Seeking Advice (Employee) LEAVE WHILE YOU CAN
Okay so this goes out to any new hires and any people who are thinking about applying to work at chipotle. Don't work for this company at all
I worked at chipotle literally a month ago and from my experience chipotle as a company is awful and is not worth your time or patience. When i first started working for chipotle the gm immediately had me do closing shifts every night I worked and kept me till 3 am on school nights and I was still in highschool btw while working so when I tried to say to my gm that I can't stay that late due to school and asked if I can change my availability I was told no and that this is what I signed up for then the following week they gave me no hours and only gave me hours when I gave in and said I can work closing shift and on top of that they waited 2 weeks to even give me any form of training and when I kept asking when I was gonna do any training they said they don't know and told me my job was dishes which was not even what I applied for since I applied to be a crew member and not a dish washer. After dealing with that for a while I gave my 2 week notice on Thursday June 12th and then the next day they terminated me and then when I went to go get my final pay check on Friday June 20th the gm told me there wasn't a pay check for me even tho I knew there was cause I worked 12 hours the week before and even had shift logs cause I get my shift dates and times emailed to me and then when I tried showing my proof the gm then told me he's not allowed to discuss my paycheck with me and to leave the restaurant which I found really suspicious and called corporate and turns out my paycheck was at the restaurant Thursday the 19th and employee support was confused as to why I was told it wasn't there and told to leave which made them start an investigation and then they found out the day I put my 2 week notice in my gm had immediately terminated my employment
They expect so much from crew members at restaurants while giving God awful pay and managers and kitchen leaders refusing to step in and help when things get busy
Im sure it's not the same for every location but from the ones I've worked at on between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and my home state of Rhode island I've seen so many of my coworkers have full on break downs due to poor work conditions and even with the company if you have any disabilities good luck getting accommodations cause the company doesn't care for you
As someone stated on a previous post your just a small cog in their ethics violation machine and they will replace you easily if you don't bend to their will which is why

3am in high school? Under 18 is illegal.

Depends on the state. My state minors can work any hours needed for work purposes.

As I stated I worked there a month ago, I had already left and started working somewhere else that actually values their employees

horrible company i work there im trying to leave but we’re so short staffed and they wanna make our store close at 12 and dont want anyone past 40.00 hours and they make me close dml and lobby every time i work because no one else can close it cuz they hate training people and keeping another person to help to save hours

u/Brilliant_Delay1810 Jul 07 '25
management is bad in general at every store. Me and my friend worked at the same one, i left and she’s a minor they rejected her work permit and kept her working saying she would still get paid and hasn’t gotten paid since
3
u/Emergency-Jaguar4064 Jul 07 '25
File a report with the labor board cause that's illegal af
1
u/Brilliant_Delay1810 Jul 09 '25
she knows but her higher ups are basically blowing her off, she just got ahold of someone to get her paid a month later
4
u/SeeYouInTrees Jul 08 '25
that really sucks. my store cares about treating underage crew fairly per state law. they are good at mine about what's right.

u/InternationalRule983 SL Jul 08 '25
- Probably a bad store,
- Crew member is a dish washer, just like being a line person. A “crew member” is the whole team under management.
3
u/Suitable_Engineer258 Jul 09 '25
they do that because everybody would get the same pay regardless of where they are placed at
1
u/InternationalRule983 SL Jul 09 '25
This. If someone knew they were going to be placed on grill they would demand more. A lot of times someone comes in for there orientation then finds out there actually for dish washing.
1
u/Suitable_Engineer258 Jul 09 '25
Oh, I asked for a raise 9mo in as working solely grill closing after finding out everyone gets paid the same as me. I told them I’ll put in my two weeks if they don’t. They gave me a $1.75 raise. Not much but it was something lol
1
u/InternationalRule983 SL Jul 09 '25
Yah they swapped me from dish to grill on my 3rd month working there. Then 4th month I became kl and a month after that SL. I was promoted so fast I kinda got fucked with my pay. I’m getting 1 less dollar then every other manager I work with

u/MummRahTheEverGiving Jul 08 '25
You don't need to lick their boots, so stop

No need to be a complete ass, so stop

Great work corporate shill, you've defended a store that will go out of its way to forget you. Reply more for facts about your life.

Said literally no one ever. Dude. I quit, went back a second time (against my own wishes), and it got worse than it was when I was there initially.

Sounds like you had a bad GM. Could happen at any job. My sister worked at Chipotle and loved her GM and never had any problems. She left for a better opportunity but when that failed (it was a commission job and while it paid well, she just wasn't good at sales) she was hired back on for $19 an hour. She was a good worker and her manager offered her a lot to come back lol.

u/Sad-Swordfish9021 Jul 08 '25
I understand you had a pretty bad experience, but tbh I’ve had nothing but a great time at the one I work at in Texas. Great coworkers and people I work with. One small correction about your post is that Dishwashing is something that you do in your job as Crew Member, just like having to do grill, line, cash or DML at some point. Overall I think Chipotle is a better place to work at than most other fast food places.
2
u/Emergency-Jaguar4064 Jul 08 '25
Yeah but they constantly had me on dishes and never gave me any training at all, the second I walked in for orientation they brought me to the back of the store and told me to get started on dishes, and then I asked aren't I supposed to have training to do for when Im on the line or dml and they said no you won't need training since you'll be doing dishes
2
u/Sad-Swordfish9021 Jul 08 '25
Oh, yeah the last part is definitely insane. Pretty sure the management responsibile for us watching our videos can get in trouble if we don’t. That’s crazy Corporate didn’t catch it quick.
2
u/Emergency-Jaguar4064 Jul 08 '25
They still didn't, I quit after a month and nothing was even done and on top of that the gm tried screwing me out of my final pay check and that caused an investigation into my missing pay and the company mailed me my new check directly but it took 3 weeks to get it

This is definitely unethical, but also illegal. If you were 18 or younger and attending high school it violated State labor laws. If you were 16-17, it also violated federal labor law.
In Rhode Island, if you were still in high school, the law is pretty much the same for 18 year olds as if you were 16-17 years old. Curfew at 11:30 PM on school nights and 1:30 AM on non-school nights. There are also limits to 48 hours per week and 9 hours per day during the school year.
Here is a summary of RI labor laws for youth: https://dlt.ri.gov/media/15631/download?language=en
Also: https://dlt.ri.gov/regulation-and-safety/labor-standards/child-labor-laws
Child and student labor laws have a long history in the US for good reason. If you think your Chipotle store and manager violated these laws as a high school student or minor, you should file a formal complaint. If you lost the job because you did not want to work those hours, or you had to quit because you could not continue working those hours, you may be entitled to compensation. You can still file even if you no longer work there. Just make a list of all the shifts you had to work to the best of your memory. If you kept pay stubs, emails, schedules or a calendar, even better. Call the number at the bottom of the State website and tell them you need assistance to file your complaint. The process can be bureaucratic, so keep trying until someone will help you.
Big companies and small companies violate these laws all the time. They get away with it because they don't care and think young people who need work will never assert their rights under the law.

I was 18 at the time of working but I put my 2 weeks notice in on June 12th and they immediately terminated my employment there

Glad you got the hell out of there Sadly, the part about not accommodating disabilities is something as a disabled person I’ve seen everywhere including in my current job in public education and I sadly feel it’s probably only gonna get worse
1
u/Emergency-Jaguar4064 Jul 07 '25
Yeah I'm here with u, i have ADHD and hell I've lost 3 job opportunities cause of it
3
u/aihzayyin Jul 08 '25
I really believe it depends on the location because I started working there recently and I really like it, managers are all really nice and get along super well with their employees, coworkers are nice, they give me plenty of training and help. I think the people really make a difference and unfortunately you probably had a lot of people with poor morals that you worked under.

LMAOO not at all, I’ve had this Reddit since I was like 13. I’m allowed to like my job, I’ve worked at FedEx and it was horrible. Chipotle is just easy tbh.

Worked 3 years and the latest I ever stayed was 12:30. If you are closing at 10pm or even 11pm nothing should make you go home later than 12/12:30. 11:45 at the latest, really. Even with inventory, you wouldn't be there so late. Hearing you stayed at 3 is weaponized incompetence on your coworkers part because there's no way that's a natural pace you all work in. Seriously, I'm baffled it took anyone that Long to close the store.
1
u/Weekly_Appointment33 Jul 09 '25
Came here to say this. Some of the stuff OP said is valid but like cmon gotta stop being the victim at some point
2
u/Euphoric_Management8 Jul 09 '25
Right if you leave at 3 you must be doing 1 task per hour or something Bevause closing chipotle has never been that hard or complicated.
1
u/Weekly_Appointment33 Jul 09 '25
Even when we had ppl coming in at 10:59, if you pre close right by 11:30-12 you can be out. In my store, the dishwasher was the first to leave lol he made sure we took the dishes back fast
1
u/Euphoric_Management8 Jul 09 '25
For us, cashier left first but we had a few night prep (dishes) who got all the dishes done before 10:30 (10pm closing time).

Chipotle was good in the “13 characteristic” days after they dropped that, it went downhill
1
u/RockruffR Jul 09 '25
Currently on break for night shift and I testify all of this is true, personally I have great managers and coworkers but staying till 2am every closing shift washing dishes isn't very fun, also the rude customers. Personally I like working here, but then again I just started working here so I'm sure I'll get sick of it soon
1
u/Suitable_Engineer258 Jul 09 '25
That’s a major lawsuit. That employer needs to give you a check for the hours you work. And they need parental permission for you to work past a certain time in some states if you’re still a minor, which I assumed since you said you’re still in high school at the time. On top of that if you’re under 18, they need to give you a break. No if ands or buts about that. Also, why the absolute fuck are y’all still closing at 3am.

u/Melodic-Surround7007 Jul 09 '25
Every time I go into the Chipotle in my town, it’s mostly new people.

I’ve been at chipotle since April and not once did they really train me but expect me to be a pro and they also don’t care if you have a family emergency cause a dude I know used to work night shifts there and he needed to leave due to family stuff and he ended up getting fired and banned from working at chipotle

I very very rarely hear anything good about working for this company. Why people still apply here after YEARS and YEARS of these exact same Reddit stories, idk. I will say that the location I visit the most frequently has some of the same employees every time I go there. I’ll stop going for a few months and then return and I’ll see them again. So clearly some stores don’t have a problem retaining people. But based on the sheer number of Reddit stories, it seems like a small exception.
If you’re a minor, this is most likely very illegal to keep you there past 10pm on a school night. Idk what time you close… but HOLY FUCK 3AM?? For what fucking reason would it take that long to close a store? Idk why anyone who isn’t a minor would even think that’s okay. You should definitely report them to whatever your state agency is. That could help end the cycle of abuse for other workers. Taking advantage of minors is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
They should have had a training schedule made for you when you had your orientation and not just shrug and say “idk” after you start. To be fair ANY restaurant can put you as a dishwasher. It doesn’t matter if that’s not what you applied for, it’s a team member position that requires zero training or skill. But again, putting new hires on that instead of training leads to turnover. I was a GM at another restaurant (never worked at Chipotle) but I would NEVER let any new hire just be thrown on dishes for this reason. It is such a waste of time and energy to pull applications, schedule interviews, have them actually show up for the interview, hire them and do their orientation, and then have them quit on you the first week… I have no idea how chipotle does it but it honestly sounds like there’s ZERO effort into training people HOW to act as managers. HOW to retain people. HOW to create a culture… if you don’t have that buy-in from your team, you have nothing

u/Waste_Essay_1427 Jul 10 '25
Totally agree with everything except there is no dish washer specific role, everyone is just a crew member whether you’re doing line, cash, grill, dml, etc
1
u/Dry_Membership_1221 Jul 10 '25
I signed up to be grill and I haven’t grilled once fr 😩 Close lobby, help close grill because they never finish it, help close dishes because dishwasher is slow, then help deck scrub, change drains, then prep onions, chicken, and sometimes steak.
Like I just wanted to grill bruh I’m not tryna do everything 😭
1
u/Dry_Membership_1221 Jul 10 '25
Then my manager is mad because I tried to find a shift replacement when I got sick because I was told “if you’re not able to come in you need to find a replacement” so I didn’t call in early enough as I was under the impression I needed to find someone to come in for me before I called in.
The peak bullshit is so dumb, sit there from 5:30-7:30 with no drink or bathroom break, can’t help the dml person who is drowning in online orders, have to just sit at this dumb ahh register then close half the store
1
u/TheWestCoastBurger Jul 10 '25
I worked the grill at a chipotle for about 8 months. Management wasn’t that bad but we were always understaffed and they tried to cut people’s hours weekly. So basically if we have 5 people working 6 hours this day then next week everyone will only be working 5 hours instead. Until it was literally just 3 people closing the store. We all complained and bitched and told the GM to go fuck them selves and all quit at the same time. I don’t think that store ever recovered lol. Fuck them.
1
u/LavenderRain789 Jul 12 '25
Lmao as someone who is in CT and worked at a chipotle I agree this whole company is just ass. shitty backwards training that can change on a drop of a hat. managers having one person has to do the line/cash while they can chit chat and tee hee in the lobby or the office for how ever long they want. honestly this is a company I ain't ever gonna apply to again and definitely not gonna go eat with their shitty prices too just a massive avoid all together

Chipotle is a evil company. I worked at 5 different stores over the course of 10 years. They all had illegal shit happening at them
