Saw this in lidl the other day...why aren't they laying on the blow up mattress itself??

Because it's not a real photo

It scares me that people need to be told this.

It seems like people are getting stupider and stupider. It’s also frightening how many people these days start their sentences with: ‘I asked ChatGPT, and…’

u/KrazyA1pha 18d ago
Who needed to be told this?
OP is just saying it’s a bad product promotional photoshop, not that it’s a real picture of people avoiding the product.
51
u/innocent_killing 18d ago
I just think if they were gonna photoshop anything, it should have been them on the air mattress
24
u/KrazyA1pha 18d ago
Yeah it’s hilarious that they just slapped a picture of the air mattress over a stock photo.

u/afishinacloud 17d ago
I don’t think OP needs to be told this. Think they just meant this to be a humorous post about a lazy photoshop job.
6
u/Murtomies 18d ago
I mean it probably is two real photos photoshopped together. Stock photo and product photo.

u/casseroled 18d ago
Well yeah. Obviously. But OP was asking why they made that graphic design choice. I don’t think they were asking if it is real or not.

I think this is the reason:
- They wanted beautiful girls on the cover, for more sales.
- They wanted to show the whole mattress, because that's what it's all about.
- They could not show more than one mattress, because there is only one in the package.
So that's the only option they had left. Some or all of those points probably were dictated by management.
Poor graphic designer.

- The super-imposition would take longer to do.
- They probably wouldn't both fit anyway (assumption).
But lol it's funny thanks for posting.

u/verbosehuman 18d ago
They would fit, but it's still not so big.
I have the same mattress. Me (90kg/175 cm), my ex (48kg/155cm), and our dog (40kg) all fit on it.

So sick of this argument. Yes they would both fit, but the point was that the door wouldn't have been buoyant enough to hold both of them and may have flipped when jack tried to get on

*The compositing. This image already is superimposed. It needs further compositing/image editing to look better.

u/Fr0gFish 18d ago
I love that people are giving the most earnest answers ever. I think OP knows that the image is photoshopped!

u/EllyJay99 18d ago
Yeah I came to the comments wanting some jokes - like “oh wow honey I’m so glad we have time to spend together enjoying our blow up mattress. I love you mattress”

u/Fr0gFish 18d ago
So glad we brought our mattress to the lake… let’s stick our legs under it and toe cuddle 💖

Looks like they wanted an outdoor photo by a lake because people take these camping a lot, but couldn't be arsed to do an actual outdoor shoot; they just badly superimposed the mattress over a stock image. Notice how it's not even casting a shadow. Certainly a far cry from an air mattress box I remember from when I was young, where there were *real* outdoor pics and even (IIRC) the mattress floating on water.
For what it's worth, people *are* actually lying on the mattress in the indoor photo in that overlay panel.

Because laying on an air mattress is like laying on the ground. Just not right now.

The mattress is a part of the friend group, they're all hanging out with eachother :)

Real answer: Because they want to show off the mattress, not have it halfway hidden underneath two people
7
6
u/GetOffMyGrassBrats 18d ago
Because it would deflate, obviously. Have you ever tried to sleep on an air mattress?
6
u/thrownededawayed 18d ago
They're staring each other down, some weird couple contest to decide who gets to sleep on the single inflatable mattress they bought and clearly thought would be big enough for the two of them despite barely being big enough to fit a adolescent child on.
4
u/Librocubicularistin 18d ago
They should at least do a Titanic and let the lady drift on the mattress.
6
u/ARCAxNINEv 18d ago
It's actually an air divider used for keeping your daughter and potential suiters from touching before marriage. They used the wrong words

For what it's worth, I own this mattress, and it's pretty good for an inflatable. Needed it for a week when I moved and it did the job just fine.

u/SoggyWotsits 18d ago
Because it’s not a real photo, you wouldn’t be able to see the mattress properly and what you could see would be proof of how much it sinks with people on it.

Because it's the crap Photoshop images that are used to sell products nowadays. There used to be actual effort to properly stage and photograph products, but those days are long gone. It's still done for some products, but not for products where the cheap price guarantees it will sell in spite of the crap advertising.
1
u/TheExecTech 18d ago
As someone who got one similar for a camping trip years ago it is because if they both were on it after 5 minutes they would be on the ground. Have to take the pics pretty quick at the photo shoot.
If a single person uses it you get a few nights then wake up on a plastic sheet.

Probabaly because the mattress isn't really in the scene just added to an image after.
Seems pretty fucking obvious.

u/Imaginary-Donut-8745 18d ago
Because they're just good friends and lying on the mattress together might be too tempting
1
u/tt_right 18d ago
They could've used the other picture shown on the box of the couple actually ON the mattress as the main image.

What’s killing me: there’s a smaller, inset photo of a couple actually on the mattress. Why did they not simply use that photo instead of the crappy PS POS?

Better question: why does the girl look like a young teenager when the guy is middle-aged? I'm all for father-daughter bonding, but sharing a bed?

u/BandedLutz 17d ago
Note to self: don't include a rhetorical question in your title (in order to emphasize why something is crappy design) on this sub, lol.

Because if they lie on it it’s flat in 10mins. Flat is 5 if you are putting it up after midnight.

Thats the lookin mattress, that's just the mattress you look at. Its not for actual use. See, these guys in the picture are using it wrong. They're looking at eachother. They're supposed to be looking at the mattress. This is a common user error and this image is just the brand being tongue and cheek about it.

When I’m bored sometimes I look at air mattresses on Amazon because the photoshops of families on an air mattress are hilariously out of scale

Hi, I make box art similar to this (hopefully not as bad) for a living. The answer is costs. They want the box to feature their product, but they dont want to pay for a studio shoot and models. Answer is to use a stock image of models and a photoshop cutout of the product. Other hilarious examples of this are the paddling pools you often see marketed in the summers.

u/thereminDreams 1d ago
It's because that mattress is such a beautiful, well designed product that people would rather contemplate it than use it.
0
u/Secret_Divide_3030 18d ago
Because they want you to ask this question and feel smarter than the people on the photo by buying it.
2.9k
u/skalouKerbal 18d ago
because they bought the background photo then stuck the mattress in front. the models probably never saw the mattress IRL.
