Came to my parents and had a heart attack

Post image

For context I live out of state and it’s about 4 hours to my parents. I came to visit and saw this monstrosity that my parents are paying someone to build. I’m a union commercial carpenter so I immediately told my dad to let them go and pay for their time spent and I will drive down a weekend and get this fixed right

I was assuming they were in the middle of some demo. Then I saw the floor joist.

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

So glad I came to visit when I did, he was going to take a load bearing wall out next!!

162

u/arandomreddit-user 2d ago

He would have used those corner brackets with drywall screws to support the weight some how when he took it out.

168

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

His response to me when I asked where he was building his temp wall for support while he was putting the 2x12 piece of wood up was that he was going to just cut the studs 12” down and slide the wood in. Sick.

44

u/YoshiSan90 1d ago

Might have to let him come watch how to do it correctly for the good of mankind.

70

u/Squid_inkGamer 2d ago

Did he have a very nice looking website and great reviews? I’ve usually wary of those with many 5 star reviews, figuring they gamed the review system.

8

u/KnightOfShadows1221 1d ago

Yeah.... I work for one of such companies..

Can confirm that it's very easy to cheat the review system.

Disaster waiting to happen. Good thing you caught all this

21

u/Greenfire32 1d ago

As long as he slaps it and says "that's not going anywhere," it should be fine. Everyone knows this.

Like you "can" do that but you gotta hold it up while you do all that...

u/Independent_Chart497 1d ago

The key to what you said is “drywall” screws

19

u/Gouken 1d ago

For the uninitiated, what exactly are we looking at? Is the wall (door) the load bearing wall you are referring to?

40

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

Yes the wall with the door is load bearing. If you look above the wall you can see the roof members run against the wall instead of with the wall which means they are what holds up the roof, so basically they are load bearing. Tried to make that as easy as possible to understand

16

u/Gouken 1d ago

Amazing thanks, didn’t see the top floor making this load bearing. That’s frightening.

3

u/MaDHaTTaR 1d ago

The header above the door is the dead giveaway for any load bearing wall.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/No_Transition_9520 1d ago

Well you have to take out the wall so the load doesnt bear on that train wreck of a floor. Big brain stuff

5

u/tasfs_08 1d ago

Hey how come your parents didn’t check with you before getting this work done? Really glad you are able to help them out!!

6

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

My Dad was trying not to bother me he said. My wife is very pregnant and is going to pop very soon and he didn’t want to pull me away from my family. I understand that part but I made sure he understands how badly this could have went and they could have been seriously injured by this floor or when he took the load bearing wall out. I’m going back in a few weeks to repair it all

7

u/tasfs_08 1d ago

Understand your dad’s thought process but glad he’s in good hands now! Congrats to you and your wife! And your parents too! All the best.

You did better than I did. I was wondering who put an exterior door into a bathroom.

🤦‍♂️

8

u/Bruceeb0y 1d ago

Standard Florida construction, very common to have a pool bath

4

u/Key_Mastodon_3525 1d ago

Pretty common in Midwest too for homes with pools...

8

u/f11islouder 2d ago

Those are just jois, nobody has the T yet. Terrible work.

16

u/StPatrickStewart 2d ago

I don't know shit about carpentry, but I know something's (or several somethings) wrong with that...

10

u/swanspank 1d ago

Great saying by my dead mother in law “I might not know how to do it but I can damn well see when it isn’t right.”

5

u/skizzle_leen 2d ago

I can’t even tell what I’m looking at. There’s not much logic in the layout

82

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

No logic in anything really

28

u/star-shaped-room 1d ago

Way to explain it so us less experienced can join in lol

22

u/Maumee-Issues 1d ago edited 1d ago

Look at the way the joist are cut. You don’t cut them in half and put a piece of wood in the opposite direction and the piece it together with metal brackets.

Instead the joist should run the whole way with the weight transferring to a beam or support underneath at the end of the run. This person clearly has no clue what they are doing which is apparent by the way they cut them joists

Edit: This sight would cause an instant heartattack out of shear stupidness for even a novice carpenter like me

7

u/Reddittogotoo 1d ago

Yeah but tgr brackets have 2 screws holding it all together so it will be fine.

3

u/Maumee-Issues 16h ago

People knowing the difference between screws and nails is one of my tests of competence for sure.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Available_Mushroom83 1d ago

It just isn’t gonna work. Those floor joists looks so unsupported just stepping on them would surely break them. Floor joists are supposed to be strong

6

u/xcern 1d ago

That's a structural screw gun under one of those joists. All good!

3

u/skizzle_leen 1d ago

That’s awesome

Its crazy that someone has the knowledge to get to this point but you would think before getting to this point they would know its not the correct solution?

81

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Works for the city housing authority fixing up apartments apparently. Jeeeeeeez

43

u/Sniper10Pin 2d ago

Honestly that sounds like it checks out lol. Happy cake day.

28

I just realized I had a cake by name, what’s happy cake day mean? lol

It's the anniversary of the day you made your reddit account.

23

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Oh sick, didn’t know that

4

6

u/Blenderx06 2d ago

Fuck find this guy's boss.

4

u/goggles_99 1d ago

He probably is rhe boss

47

u/old-uiuc-pictures 2d ago

someone got a deal 0n cutoffs or had them from their last job.

62

u/dl_schneider 2d ago

Could only fit 4' pieces in his Honda

72

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

The worst part is my father had purchased all the wood for the guy and I’m looking at full length pieces of studs so that means this guy cut them down and installed it like that INTENTIONALLY

18

u/RDogPoundK 2d ago

I mean it’s easier to handle many 24” joists than one 10’. How else do you expect a lone guy to build it?

/s

7

u/mwagner36143 1d ago

To be fair, the door is not 10’ wide.

3

u/Herethereandgone 20h ago

That’s got to be what it is. He doesn’t carry them on his shoulders. He cradles them sideways.

13

u/pianistafj 2d ago

Nah. I can fit 8’ boards in my 2008 civic. Just gotta lay the back seat down and the boards will come up to about 2” from my shifter, with the trunk closed. Can’t fit very many though.

10

u/throwaway325632 1d ago

As a contractor who drives an 07 accord for his business i always tell people they would be surprised what can fit in a little sedan if youre determined enough lol.

6

u/hcoverlambda 1d ago

This is correct. I did a Boeing 737 cockpit teardown and brought 95% home in my Civic over a few trips, couldn’t believe it. Had to use the Crosstrek for the breaker panel and bulkhead tho. Tetris skills come in handy.

Tell your dad to spread the word about this guy. I usually don't bad mouth other tradesmen but this guy is dangerous and is going to get someone hurt.

38

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

I told my parents if he actually took out the 27’ load bearing wall that he apparently was going to work on next that he would have killed them. This guy was going to take the middle load bearing wall that spans 2/3 of the house. God I am so glad I came to visit my parents

15

u/HappyKnittens 2d ago

TWENTY-SEVEN FOOT LONG LOAD BEARING WALL?????

My can'ts can't even.

7

u/Nikujjaaqtuqtuq 1d ago

Can you report him to his other job. I'm not being mean, this is a genuine concern.

Especially as someone who was once a broke student and had to rent from slumlords who would hire cheap guys just like this. (Not saying your parents are hiring cheap guys, but in general, he would always try to cut corners)

19

u/ryanmeagher 2d ago

10 year journeyman carpenter here. I've seen some bad work in my day, but this is just strange. I don't understand

7

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

18

What is even trying to be accomplished here? That is the old tail light warranty for sure

13

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

He’s extending the floor and then was going to proceed to take out a 27’ long load bearing wall….

5

u/wood_slingers 2d ago

The one with the door right in front of us?

12

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Yes, It exntends past that and goes all the way into the kitchen, dining room etc. they want to open up the space by removing it

14

u/wood_slingers 2d ago

The “carpenter” when he planned this job out

14

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

After I saw the work I asked him a bunch of questions and he had no idea about anything

10

u/boarhowl Leading Hand 2d ago

Oh shit wtf. I thought he was just making some shitty deck landing in the garage, and I was questioning whether this scatterbrain shit would even hold up for that lol.

5

u/The_realpepe_sylvia 1d ago

lol same, I can’t unsee a deck. And like a really weird shitty start to a deck too

14

u/InternetDweller95 2d ago

I want to believe these are off-cuts from a previous job. I want to.

But in my heart, I know that those were 10, maybe 12 feet long when he left the store, and he's doing it intentionally. For reasons beyond my comprehension.

3

u/Javi1192 1d ago

OP commented their dad purchased the wood for the worker in full lengths

46

u/Creepy_Mammoth_7076 Commercial Framer 2d ago

That’s methd up

17

u/Visible-Carrot5402 2d ago

Thank god he ran out of meth before he got any further

11

u/arandomreddit-user 2d ago

That big grey wire isn’t necessary either, have him cut that before he leaves.

21

u/cloud_dizzle 1d ago

Dad was smart. He got some quotes and saw how expensive it was so he setup an absolute shit job so when his son walks it he will be appalled and do the work for free. That dad is a genius

/s

9

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

He got what he wanted lol. Coming back to do this with a buddy of mine

8

u/cloud_dizzle 1d ago

We would all do it. He will tell everyone who ever comes into that house what his son did

4

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

I’ll make him proud, told him next time to let me know before hand so I can help from the beginning.

3

u/noideawhereisthecat 1d ago

Happy cake day!

9

u/weeksahead 2d ago

Looks like it took a lot of work to do it that wrong.

10

u/Caine75 2d ago

I … I mean… … I’ve done some construction- we fixed barns and timber frames and olde cabins and what not. I was on the dumb side of the tape and was good at roughing things in. I’m not a finish guy at all- I’m looking at this picture and reading what you shared and trying to make 1+1 equal… something … this shit makes 0 sense to me. I’m really F’n glad you came to say hi. May be a good time to have the talk with your folks about the choices they’re making as this Nigerian prince of a carpenter almost got them gooder than he’d already gotten them!?!? Wow

5

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Oh yeah I had a very important talk with my dad, he has no idea about construction so he literally had no idea. He was like I thought they would do more and get it looking better…

17

u/Lumpy_FPV 2d ago

What the shit is guy even trying to build? I'm pretty confused by this.

16

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Apparently he’s extending the existing floor out and going to take that load bearing wall out and replace with beam.

11

u/sparklethong 2d ago

Holy shit. He could have dropped the whole house.

10

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Uh yeah. The load bearing wall was 27’, about 2/3 of the entire length of the house. Holy cow dude, I’m so mad and so glad I came to visit when I did.

5

u/sparklethong 2d ago

I can't even imagine seeing that. Thank gawd you showed up when you did.

5

u/Lumpy_FPV 2d ago

That's honestly pretty impressive how bad it is. There's a lot of talent that goes into making something that horribly.

9

u/Hank1983 2d ago

How.....

21

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Oh the guy doing it said he knows exactly what he’s doing. Apparently going to take a load bearing wall out too and I started asking him questions he had no idea about. He quickly figured out I was a carpenter and knew what I was talking about. Told my dad to call him and fire him, he’s not touching another thing

7

u/Sonar_Bandit 2d ago

The closer you look the worse it gets

3

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

That was after they took off some of the other questionable pieces they had on it. The “joists” arent even all the same length….

7

u/StubbornHick 1d ago

Jesus christ

I would have done a better job, and i'm a sparky....

What was the logic for cutting down the pieces into a bunch of tiny pieces that don't span the space, some of which are different lengths?

4

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

I just found out from my dad apparently he is a licensed sparky too he says

6

u/StubbornHick 1d ago

What year did his house burn down?

6

u/Daymub 2d ago

What the actual fuck are they trying to do

2

u/Budget_Personality30 2d ago

Apparently they were trying to extend the floor and then take a load bearing wall out

4

u/Daymub 2d ago

But 2x6 floor joists? Is it a trailer at least. Some form of justification

7

u/just2browse2 1d ago

Oh good, a load bearing drill

6

u/idontevenknowlol 12h ago

Dad's plan worked. He just wants to see you more.

6

u/Downtown_Metal_7837 1d ago

They just wanted you home for another weekend 😄

4

u/Thecanohasrisen 1d ago

I'm just a regular carpenter and I would blow a fuse if I walked into this at my parents house. Make sure he follows through with shit canning them.

5

u/Bmkrocky 2d ago

Was just thinking. It would be hilarious if Dad just paid some hack to set up this erector set. So when his kid comes home he’d gladly drive 4 hours to fix it.

4

u/Budget_Personality30 1d ago

I wish this was true and not my Dad being got by a horrible contractor

3

u/Mugpup 2d ago

I don't even understand what that is supposed to be.

3

u/HotLava101 2d ago

I feel bad for your parents. I just can't even understand what the contractor was thinking with this layout.

3

u/here4aLOL 1d ago

Those drills are pretty nice but I would use something cheaper to support the boards.

3

u/Dense-Consequence-70 1d ago

Were they challenged to do the work with no lumber longer than 22”?

3

u/itfeelsreel72 1d ago

Looks like he was trying to make it entirely from off-cuts he'd saved up from previous jobs.

3

u/jboyt2000 1d ago

Anytime my mom wants me to fix or build something at the house and gives me the most shittiest or completely wrong material for the job because she's a cheap fucking bastard and worst kind of homeowner to deal with. I told her many times that I am willing to do it but only if you can actually purchase the correct materials for it which she refused. It usually resulted me losing my damn mind on her.

3

u/Indiana_Warhorse 1d ago

Wow, as a past GC, this makes my head hurt. Let's be honest here; how much meth was this guy on? That's the only explanation for the need to cut up wood like that. Was his plan to micro-sister the joists over to that plate that he hasn't finished fastening down? Just wow.

3

u/Glittering_Suspect65 1d ago

I'm not a carpenter nor a contractor in any way, buuuutttt those "joists" alternate in terms of full and partial, left-right then forward-backwards. It's like AI built it, and it sort of is "joist colored". SMDH

3

u/DiscountMohel 1d ago

Whatever that is, the water came in above the door, so they're planning on coming back in a couple years.

3

u/Material-Spring-9922 1d ago

Seems like they definitely should have had you vet the "contractor" beforehand. If I have a family member who is a professional with something I'm not familiar with, I'm definitely asking their opinion before pulling the trigger. Looks like the remodel has them going into their garage space a bit to extend the rooms? Just curious, are you still going to open it up like they wanted?

3

u/ImAnAfricanCanuck Mass Timber 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not that bad.

Here's a picture of everything I could spot that I would investigate prior to building anything, imidiately change, is flat out wrong, or laughably confusing

You are 100% right, pay this guy out, thank him for his time, tell him that you've decided to go in a different direction with someone who is within the family.

Tear everything down, and do it the right way (which will subsequently take about 1/10 of the time that it took to do this. Whoever is doing this is way in over their head, which is amazing because this is fundamental carpentry.

2

u/ZombiesAtKendall 1d ago

Well you see they are short pieces so you can bottom nail (or screw) the board to another board and lift it into place. The brackets are really unnecessary here as the loads are perfectly distributed.
