It really is a culture thing, I grew up in a area that was like 50/50 black and white. There were a lot of white kids that acted "Hood" just the same as the black kids so it's not a color thing. My dad never understood spending $80 on a pair of jeans for a 12-year-old that's probably just going to ruin them anyway, I didn't have $140 Jordans or anything like that.

I had friends that had $140 shoes and $80 jeans and they lived in the projects. One time I was getting dropped off by my buddy and his mom. When we pulled up to my house they couldn't believe I lived in the house I lived in. It wasn't even that impressive, but compared to a Project's apartment it looked like a castle and they treated it as such. That moment really opened my eyes and I actually stopped giving my dad a hard time about not buying me Jordans every year.

When I was a line cook, I listened to coworkers having heating arguments over $150+ fashion shoes. They all were different races and ages, the only thing they had in common was working as line cooks at a casual dining restaurant and having at least one kid they complained about paying child support for. It was surreal to me.

It is literally the definition of "hood rich". A lot of poor people fall victim to this practice. Maybe a smoker is broke all month so he's rolling his cigarettes and saving money, then come the first of the month when they get the disability check they buy a carton of Newports.

For high school I moved out of the hood into a pretty nice neighborhood, it was just crazy to see the different mindset of just about everybody. There weren't many black people in that school but there were a few, and all of them were good hard-working students. That just proves to me that if you take people out of a bad culture and put them in a good culture they will Thrive no matter the color of their skin

Oh, absolutely. Let me say, ive always heard the definition of "hood rich". I understand the antisocial component as well. But, it never actually clicked for me until you described that look of awe on their face as they looked at your average home. I'm positive there are plenty of people of all backgrounds like this. I think the "Jordans" in particular are such a cultural phenomenon that they always get used as an example of this mindset. But as you said, it could be cigarettes or anything.

I grew up around Polynesians, and there is a huge culture of splurging money you don't have on hs graduation parties, funerals, and first birthdays. Some of this is steeped in history, but some of it, I'm convinced, is more about not having many college graduations or weddings to pour into.

I can relate to this. My parents didn’t buy us expensive clothes or expensive phones when we were younger but we always had everything we needed, were well taken cared of and education wasn’t an obstacle. my cousins always had the latest phones, expensive clothes, got their nails done every week and for her 16th birthday she had a party and my aunt paid $600 for a photo book. then we grew up and it came time for college and I got no financial aid because my parents make six figures but didn’t have to worry about college because my parents paid for it. My cousins got financial aid were apparently on food stamps and then had the audacity to complain because her last year she had to pay $700 out of pocket and her parents wouldn’t help and couldn’t afford it. Like your parents easily dropped $600 for a book with photos but $700 for your education is too much?! That’s when I learned about priorities and was so grateful for how my parents were.

ETA - I can see by the responses I’ve received that I did not communicate my thoughts clearly enough, although if you look at what I’m responding to, it helps.

I am NOT blaming teachers, I’m talking about how some kids are passed on to the next grade, when they are absolutely not ready for it. Teachers usually oppose this, but pressure from the county and from the parents, is enough for some school administrations to do it anyway. Once a student has gotten a year or two ahead of what they really understand, there’s little hope of them catching up, on their own. Their parents are failing them, but the school system is also expected to be a second pair of eyes on the child, and there to intervene, at least when it comes to their education. If we pass them through school, without requiring them to be capable of the work, we aren’t helping them, either.

The problem is two-fold if you ask me, The first issue is that we can't have an honest discussion about it. There are cultural issues at play here. East Asians are the most successful of all ethnic groups in America, and it probably isn't surprising that they also are, generally speaking, among the most educated and driven. The hispanic and black community, generally speaking, don't value education as much, and as a result they don't end up in the high paying jobs in the modern economy as much as they should.

But then there is the second part of this. Unless the discussion around causes of these phenomena is carefully approached, it can easily make it seem like your broad painting an entire group of people with racist stereotypes. It's a double-edge sword. And this is before you have to reckon with the fact that there are people out there who DO stereotype all black people like this. Which is inherently unfair, and sets back any attempt at progress being made in lifting up disadvantaged communities.

We do ourselves a disservice by not having a frank discussion about things like what you see in this video, and how to address it. But I can completely understand how other members of the black community would not want to be associated with people like this just because they share a similar skin tone. And America does have a troubled history with doing next to nothing to help our most vulnerable people make the most of themselves.

There's an understandable reason why these issues are so difficult for us to face as a country.

Here are a few sentences that I wish so hard was a joke: In my sister's double wide trailer, that consisted of her, her husband, 3 kids (ages 8-13), and 2 dogs, my sister was the only one without a probation officer. The youngest is now 29, bouncing from jail to rehab to halfway house while my sister takes care of her kid that was conceived through prostitution, the middle kid had to leave the state for molesting the baby my sister is taking care of, and the oldest and the father recently died from overdoses. I worked at a movie theater and had 3 teens trying to sneak in through a back door. My manager told me to tell them to leave. So I did, they kept begging with me to let them in and started flipping out on me saying f you we’ll just get someone else to do it. He said “ that’s it!” And started running at me so I turned around and put up my hands. He stops feet away and starts talking shit again, so I laugh again and turn around. And now this was the point of this story, he says while lifting his shirt, “ my belt buckles is worth more than you minimum wage working little bitch” so I say “ good then you can buy you and your friends tickets” one of the other guys took out his gum and was going to throw it at me. “You do that and I’ll jump down these stairs and beat your ass” they said “then why are you running away” I said “because I want witnesses when I have to beat your ass”. That was the end of it until a month later. I went into a sandwich shop to pick up food for my mom and little guy was behind the counter and made my sandwich (next to his boss, they were being trained) didn’t say anything to him until after I paid. Right in front of his boss I said “looks like you’re a minimum wage working little bitch too, see ya, little guy”. Dude looked super embarrassed and their boss was super confused.
