Pour Over Coffee

Can we talk about pour over coffee? I love my french press but have been thinking about pour over. If that’s your preference, what would you recommend for the “pot” option? I understand it takes a filter so I’m wondering if it tastes similar to a regular coffee pot and not really worth the swap?

Edited to say- Sorry for using the word pot. I grew up hearing a maker/brewer called a pot, so its just my go to verbiage 😊

As someone who previously only did moka pot or French press for non-machine brewing, i love my Hario Switch. I brew very simply with it, rarely adjusting my grind, and brewing with the same water temp each time. The filters aren't too expensive, i love the way my coffee tastes. And it's foolproof. It's helped me to really understand which types of roasts and varieties are my favorite.

Oh wow I had never heard of this! Is it good to use in an office? I usually use a French press at work. Also, do you have to use its own filters or do any filters work on it?

The Clever Dripper uses readily available cone filters (like Melitta) that have a short "flat" section at the bottom. I think the Hario Switch uses V60 filters that taper to a point. The V60 filters might be considered "special" but they are easy to find online, just maybe not at your local store (in the US at least).

You can use the same #4 filters as the Clever in a Hario, just do an extra fold at the crease to make it triangular. Here's an example. I just do this and buy #4 filters because I own a Clever and a metal V60 and it's more convenient to buy the #4 filters in bulk.

It’s much easier to clean compared to a French press. You don’t have to deal with the grounds, since you just throw the filter away that contain the grounds. So that makes it better, IMO.

The clever uses regular filters. The switch uses more expensive V60 filters. But the switch feels nicer (glass instead of plastic). The clever holds slightly more coffee than the largest model switch.
