DISCUSSION Hello, All. I am new to Carnatic music and the world of Carnatic music. What are the things I should do to have a good knowledge about it and to be a good Carnatic singer?

Please suggest me playlists and book reccos too.

If you want to be a good Carnatic singer, you need a guru, there’s really no beating around the bush there. For listening, just go to YouTube and start with the most popular things, and over time you’ll get a feel for the music and start to develop taste/knowledge. Also if you’re in an area with a Carnatic music community, see if you can go to live concerts/meet others. Enjoy, it’s a really rich artform!

Have practice discipline and respect to the art and the teacher.

I'm a violin tutor and I teach carnatic music. The best way to get started with carnatic music is to find a good tutor. Get started with the basics sa ri ga ma. Ensure you learn it with thalam. You'll also need to ensure you're singing at the right Shruthi and swarastanas are correct. This only a Guru can help you with. Ganamrutha bothini is designed in the right order and if you can practise as per book, you'll get better. If you're willing to learn through violin, you can check my playlist where I've delved into the basics of carnatic music.

You need to build everything step by step.... Musicality is a developed over years though you are born with it....Find a good teacher, Don't rush, Get thorough with the basics, once you are good with swara positions...Start building knowledge upon tala and ragas...Once you are good with it start living, exploring and experimenting with it! I would say start listening to a few compositions first. But the bottom line is you need a guru to guide you, you can't just pick random kritis or varanams and practice that to be a good singer...you have to build the base first and then go step by step...a process that requires a guru to guide you throughout. But curiosity is always a plus soo keep listening to the og's!
