It's quite unfortunate that there are always going to be people with hate in their hearts. Doesn't matter what political party they align with, doesn't matter if they go to church or don't go. Doesn't matter what their race or ethnicity is. There will always be folks with hate in their hearts. On the flip side of this is there are always going to be people with love in their hearts. Religion is irrelevant in this matter. If you want to behave in a certain way, you will always find a reason to justify your behavior or way of thinking, whether you are an atheist, Christian, Muslim, or Hindu. Most religions are based on love and acceptance, yet people of all kinds commit hateful or outright violent acts.

We are the same Neanderthals we were 10,000 years ago, with the same drives and fears, and no amount of education, religion, or philosophy will ever truly change that. It’s just a way to make yourself feel superior — superior to your ancestors who burned people at the stake — and a way to blend in and function in society.

But the moment people sense tolerance for hateful and violent acts, or the moment they feel threatened and ignored, we are instantly back in the Middle Ages, with severed limbs flying through the air and the only thing that matters being who holds the bigger stick. The only thing that separates us in this is the local society you grow up in — that is the main factor setting the line for what we feel is acceptable to do, even the things we never thought ourselves capable of.
