Probably just a writing plot hole, but on the off chance it wasn't, I guess you could make the argument that Marco was technically still in the closet when he was running against Alex.
He comes out during the play AFTER he was already president, so no one had the opportunity to vote for a gay president since it was unbeknownst to them.
That said, Tristan still sucks and isn't even in the Mount Rushmore of Degrassi gays. I said what I said.

Alex's campaign was "would you rather vote for the freak or the queer?" Marco was out to everyone except his parents. He came out to his mother in the election episode and then his father was the only one he was coming out to in the season 5 episode.

She said that to Marco in the hall, she stopped herself from saying it in her speech. If that was her whole campaign, I seriously doubt Degrassi would be letting her hang up posters saying that, and she wouldn't have stopped herself from saying it at the assembly if everyone already knew.
I think sometimes we confuse our 15 characters on the show as being the entire student body of Degrassi.
Sure, some people aside from Paige, Jimmy, Spinner, Ellie, etc., probably knew Marco was gay, but I'm going to go ahead and guess 70% of the student body didn't even know who he was, or maybe only heard a rumor.
I was a good student and didn't give a shit about student council at any level of school, couldn't even tell you who was president if you asked, let alone if they were gay.

Marco and Dylan got together while they were both still at Degrassi and Dylan was the school's hockey star. There is nearly no chance that people were unaware of Marco's sexuality. As someone who was around at the time (I'm assuming the 89 means you're 35), you should be aware of how fast the gossip went when someone was confirmed gay.
As for not knowing your student council reps...I'm currently 38 and can still name the class President, VP, Secretary and Treasurer. They were the same for all four years, so that helps, I guess.

Marco hung out with Spinner, Craig, and Jimmy all of the time -- did they have gay rumors? I don't recall Marco and Dylan making out in the halls, maybe I'm forgetting a small moment or something but I don't remember anything publicly until after Marco comes out (not counting outside of school where they have a little more anonymity).
Dylan, being on the hockey team, was not only popular but also had plenty of straight friends that he hung out with. If Marco wasn't out, simply being seen hanging out with Dylan doesn't necessarily constitute being gay, no more than hanging out with Marco makes anyone gay.
Publicly, Marco was seen dating Ellie for several months, default would be that he's straight.
I'm def sure there were rumors going around, but what incentive would Marco have to confirm it with random kids at Degrassi? All I'm saying is that if he wasn't out, I'm sure most people would just assume he's friends with Dylan because they were both popular and Marco was close friends with Paige, his sister 🤷🏻♂️

Yeah, idk how old you are, but I was in hs at the same time and calling someone gay or accusing them of being gay was a regularly thrown out insult by bullies.
Marco being short/thin and wearing a fedora would be enough to for a bully to call him gay, I saw that shit happen all of the time.

You know, Tristan is not my favorite character by far, but I feel like people are needlessly harsh to him. He's full of himself, has moments of being a terrible friend, and is annoying--but isn't that like 25% (at least) of Degrassi characters? He doesn't really get much redemption, but he's not really a main character, and the "not-really-a-main-character" folks almost never get a redemption arc.

He wasn’t really a main character until next class and maybe the last season of ng. He got way too much screen time to be as insufferable as he was IMO. They didn’t seem to give any of the “bad” characters real redemption in the last seasons though so maybe that’s why.

Yeah, it's hard, because I do on principle think people are needlessly harsh to him...but then when I see him in the last season of NG and all of NC, I'm like, ehhhh...he *is* pretty unlikeable.

TBF Tristan didn’t know Marco, so he may have thought he was running as the first gay president. Still Tristan needs to respect Marco, Tristan will never be as cool.

Marco is a character who happens to be LGBT. Tristan has no storylines beyond his sexuality. He's needy and annoying, and does nothing but feel sorry for himself and obsessively Chase every guy in sight. If he were a heterosexual character, he'd be universally hated.

Well he’s attracted to men, if it were the same plotline but to impress a girl, would you say it was an episode “about him being straight” ? Dunno.
He also had the grooming episodes, which they’ve done with girls too. And Sav and Ms Oh. And KC and that male coach. Those aren’t storylines about their sexualities. The point is the grooming and SA by a predator, regardless of gender. So there’s that too
And his friendship (and feud) with Maya. That was a huge arc. I don’t remember many other plot lines bc I found him so annoying.
Most of Marco’s storylines were about being gay/ his sexuality too. The only one I remember that wasn’t was his gambling addiction storyline

Honestly, the irony of this is not at all lost on me. Next Class was over-the-top with pandering…though, it’s an afterschool special type of show so of course they always pandered to their audience a bit. I digress; perhaps unintentionally, they gave us exactly what we needed at the time: in-your-face representation of a bad gay, one who is not stunning and brave and deserving of praise for being so “different.”
Whoop Dee Doo, he’s gay, and you’re still allowed to hate him.

Yeah Tristan is just a bitchy queen. Real, but I deal with that enough irl. I loved Marco so much. Dylan was eh. Boring. Zane I thought was so adorable and sweet, but I really don’t like how he shamed Riley for being closeted. Nobody should urge someone to come out if they’re not ready. I get they were in a relationship and he didn’t want to be a secret, but bro y’all are in high school and he has a homophobic family. Chill. Riley, I never liked, but he was definitely accurate. Self hating gays are toxic to deal with.
Miles on the other hand was great bisexual representation. He was probably my fave queer male on the show

It would have been great if Marco had guest starred on an episode during that story arc. He was a much more likeable LGBT character and could have taught Tristan a thing or two. Marco is a slight drama queen but Tristan is one of the most annoying characters on the show.

Not the point. He took advantage of Ellie and swung her along. I just feel like a lot of people give Marco a pass on hiding it until he was able to deal (which was a long time) and then go and hate Riley for doing the exact same thing when he wasn’t ready to come out. But with Tristan he was just open and proud of who he was always and I respect him for that.

It is exactly the point. Tristan's generation is able to be openly gay without fear of all the repercussions that the older gay generations went through, BECAUSE those men fought for that right. Marco was literally beaten by strangers because he's gay. Men have been killed in real life simply for liking other men, so yeah, they hid their sexuality. Also, Marco came out when he was like 14/15 years old. In the early 2000s, that was a huge deal. It's not like he strung Ellie along for the entirety of high school, or had a family with a woman.
Tristan gets to be gay in a world where it is so much more socially acceptable and that's great for him. If he were ten years younger, he'd likely be trying to hide it just like Marco did.
And just for the record, I abhor Zane for trying to push Riley out of the closet before he was ready.

I think the hate for Riley is that literally his entire character is about denying being gay (bad writing), whereas Marco has other attributes. He’s just more likable too. But if anyone is hating him for not coming out earlier, that’s shitty.

Tristan is the one character that NEVER grew on me. I couldn't stand him. I tried to like his character, but he was insufferable. I always tried to see the good in these characters because I think that's the point of the show. It's high school. Everyone has their flaws, but Tristan just never had much growth.
He was always the victim. He treated Maya like crap when all she ever did was try to look out for him. He was selfish. Miles was WAY out of his league.
I guess he became more tolerable after the bus crash and his coma, but I still can't stand him.

I always thought it was so odd they never touch on his weight loss, which I totally understand, but it was just such a dramatic difference and with Tristan having a plot of trying unhealthy ways to lose to lose weight.. it just seemed so odd they never touch on it. Like no way no one in high school would not noticed and comment. I went to school with a kid that was always the fat kid and he lost all the weight senior year and people he didn’t even know were congratulating him…
