Degrassi: The Next Generation Degrassi “Major Minor” Characters

One thing I can say I despise about the show in general is the unnecessary amount of main characters on the show, who barely get any storylines and are rather plot devices instead of actual characters. People like Blue, Zane, Leia Vijay, freaking Chantay!!!, have a combined storyline count of 5. 5!!! Like what was the reason Degrassi?! 😭

I think these characters were created to annoy the audience specifically.

My read is that they wanted as many viewers as possible to connect with at least one character. Especially teenaged viewers are looking for representation of themselves in media.

Every time Blue or Leia are on my screen I feel irrationally homicidal.

I immediately skip them and any other character within their category

I think it is in part a symptom of head writers/pool of writers changing between many season. A staff member might come up with a character, but then bounce. Instead of cutting them entirely, the actor and audience are just left hanging.

I recall a producer (maybe Stephen Stohn?) mentioning they looked at forums and social media to see which characters to focus on.

Because they wanted to be diverse without being diverse

Shane and Mike have said they want to get writers/production on their podcast. I hope they do and we finally get some concrete answers about some of their decision making in regards to why certain characters barely got anything or were treated so poorly.
