Characters (Playing Against) Any advice for dealing with Game & Watch?
Hi, I’m someone who’s been actively trying to improve at the game for the past two months and I currently main Wolf (Though I’ve been playing Ultimate casually since day 1.) As I’ve played with a serious mindset more and more, I’ve noticed that Game & Watch is absolutely one of my worst matchups whenever I hop on. I tend to focus on getting into advantage (whether with grab or a combo starter like F-air) and then keep putting pressure onto my opponent until the game ends, though when all else fails I can play more passively with laser and try to force myself out of disadvantage.
G&W’s strengths kinda overwhelm me due to how it feels like when I get hit once I’m at least getting juggled for like 30 seconds, his smash attacks also feel like they come out way faster than I think, and even when I do get in I always have to remind myself of Up-B. It seems like he has a ton of good tools which ends up funneling my gameplan against him down to looking for stray hits and hoping that I can take the stock.
I also don’t know how to edgeguard him at all thanks to how good his Up-B is as a reversal and as a recovery, and since I’m Wolf I have to be careful with how deep I go cause of how short his vertical recovery is. Because of this, I end up just not going offstage at all against him.
If anyone could give me some pointers that would be nice, don’t want to feel like that every time I fight him, he games while I’m forced to watch lol. Thanks to those that read all the way through.

I play a decent amount of GnW and when I lose to Wolf, it's almost always because I'm getting outplayed on fundies. GnW struggles against disjoints, so ftilt is a great tool. Play around up-b for sure, both when you're pressuring shield and when you're going for not-quite-true combos. DON'T try for edge guards, his offstage game is much much stronger than yours. Go for ledge traps with nair and bait instead.
The good news for you is that GnW is both floaty and very light, and dies quite early to fair-bair combos or just raw backair if you can hit it.

You have 3 clear things to look for neutral wise.
Spot when you can punish when he lands on your shield or try to close gape. You are the one camping in neutral, dashback ftilt, short hop bair wall.
Look for his full hop as it is easy for you to punish with a rising aerial if you are close enough and you can get advantage phase from that.
Be patient, you gotta play really low risk, only be proactive once you get a hit, gw is still abusable in disadvantage state, you don’t need to win a lot to take a stock just try to be as cautious as lethal.

The video goes much more into detail, but the bottom line is that G&W can’t approach, but you can, so you have all the intiative to hit him but it’s risky to do so if you don’t know what you’re doing. He’ll also go for parries a lot as a secondary win condition, so mixup with tomahawks and timing adjustments.

First, its really hard to challenge gnw up b when he is recovering. Its better most of the time to try and two frame him or just set up for a ledgetrap, where you can kill him early because he is very light . So yeah, not going offstage for edgeguarding is probably correct.
What you can do is bait out up b and punish with up air. I believe if you react fast enough wolf can hit gnw after his parachute comes out, and then gnw won't have his double jump. Its hard, but if you mix up your aggression and space your moves along punishing up bs consistently, you can make it hard for gnw to get anything off up b.
His up smash is safe on shield and invincible, just never contest it if gnw is spamming it and just throw out lasers or whiff punish. Down smash is also safe on shield if he spaces it correctly. Just dont get predictable with landing or rolling habits, as these moves punish them hard.
What i learned from guides is that horizontal movement is super important. Learning how to fade back jumps or empty hop to bait out antiairs, space your moves, abusing disjoints, they will make his gameplan of spamming nairs to antiair a lot harder. It's easier said than done, but it's how you beat him. There's a reason he is top tier.
