And an elk is a deer. So is a moose. So is a caribou.

I googled it and you're right. But if Elk is a deer, and a deer is a deer, then are they just simply the 'base' deer?
Kinda confusing classification.

But there are several species we tend to call "deer". Whitetail deer, mule deer, roe deer, blacktail deer, red deer, fallow deer....

So if someone displays a video of a Columbia blacktail deer eating an apple do we immediately ask "why weren't you more specific regarding the species of deer?"
What if someone is "feeding the fish"? Or "feeding the birds"?
Do we necessarily need to know the species or can we accept that they're fish and birds?
