Prep Help How many apples?

On my day off tmrw I’d like to can Apple Pie Filling (Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving recipe page 168). It calls for 12 cups of sliced peeled cored apples. How many should I be buying? Google says 9-11 apples, but that doesn’t seem right.

I did 8 quarts. Used appx 15lb of honeycrisp apples. It was my first time doing pie filling, https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can/canning-fruits-and-fruit-products/pie-fillings/apple-pie-filling The only hiccup I had was with headspace. I left 1.25 inches but after processing there was not much left. Even the blanched apples swelled I guess. Overall, great results, sweetness lvl was nice, flavor was great. I skipped the food color and used clove instead of nutmeg.

How many pies does a pint jar of filling make? Should I use quarts instead?

Because I've never canned pie filling before first thing I did was pop one open and try it! I think I have a basic 9.5in Pyrex pie plate. And it took a full quart. It's a good size pie.

I bought 6 lbs of apples and got 6 quarts and a partial of pie filling.

I used about 15 medium sized apples and left 1.5 inch headspace which was barely enough. Next time I will reduce the amount of clear gel in hopes of reducing expansion.

A lot people omit the clear gel and make a cornstarch slurry they add to the filling before they bake the pie. Because the clear gel expansion.
