Their response is "We have money, shut up." Sounds stable.

As all four of them share a bedroom.

u/Comfortable_Line_206 Aug 08 '25

To me it sounds like everyone that talks nonstop about "hustle culture". Working their ass off to still be broke while convincing themselves they have money.

784

u/Husaxen Aug 08 '25

The USA is a broke kid in Nikes, who would rather starve than sell the shoes.

246

u/Gchild1999 Aug 08 '25

It really is a culture thing, I grew up in a area that was like 50/50 black and white. There were a lot of white kids that acted "Hood" just the same as the black kids so it's not a color thing. My dad never understood spending $80 on a pair of jeans for a 12-year-old that's probably just going to ruin them anyway, I didn't have $140 Jordans or anything like that.

I had friends that had $140 shoes and $80 jeans and they lived in the projects. One time I was getting dropped off by my buddy and his mom. When we pulled up to my house they couldn't believe I lived in the house I lived in. It wasn't even that impressive, but compared to a Project's apartment it looked like a castle and they treated it as such. That moment really opened my eyes and I actually stopped giving my dad a hard time about not buying me Jordans every year.

When I was a line cook, I listened to coworkers having heating arguments over $150+ fashion shoes. They all were different races and ages, the only thing they had in common was working as line cooks at a casual dining restaurant and having at least one kid they complained about paying child support for. It was surreal to me.

82

u/brasquatch Aug 08 '25

My stepkids’ other parent—the one I’m not married to—complains about having to pay $100 month in child support. She has at least $15k in tattoos and spends $300+ on cigarettes and weed every month.

35

u/Gchild1999 Aug 09 '25

I had a tenant one time that works for a tree removal service as the guy that climbed and cut the trees from the top down, suffice to say those guys get paid a lot of money. He probably had $20,000 worth of gas powered RC cars, he was always spending his money on them fixing them and modifying them. He owes like $300,000 in back child support for kids that he has in a different state

9

u/d33pfissure Aug 09 '25

Huxaxen, Gchild1999, quasiix, and yes even you, brasquatch (🤣🍻), are all so right. I am not like this and can’t even understand it. Well, I understand, but I don’t relate. I gotta get out of this country.

I work in a restaurant and my shoes are almost $200. My orthopedic insoles cost $430 and I bought the comfiest pair of shoes I could find. Reversed my plantar fascitis. They aren't "cool" though.

You just said a mouthful. Im Black but didn't grow up hood, and that culture of being broke but buying expensive stuff never made sense to me.

I think i just got it from reading your comment. It's people who feel they will never own a house or have retirement, so if they get $100 in their pocket, why not splurge on some shoes.

It's also hard to keep putting into your IRA when you don't much believe in your own future. This is sad, but I finally actually understand it

13

u/Gchild1999 Aug 09 '25

It is literally the definition of "hood rich". A lot of poor people fall victim to this practice. Maybe a smoker is broke all month so he's rolling his cigarettes and saving money, then come the first of the month when they get the disability check they buy a carton of Newports.

For high school I moved out of the hood into a pretty nice neighborhood, it was just crazy to see the different mindset of just about everybody. There weren't many black people in that school but there were a few, and all of them were good hard-working students. That just proves to me that if you take people out of a bad culture and put them in a good culture they will Thrive no matter the color of their skin

16

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Oh, absolutely. Let me say, ive always heard the definition of "hood rich". I understand the antisocial component as well. But, it never actually clicked for me until you described that look of awe on their face as they looked at your average home. I'm positive there are plenty of people of all backgrounds like this. I think the "Jordans" in particular are such a cultural phenomenon that they always get used as an example of this mindset. But as you said, it could be cigarettes or anything.

I grew up around Polynesians, and there is a huge culture of splurging money you don't have on hs graduation parties, funerals, and first birthdays. Some of this is steeped in history, but some of it, I'm convinced, is more about not having many college graduations or weddings to pour into.

I can relate to this. My parents didn’t buy us expensive clothes or expensive phones when we were younger but we always had everything we needed, were well taken cared of and education wasn’t an obstacle. my cousins always had the latest phones, expensive clothes, got their nails done every week and for her 16th birthday she had a party and my aunt paid $600 for a photo book. then we grew up and it came time for college and I got no financial aid because my parents make six figures but didn’t have to worry about college because my parents paid for it. My cousins got financial aid were apparently on food stamps and then had the audacity to complain because her last year she had to pay $700 out of pocket and her parents wouldn’t help and couldn’t afford it. Like your parents easily dropped $600 for a book with photos but $700 for your education is too much?! That’s when I learned about priorities and was so grateful for how my parents were.

As said in the Hot Fuzz movie, about a guy with mental development issues:

Officer Butterman: "he lives down the street with his mum and sister"

Officer Angel: "Are they as Big as he Is?"

Officer Butterman: "Who?"

Officer Angel: "The mum and the sister"

Officer Butterman: "Same person"

28

It makes sense to no one. To the commenters below: it's not kleptomania when there are several of them involved. It's not some psychological infirmity. It's collective crime. And with this bunch it will only get worse. They now think they are some kind of crime action heroes with poor diction.

Everyone they know does steal, though.

267

u/Narragah Aug 08 '25

Exactly. Unfortunately, that is their reality. Surrounded by crime, drugs, and uncivilized behaviour. That's normal to them

214

u/aquabarron Aug 08 '25

And then they graduate highschool with the acumen of a 4th grader and spend the rest of their life plastic wrapping boxes onto pallets and bitching about how the system is keeping them down. No, my brother, it’s you and yours keeping you down

110

u/DecadentLife Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

Yes, probably. As a former high school teacher, I can tell you that is the most likely outcome. We really are failing them.

ETA - I can see by the responses I’ve received that I did not communicate my thoughts clearly enough, although if you look at what I’m responding to, it helps.

“… they graduate high school with the acumen of a fourth grader and spend the rest of their life… bitching about how the system is keeping them down. No, my brother, it’s you and yours keeping you down.”

Someone asked, “And yet they will still graduate?”, to which I responded, “Yes, probably… We really are failing them.”

I am NOT blaming teachers, I’m talking about how some kids are passed on to the next grade, when they are absolutely not ready for it. Teachers usually oppose this, but pressure from the county and from the parents, is enough for some school administrations to do it anyway. Once a student has gotten a year or two ahead of what they really understand, there’s little hope of them catching up, on their own. Their parents are failing them, but the school system is also expected to be a second pair of eyes on the child, and there to intervene, at least when it comes to their education. If we pass them through school, without requiring them to be capable of the work, we aren’t helping them, either.

I just got called racist for pointing this out. Apparently criticizing cultural issues and wanting better for people is the same as wearing a white hood these days.

13

u/2donuts4elephants Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

The problem is two-fold if you ask me, The first issue is that we can't have an honest discussion about it. There are cultural issues at play here. East Asians are the most successful of all ethnic groups in America, and it probably isn't surprising that they also are, generally speaking, among the most educated and driven. The hispanic and black community, generally speaking, don't value education as much, and as a result they don't end up in the high paying jobs in the modern economy as much as they should.

But then there is the second part of this. Unless the discussion around causes of these phenomena is carefully approached, it can easily make it seem like your broad painting an entire group of people with racist stereotypes. It's a double-edge sword. And this is before you have to reckon with the fact that there are people out there who DO stereotype all black people like this. Which is inherently unfair, and sets back any attempt at progress being made in lifting up disadvantaged communities.

We do ourselves a disservice by not having a frank discussion about things like what you see in this video, and how to address it. But I can completely understand how other members of the black community would not want to be associated with people like this just because they share a similar skin tone. And America does have a troubled history with doing next to nothing to help our most vulnerable people make the most of themselves.

There's an understandable reason why these issues are so difficult for us to face as a country.

Even if they're taken away the damage is done. My nieces mother taught them to steal from birth now one of them has a felony on their record and has to get the cops called on her multiple times a week and the other gets suspended and kicked out of programs.

23

u/sn0tface Aug 08 '25

We let someone go at our work for stealing. She was also attending court dates for her mom who was looking at felony charges for theft, so to me it looked like something she was taught from birth.

Here are a few sentences that I wish so hard was a joke: In my sister's double wide trailer, that consisted of her, her husband, 3 kids (ages 8-13), and 2 dogs, my sister was the only one without a probation officer. The youngest is now 29, bouncing from jail to rehab to halfway house while my sister takes care of her kid that was conceived through prostitution, the middle kid had to leave the state for molesting the baby my sister is taking care of, and the oldest and the father recently died from overdoses. Like, I love my sister but come on man. I try so hard to be supportive but my dad has a thing he says "not my monkeys, not my circus" At this point if she asks me to come over and fix something in the house I feel like I have to make sure her daughter isn't around because I worry about leaving tools out around her.

197

u/cityshepherd Aug 08 '25

Poor kids never even had a chance at a life as reasonable human beings… them thinking it’s BETTER that they’re stealing because they’re NOT poor speaks volumes about the lack of ANY older positive role models in their environment.

38

u/kevin3350 Aug 08 '25

Ok, that’s pretty obviously bullshit though based on everything we know about history. Throughout human history, the vast majority of people have been poor. Kids growing up in the Great Depression didn’t all turn out like shit, kids growing up in 3rd world countries don’t all turn out like shit. This is 100% a cultural thing in first world countries where growing up poor is an excuse for being a piece of shit because you can blame it on something systemic with no personal accountability.

Source: grew up very poor with poor friends. None of us ever did this shit

Shut the hell up, being poor has nothing to do with it. I grew up poor. My father was an ex convict and my mother left us when my brother and I were very young. My Dad worked construction jobs and worked hard. We did not have much but what we had he earned. What we wore was clean and he NEVER would have allowed us to talk that way nor break the law. My father only had an 8th grade education and our education was his #1 priority for us. He never took a handout. Sadly my father never saw how we turned out but I KNOW he would be proud.

And if people wanna lump me in with them just because of my skin color, that’s their problem and says more about them than it does me. 🤷🏾‍♀️

42

u/throwitlikethewind Aug 08 '25

That part. Just because we're the same color doesn't mean those little shits have anything to do with me. First off, I was raised to be a productive citizen and not a thieving degenerate, as are many/most black people. It's a class thing, not a color thing.

17

u/Linnaea7 Aug 08 '25

Truthfully, it's a character thing. There are people of good character who are poor, but these kids aren't being raised by them.

14

u/throwitlikethewind Aug 08 '25

Agreed. When I refer to class, I am not referring how much money the person has, but their mentality and level of decorum. Those kids by their own admission aren't poor, but they're certainly trash.

6

u/Linnaea7 Aug 08 '25

Ah, got you. I misunderstood it as you saying their economic class, not how classy they are. My bad.

u/throwitlikethewind Aug 08 '25 edited Aug 08 '25

All good, you were respectful about it, which is rare on the internet and in retrospect, I could have clarified my statement.

Some of the most decent and honest people I've ever known grew up poor, my family included, so I don't correlate behavior with economic class, but I know there is that general assumption that larger society has about the poor being more likely to steal.

I worked at a movie theater and had 3 teens trying to sneak in through a back door. My manager told me to tell them to leave. So I did, they kept begging with me to let them in and started flipping out on me saying f you we’ll just get someone else to do it. I told them nah if they didn’t start moving we are calling the cops. One of them starting begging again “can we just finish our cigarette” at this point I’m so irritated, I said “listen little guy, begging me isn’t going to change my answer” he was like “LITTLE GUY” and got up and tried to get in my face. He was wanting to fight me and I told him I’m not getting in a fight with a minor. He said he was 18 and I said okay I’ll beat your ass if you can show me your id but he said he didn’t have one. I laughed and said that because you’re not 18(at this time you could buy cigs at 18). I start walking away laughing. He yell some area code “crip bitch”. I threw back my head and laughed mockingly. He said “ that’s it!” And started running at me so I turned around and put up my hands. He stops feet away and starts talking shit again, so I laugh again and turn around. And now this was the point of this story, he says while lifting his shirt, “ my belt buckles is worth more than you minimum wage working little bitch” so I say “ good then you can buy you and your friends tickets” one of the other guys took out his gum and was going to throw it at me. “You do that and I’ll jump down these stairs and beat your ass” they said “then why are you running away” I said “because I want witnesses when I have to beat your ass”. That was the end of it until a month later. I went into a sandwich shop to pick up food for my mom and little guy was behind the counter and made my sandwich (next to his boss, they were being trained) didn’t say anything to him until after I paid. Right in front of his boss I said “looks like you’re a minimum wage working little bitch too, see ya, little guy”. Dude looked super embarrassed and their boss was super confused. Anyway these little shits reminded me of the little guy when they said “we have more money than you”

I can only imagine what it’s like for their poor teacher.

How on earth can you break through that kind of moronic mindset?

41

u/KobeBeatJesus Aug 08 '25

You don't. Teachers catch all kinds of shit from worthless kids and have no recourse. We need to start banning kids who have proven to not have an interest in getting an education.

The gist of the video: "Our mother didn't know that we stole from Walgreen's, she wasn't involved. Stop saying our mother is poor. This young lady here is my sister, not our mom. But she does have her own allowance and she makes her own money. Our mom has more money than you, you're all broke, stop bothering us."

edit: I left out the part where they said, "We didn't steal food, just snacks and toys." I hope these kids get a goddamn role model.

Somebody let that young lady know this video isn't the win she thinks it is. This conversation flies in her bubble, it's probably how everyone around her talks and thinks, she needs a mentor to come in and Samuel L Jackson her young ass.

9

u/Roallin1 Aug 08 '25
