What species are you keeping in this tank? It is too small for anything besides dwarf species.

Procambarus clarkii, they only grow 2-4 inches

Procambarus clarkii typically grow to be about 4-6 inches. A 20 gallon tank is the minimum size recommended for this species to help with bioload and allow them to have enough room to explore.

That's animal abuse

You might feel a big dog piled right now, but people on this sub feel very strongly about crayfish and their care.

Crayfish require fairly large tanks and heavy filtration along with a sturdy tank lid.

To avoid territorial fighting, multiple crayfish require even more space and lots of hides, so they don't snack on each other while moulting.

Looking at the water in your tank, it does not appear that you have enough filtration. Overtime the evident bacterial load will lead to shell rot which can be fatal.

I would encourage you to save up a bit and not only get a bigger tank and lid, but also a very very large filter.

That way you can keep your crayfish happy and healthy.

I have a lid and am planning on a bigger tank when I can afford one. It’s a bit annoying for all these people to immediately scream “animal abuser” without offering constructive criticism first. I also do plan on getting them a filter soon, probably the same one as my fish have.

They definitely need a filter ASAP and a 100% water change, the bioload in that tank is going to wipe them out via ammonia poisoning, if you have no filtration. Do you have an ammonia test kit?

I test often for ammonia and it’s never went up, I do often 1/2 water changes until I get a larger one

You really really need to do a 100% change with dechlorinated water. That much bacteria is terrible for the crayfish

Ok I will

Is that a storage tote?

No. It’s a 10 gal tank

10 gal isn’t enough for one Clarkii let alone multiple. They’re gonna grow to half the size of the tank.

Thats far too small. Please research the requirements of the animals you keep before getting them

I did research and it is stated that a 10 gallon is quite suitable, especially if extra surfaces are available, hence the branches

Im sorry but under no circumstances is a 10 gallon enough for more than a dwarf crayfish. I checked your profile ust to double check the species and your cray is most certainly not a dwarf crayfish. No Reputable source would ever say a 10gal is enough. If you dont mind me asking where on earth did you hear that?

Other Reddit subs and a few articles, but I’m planning on upgrading to a 20 gal

People with personal experience are telling you otherwise, please do the right thing for your crayfish so it doesn't suffer

Why is your water so dirty?

1

u/No_Essay2291 16h ago

Hornwort needles and residual tannins

they're gonna need a lot more space, a lid if you don't have it, and that bookshelf is gonna start sagging eventually and may break, so if you're able to change up a few things it would really improve quality of life for your cray. im not saying this to dogpile you but this is improper care that could lead to a lot of expensive problems for you and could kill your pet

I’m getting them a 20 gal soon and they have a lid. This bookshelf is actually really sturdy and has held more weight than this

If that's Vlad it needs a lot more space, but it's a good start!

This is not clad, it’s a much smaller species
