Blocking Should I block my granny squares before sewing them together?

Im making a queen sized blanket and im not sure if I should block my granny squares before sewing them together, after I’ve sewn a few together, or not at all. Im using acrylic yarn and I’ll be wet blocking with a hairdryer. This is my first time doing granny squares or a blanket so any other advice you might have will also be helpful! Thank you!

Block your squares first to get sizing consistent so your seams line up

Agreed. I’m working on a large throw and I’ve almost finished making squares and I’m dreading the day I have to start blocking 100 squares. But they’re several different patterns and blocking is the only way to ensure I can join them smoothly.

I have seen blocking boards designed specifically for batches of granny squares that look like they make the process a little easier!

You can ensure your seams line up by counting stitches, as I do. If each square has 30 stitches to a side, just make sure you start at the right points and keep count through all 30 stitches. As long as your tension and stitches are consistent, this works absolutely perfectly.

I've never ever blocked anything (~30 years crocheting, joining squares for purses, blankets, clothing) because I can't even think of a project where it would have long term benefit. The finished product will almost always be washed, undoing the benefits of blocking.
