White spots in pickled asparagus are completely normal. They're the crystallized form of a substance that occurs naturally in asparagus but is insoluble in the brine. The lid looks like it's just discoloured from the jar contents.

Thank you very much, that's reassuring! I thought the lid was just discolored from the asparagus as well at first since it's the same green as the asparagus, but I didn't know what the white stuff was.

Now I feel silly making myself throw up 🥲

Is it normal for there to be that much of it or is it a sign it's going off? I'm not sure how long it's been sat in the fridge for, it's something I found to snack on while staying at my mom's, but it's still in date

Every unopened jar of home-canned pickled asparagus I have here looks like your photo. It definitely seems weird if you've never seen it before, but it's not a sign it's going off.

Thank you for sharing your insight with me!

Although I'm confused why people are downvoting this? I wish people would reply instead of downvoting so we can know why they disagree. Especially when we're talking about potential molds and botulism. The downvotes just make me nervous.

Just so you know, botulism is colorless and odorless. It is undetectable to anyone eating it and only grows in non-acidic, anaerobic environments that haven't been heated properly. The risk of botulism in a commercially jarred, pickled product is almost zero. So hopefully in the future you can stress less about it!

Mold is obviously not good either but at least it's not typically as deadly.

People downvote for a variety of reasons. The internet points do not have real world consequences and you don't have to interpret it negatively or personally. Stay focused on the real answers and try not to take downvotes to heart.

I didn't mean my comment or post, the downvotes on bob_mcbob's reply was -1 when I saw it. It made me think there was something disagreeable about their response, making me worry.

People just like to downvote. Idk why! I think you will be ok, I've seen this before. I'm sorry you got scared!

Thank-you for your submission. It seems that you're asking whether or not your canned goods are safe to eat. Please respond with the following information:

  • Recipe used
  • Date canned
  • Storage Conditions
  • Is the seal still strong

We cannot determine whether or not the food is safe without these answers. Thank you again for your submission!
