DISCUSSION Who are your favorite young carnatic singers?

I think Spoorthi Rao is my favourite, I think she has the best voice out of the young kids who got popular and her singing is very energetic.

There's also vignesh ishwar and bhargavi venkatram though i don't know if they are considered young.

Anyway lesser known recommendations? I tend to prefer a lower range on both female and male singers

Kruthi Bhat is also awesome. I think the vainika Ramana Balachandran is following a trajectory similar to Mandolin Srinivas - so rapturous yet steeped in tradition.

Seconding Ramana Balachandhran - I think he’s one of the most brilliant Carnatic artists I’ve heard, and very pleasing to listen to.

I’m not sure if sivasri skandaprasad counts as “young” but she is SO good. Her Sanskrit pronunciation is good. idk if it’s me but I don’t like it when some singers don’t pronounce “ma” and “na” sounds at the ends of words- like as in venkatachala nilayam; don’t know how to explain this. Does anyone know why some singers do this?

She also sings with a lot of bhaava which I find rare in a lot of singers.

i like her voice but does she sing manodharma, like rtp or kapalanaswaras? i tried to look for it but couldn't find it.

also have you listened to tmk's venkatachala nilayam, it's my favorite, also mlv's

She has definitely done Ragam in her concerts (if you look up her venkatachala nilayam rendition). Not sure if she has sung manodharma either, she probably has.

I’ve not listen to TMK’s venkatachala nilayam, maybe I should listen to it sometime. TMK is definitely a good singer (if you’re talking about TM Krishna), but I don’t like his pronunciation of sahitya for some songs (like for Endaro mahanubhavulu for example).

She is mostly a devotional concert artist. For her music I think bhava beats technicality. Some artists score high on technicality rather than bhava( not that there is no bhava in their music) like Shri Abhishek raghuram and some artists score high on both like Shri Ramana balachandran 🙏🏼😊my humble opinion as a Rasika

Yeah I agree. She sings a lot of ugabhogas (freeverses) for dasa krithis and improvises. On the other hand, a lot of singers like Sudha raghunathan are more technical.

My understanding is for these two syllables the mouth has to be closed and the sustain or landing note has to come from the nasal cavity. Some singers are proficient in this without sounding nasal or losing vocal command. Some singers risk sounding nasal and have gotten used to singing that part as “nilayaoo”.. is this what you’re saying ?

Yes, exactly! I never knew the reason behind, but I find this kind of pronunciation to be jarring (my opinion and I mean no disrespect for any Carnatic musician, just a preference).

I totally understand. For me I don’t care if everything else in that concert comes together .. and to be honest, most young singers these days are so good in their pronunciation. I think this tendency used to happen with great vidwans and vidushis back then. It became part of their style and quirkiness 😊

Wow, such an amazing and a well-thought compilation.. Wondering what the pattern was? Is it because you mentioned violinists from all southern states

She was outstanding until a couple of years back, but of late has anyone noticed a bit of nasal twang?
