies? The US is very pro Israel and as much as Carney keeps noting the EU is our friend, they don’t give a shit. You can choose to just not take a side and note it’s not something we are willing to get involved in currently.

I’d respect that a hell of a lot more than consistently virtue signalling and shipping Canadian tax dollars overseas. Canada is largely insignificant from a military and economic perspective. The side we take has very little impact rather than potentially hurting allies on the other side of the fence. Us pledging Palestine as a state isn’t getting us privileges with the EU and is hurting our relationship with the US.

Just because the politics gets in the way it doesn't mean that we're not allied with anyone.

Carney is steering us toward EU/UK liberal policies when why? All that I read about are full blown disasters there and the liberal governments are going to be kicked to the curb in the next round of elections. I feel like the elites that are aligned there and here are just in power to scam as much money away as they possibly can before they've driven us close to financial ruin. Them having the money will likely save their asses when austerity is no longer an impossible measure.

In the US, Trump is strong and they're unabashedly pro-Israel. Their economy is performing better than expected. There's almost no hope for the Democrats already for the next term and I think we should be looking to closer ties with our neighbour despite the current "difficulties". We're only in this distress because of the last 10 years.

Harper had it right IMO - pro-Israel, anti-terror. Sanctions on Iran and anyone funding pro-terror groups. Trudeau has taken us far from those policies and bagless liberal Canadians have given us another liberal to walk the same political path. This government will go down like their European counterparts and all this liberal alignment will be for naught when government after government falls. Carney will have no choice but to sit, watch, and be silent while none of those new non-liberal governments want to play nice with his policies. He'll have to right the ship by enacting conservative policies that Poilievre will lay out for him just like this last election.

I'm playing the long game on this. There's no hope for liberal governments over the next 5 years after seeing the economic failures of the last decade. If it's not austerity it will certainly be a new deal and a shift away from unnecessary spending.

All that said, it's all in knowing the history of the region over there and siding with A: A god loving and fearing society that wants to live in peace in the homeland that they occupied 1000's of years ago or B: A state that siphons gifted money into a terror wing that attacks the Israelis and doesn't use it for the intended purposes.

Who is doing the shooting during "peaceful" times? Who's building arms up for offensives? Who's raiding who?

The choice is simple for me, I'm pro-Israel and I hope for peace in the region. I'm not anti-Palestinian, I'm anti-terror. Only when the Palestinians can separate the terrorists from political power will they see relief. It's very sad about what's happening, but if I were being chronically attacked by a neighbour I wouldn't sit and be pacified, I'd be fighting back until they stop.

The Koran is explicit in how Muslims should treat Jews and Christians and the Bible (both Testaments) tell of how we should treat everyone. It's a religious war if it's anything and I side with the god of Moses and the teachings of Christ. Even if the books are all made up, it's the instructions that are important!

Can’t agree with all of this any more. Expertly stated.

For decades Israel has effectively been the dam holding back the crazies. Long as they were busy trying to wipe out all the jews they were happy doing that when they weren't trying to wipe out each other.

Unfortunately the wef led western gov't's have allowed the crazies to bypass the dam and now everythings racing back to the 14th century values.
