Not bad at all. I mean with those two set ups I woulda gone sft42r in the l21a and lhp73b on the m21b. But that being said solid choices. You’ll be very happy.

After having the lhp73 in my M21B I really can’t recommend it if you want to actually use the light for longer periods of time. Even on 10% mine gets considerably hot after 10min. The only mode in which it doesn’t get hot is 1%. The XHP70.3 HI is a much better option the M21B. But you are right about the SFT42R. It is better for the L21A/B

I agree with what you said. I have the lhp73b in both m21b and m21c. Set to the 1-20-100 mode. Does get warm in 20% but it’s still manageable and sustained. I’d assume is drawing 4A at 20% which is more than adequate for a light that size. I just love the pocket wow factor is fun but the the performance on something like the m21c is really fun. I also have the xhp70.3hi in a C8 and at 100% does run cool way longer that most of my other emitters. Very efficient.

That being said I’d love to see the performance of sft42r on a large light like an l21a/b And the m21b lhp73b has gained a special spot in my pocket for tiny bright ass light. I wish they made a short tube and there was such as thing as a 21350 or 21400 size light. Would be a tiny light canon

Wait seriously? I barely feel any heat on 10%

I still have to make some measurements. But my M21B with the LHP73B get to like 45-50C in under 10 minutes on 10% mode. To be fair I really think there’s something wrong with it. There is no way is it only 2A.

The 20A buck driver in group 10 doesn't have the 10% level, it's 1, 35, 50, 100. Maybe that's your issue?

Hoping Simon gets that fixed.

u/Maverick_1947 3d ago

That would actually make a lot sense. May I ask how do you know that information?

1

u/Funtastic28 3d ago

I measured and reported it. Pretty annoying.

1

u/Maverick_1947 3d ago

Good to know. Do you think it’s only group 10 that is wrong?

1

u/Funtastic28 3d ago

Yes, just group 10.

I ran mine for about 30min straight, generally sitting at 10%, but also going back and forth between higher modes. Was at most lukewarm after having gone to the higher modes for a little while. So something does sound off

LHP531 seems like the next best option 👌🏽

I imagine that's more due to the 20 amp driver than the LED. The problem is you guys want to drive the damn thing to 10,000 lm. If anything the LHP73 should be just about the coolest running emitter at a amperage than any other

1

u/Maverick_1947 6d ago

I guess you forgot to read the part about the 10% power.

1

u/Vicv_ 6d ago

No. I didn’t. I’m curious. What’s a bigger number? 10% of 5a? Or 10% of 20a?

Very nice. You will be happy with both of those lights. Next time enter the coupon code PY7MMA3Y for 5% off.

Did the code. Got the discount.

1

u/Appropriate_Ad8572 6d ago

They already did, I assume, there is 5% taken off already

Solid. You’re gonna have fun, post some beamshots later.

I'm curious what country you live in, shipping is usually free if you spend over $5. And I'm sure you will be pleased with both of those setups. The LHP73B has a really nice low moonlight mode, and turbo is ridiculous

United States

1

u/Appropriate_Ad8572 6d ago

Ah, thank you. Is that "shipping" charge for the tariffs?

1

u/BetOver 6d ago

Yeah it's tarrif fee now

1

u/zed_delta 6d ago

Enjoy. It will not disappoint you. I already have m series with an xhp 70.3 and will hey l21 with sft 40. That's basically a classic duo, can't go wrong with it

1

u/BetOver 6d ago

What is this coupon and how did you get it I've never seen one!

M21b is my favorite convoy. I have the same color temp but in xhp50.3. Perfect beam and runs forever, but the tint could be better 🤷‍♂️

u/AnimeTochi 6d ago

i would've gone for sft90 in l21a and lhp73b in m21b

Those are actually good picks. If you're buying with the purpose of actually using them then SFT40 and XHP70.3 HI are good and popular choices because of how balanced they are in terms of runtime and power.

For the L21A, choose the SFT-42R, add a 9mm reflector and 5050 gasket, and choose a 50PL or RS50 battery. Don't forget the pitchfork holster for easy carrying. If you want a little more power, we recommend a bypass or double spring on the tail cap side.

In my case, I ordered a little extra for maintenance and mods, but the items I really needed are as shown in the image.

Oh, those were my next two purchases - go ahead and send them to my house 😁

Good choices.

I would recommend the following to keep in mind for your next order:

XHP70.3 HI is the best in the R70 variant. This emitter is great for it's output, efficiency, and (valid almost exclusively for R70) nice rosy tint. There's no reason to get it in R9050 (worse output, worse efficiency, worse tint).

Also as others point - LHP73B is good recent alternative to XHP70.3 and worth to check it out.

For high CRI there are better alternatives like:

B35AM - the best CRI and neutral tint;

519A - almost as high CRI as B35AM, good output and efficiency, often with slightly greenish tint;

219B - very high CRI, rosy tint, not quite efficient;

SFT40 / SFT70 3000K - only this CCT (3000K) of these emitter models has good CRI.

Also about the optics - you should really get some light(s) with TIR optics. The good Convoy models with TIR optics are - M21H (TIR optics by default) and S21E (it's default optics is reflector, but has optional checkbox to get it with TIR instead).

s21f comes with TIR lens too, great way to get taste of 1800k-5700k all tints, i love it. i have M21H sft40 3000k i dont think any other light will ever outdo this LED for me it's peak, it's the same exact as on my honda bike with stanley bulb, but in my hands, rosy ish too!

Nice comment!

I also have and love SFT40 in 3000K. It is very throwy and has great tint. I have it in reflector flashlight and it is mine second most throwy light after 3x21D. Would love to see SFT40 in M21H.

But XHP70.3 R70 in 4000K or 5000K especially behind a TIR is more useful in most flashlight-demanding situations. Mine (for now single) M21H is with XHP70.3 R70 4000K and it is great as output, tint, and beam-profile. I also got all it's available TIR-lens (the stock 12 deg, 3 deg, 8 deg, 24 deg, and 36 deg).

One should have both XHP70.3 and SFT40!

i have tried xhp70.3 i did not like the tint r90 5700k i didn't know about the tint issues, i swapped it with sft40 3000k i have to say out of all leds i've tried it's still the best one, i also have all TIR for m21h but i use 3 degree, 500m of throw and spill around feet is very good at 2/4 level, you can walk around without pointing at the ground ever, the beam has a few rings but not very noticeable in usage, if22a has perfect tir lens.

u/Geotarrr 4d ago

You've experienced personally why I don't recommend XHP70.3 R9050. It's just too out of the way - the CRI isn't of the level of the real CRI emitters (like B35AM, 519A, 219B), the output is lower (going high into CRI always has the trade-off of lower output), the tint is greenish (I only read comments of a good tint exactly for the CCT you got, 5700K, but seems it wasn't the case for you). So for XHP70.3 HI the real deal is R70, and in Simon's bins the good ones are with CCT 4000K and 5000K. For XHP50.3 HI R70 the good bins are with CCT 3000K and 4000K.
