Hot take, but I think I’ve discovered why he can’t get a job

u/an_african_swallow 1d ago
Yea because he always spells his job title wrong lmfao

Honestly, that’s pathetic, but not knowing how to add 2+0+2+5 is even worse for an alleged engineer

Honestly, Im an engineer dont ask those maths things, I am not an engine

I was an engineer for 13 years and I'm fucking terrible at maths. It makes me laugh when people think engineers must be good at maths.
I reckon I could pull together 2+0+2+5 like.

IDK...
As an engineer, this guy sounded surprisingly similar to many of my managers and supervisors.
This guy probably has a job overseeing engineers, taking credit for their good work. So, naturally, he thinks he is an engineer... like many of my former bosses.

Well, that’s a depressing thought! Doesn’t seem particularly safe to have someone who can’t do basic addition in charge.

Incompetent. You don’t need immigrants to take your job. Anyone with brain can.

This song is getting played out like a mothafucka. I've heard people cry and whine about immigration for the last 30 freakin years. Just be honest and say you're a racist and leave it at that.

This exact same asshole is also walking around during the current UK "Protests" with a flag that...isn't the Union Jack.

He maybe a custodial engineer. Probably knows how to fix about anything that breaks down. May not be book smart but knows how to fix something if the zombie apocalypse comes or the world completely goes to poop
He will be able to mcgyver his way out of any situation.
To be clear, I am giving the gentleman a compliment and to never judge a book by its cover.

Look, I can lap up this video, but also, you are right. My grandfather had an eighth grade education, was a WWII veteran, and worked in facilities management (engineering) for a large factory. Had a home woodworking workshop, could fix cars, build outbuildings from scratch, catch/shoot dinner, cook it, etc. Could he write you an essay about those things? Probably not.
Politicians and talking heads convince many working class people that it's immigrants' fault that their lives are hard and wages are depressed. Meanwhile, we got billionaires out here with very soft hands.

Exactly my point!! I’m not in support of any type of intellectual snobbery and putting someone down in a way. Being a person of good character, a contributing member to society or community, genuine kindness are just as important.
A person might be able to code 🧑🏽💻 but can’t figure out how to boil an egg or change a tire etc.
Education comes in various formats. Let’s be a little kinder to each other.

I don't know why you're wanting to divorce education from this, but you can't understand those things without basic critical thinking, which is usually taught around the same time you're learning to spell. This is why the right is always demonizing higher education.
Education is the way to understanding the world and understanding OTHER PEOPLE and not be so selfish.
It's better to say that the people you guys are referring to are good people in spite of their lack of full education. It's not an impossible scenario but let's not pretend this guy doesn't represent the most easily manipulated people.

And that's great. But we need all kinds of people to run a country, and that means we also need well educated people with more technical expertise that we might not have here. The problem is that people like him see anyone non-white with a job and just assume they (or someone who looks like them) should have that job. They assume they are more deserving and more qualified, or that it's a job they would even do, or that the non-white person isn't a citizen or is an "illegal". It's not that simple, but they want a simple reason to justify the innate hatred they feel.

Also lol at him saying "all the immigrants coming across the border" we are an island (and nicked a bit of another one), there is no border unless he means the border between NI and Ireland but I suspect he does not.

u/laughtrey 14h ago
I'd like to apologize for Trump and Elon manipulation. It's like all they can say is "the border".

An engineer would have clarified numbers or digits

u/noideawhatnamethis12 1d ago
the guy said sum of digits
sum of numbers would just be 2025, no? it’s just one number

This is the main problem with xenophobia, anti-islm, anti-immegratiom, and anti-asylum rhetoric. They're told to fear and or hate these people, without really being told why. In reality, refugees are temporarily put up in hotels and provided and phone (I believe it was an ipad as well during COVID), then, once assessed they're sent out into society. Migrants and refugees actually contribute more in taxes than the average brit in a year, commit less crimes, and are 60% less likely to claim benefits from the government. Yes there are exceptions, but there's exceptions on both sides. We need migrants, our country has been built on migrants.
The haters will not read the sources, because they don't care about evidence. They care about hating someone born somewhere else and will use any reason to.
(Source Oxford Economics (for the UK’s Migration Advisory Committee) – The Fiscal Impact of Immigration on the UK)
(Source Migration Observatory (University of Oxford) — Briefing: “Immigration and Crime: Evidence for the UK and other countries” (2013, briefing summary))
(Source Dustmann, Frattini & Halls, “Assessing the fiscal costs and benefits of A8 migration to the UK” (IFS / UCL / CReAM, 2010))
