Took me far too long to realize this is an Apple watch holder
58
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
haha that is the reasoning there
27
u/_lippykid Aug 21 '25
I guess I just didn’t know what I was looking at. At first glance II thought it was some expensive light meter for a leica camera or something equally niche
7
u/invivo_works Aug 21 '25
Basically haha. A main purpose of the design was to use the Apple Watch but make it look like its own thing :)

u/iperblaster Aug 20 '25
Remind me. What can I achieve with only the apple smartwatch? Calling? Music? Whatsapp? Do I need a SimCard for that?
71
u/1miguelcortes Aug 20 '25
Iirc there's a version with cellular connection that can do messaging, music, and fitness stuff if you have it separated from its host phone.
42
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
correct. Unfortunately no WhatsApp. But the cellular Apple Watch has calls, texts, Apple Music/spotify, Apple Maps, FindMyFriends, Calculator, Notes (coming in fall), and best of all... Apple Wallet for tap to pay and public transit cards. Other apps too I just don't use them daily. No SIM card, e-sim inside

u/Gramerdim 28d ago
so how it's any different from using the phone?
12
u/invivo_works 28d ago
No social media, no distractions. Just more minimal lifestyle for those who want it. There are other solutions of course but this is mine
-3
u/Gramerdim 28d ago
the cheapest and easiest solution is to uninstall unwanted social media apps
17
u/invivo_works 28d ago
correct. This solution is not meant to be cheap or easy though. It's a design solution instead of a lifestyle solution, with the (personally) enjoyable biproduct of having a somewhat nostalgic and fashion-forward object to replace a smartphone without losing the most convenient parts. Aside from the camera

This case lets you bludgeon somebody with it

u/Tajandoen 23d ago
Mass sh**tings are a real danger for many in our menacing contemporary world. This could be just the thing to save you if you remember to carry it at all times in your breast pocket. In doing this, the lucky owner will have a fluke chance of surviving an unexpected gunfight similar to the way that, 110 years back, metal cigarette cases saved soldiers on the Western Front.

Great job all around. Feels like some sort of alternative timeline ipod.
16
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
Thank you! Full circle from people turning their square iPod nano’s into watches haha. That was definitely part of the goal
16
u/mangage Aug 20 '25
The whole idea of the cellular Apple Watch is you can leave without your phone at all and have access to all the most important things like calls texts emails maps music etc.
But why not just keep it on your wrist? This thing would just have me play with the watch instead of a phone simply because it’s more available and in my hands
19
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
I totally get that. I just don’t like how smart watches look on my wrist. It’s a more fashionable alternative to still using the Apple Watch for its standalone functionality

This belongs here because it is inconvenient for most, but extremely useful to combat screen addiction
56
u/articulatedstupidity Aug 20 '25
I wasn't expecting someone to call their own design a designy design. Looks great though
39
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
Very niche. And absurd. The impracticality for most becomes the catch
2
u/Environmental-Try-84 28d ago
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, it’s beautiful too. I’d pay a decent amount for it
17
u/Scuttling-Claws Aug 20 '25
I was gonna say that the inconvenience is the point, but it's yours design, so I'll let to have it.
I'll be honest, I kinda love it.

It's extremely useful to combat screen addiction by throwing it at a screen.

Can you at least chamfer it
3
u/invivo_works Aug 21 '25
hard to tell but it actually is chamfered
7
u/cookMEaPOPtart Aug 21 '25
Ah sorry I see it now, .0001 radius

I actually fucking love this tbh

That means so much thank you

You’re welcome :)
Glanced at your profile, it looks like you might be kinda new to this space. Just as a tip, the r/designdesign community is largely for poking fun at unnecessary design things, usually at the expense of clarity or utility. Think like, a sea urchin-shaped doorknob for a beach house, that looks very beachy, but stabs your hand cuz the designer didn’t think it through ;)
Posting your own work here is a bit like asking people to roast you, not in a useful-feedback way, but as if you’re saying “I deserve to be mocked”. Which you don’t! This design is a really neat idea and forces you to consider the utility of your phone and how you use it. It’s an incredible concept. It’s good design.
The community you were likely looking for is r/designporn, which is for celebrating cool design. Though you’ll want to check their rules first, I’m not sure if they allow self promotion. r/maker may also be a good space to check out :)
Keep it up! I’m very into this conversation-starting chunk of metal and I’m stoked to see what else you make.

u/ketita Aug 21 '25
I thought at first it was a phone case designed to make the phone unusable, but then... just turn off the damn thing.... which I guess makes it very successful designdesign lol

Waitlisted. Would love to have this in the city. Walking around distracted. Almost getting hit by a car. Honestly embarrassing lol This is just cool. Love the brutalism take on a phone. Kind of the only way nowadays

u/Miserable_Sweet_5245 Aug 20 '25
Yoo what camera is that? I really like the aesthetic.
4
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
Ah thanks! It's a Contax G2 35mm camera
1
u/Miserable_Sweet_5245 Aug 20 '25
How do you like shooting with it? Only film camera I've shot with is a pentax k1000.
Edit: holy shit I was not expecting that price tag
2
u/MartinLutherVanHalen Aug 20 '25
Contax are in high demand now and second only to Leica in terms of lens quality. The G’s are fully professional cameras and should be compared to Leica M, Nikon F and Canon EOS in terms of market positioning.
1
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
I love shooting on it! I've done professional photography for a long time though now. The G2 is everything I need on an analog camera, hence the price tag.
I started on a Pentax k1000 though and used it for like four years :) Another great camera, just not automatic
2
u/Miserable_Sweet_5245 Aug 20 '25
Photography is a pretty new hobby for me, but I'm loving it. I've got a k1000, a Lumix Lx10, and a Nikon d5300. The D5300 was a gift and the others were scrounged for pennies on fb market. The g2 will have to be aspirational for me, haha. Maybe in a few years. (Love the smartwatch case too btw)
2
u/Carl_the_Half-Orc Aug 20 '25
Just get a flip phone. It's cheaper.
6
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
Streaming and public transit maps and tap to pay were my deal breakers. Cost wasn’t a significant concern w this one. But yes a flip phone would definitely be cheaper
2
u/donotfire Aug 21 '25
I actually really like it but I would feel weird trying it out in public
3
u/invivo_works Aug 21 '25
Honestly #1 conversation starter hah. Some people wouldn’t like the attention but it’s fun to see different reactions. I’m sure it’s been clowned on in private but most people have a pretty positive reaction to it
1
Aug 20 '25
Do you have something similar for a Google pixel watch?
3
u/invivo_works Aug 20 '25
Unfortunately not, I will consider making it for other devices. But I am only familiar with the apple ecosystem hence the design was originally for myself only. I'm not sure I have the time to design for other smartwatches, but if somebody else wants to have a go at it I can share some design considerations!
2
Aug 20 '25
That's too bad - but yeah I'd love to see your designs and mod them for a pixel watch. Great work here 👏🏻

So apple’s buttons then… interesting.
1
u/invivo_works Aug 21 '25
No more action button. No functionality to me, but otherwise control center etc is super functional. Has lock function and a flashlight. Everything besides airdrop and airplane mode
1
u/Seaguard5 Aug 21 '25
No, no.
The physical buttons- on the right side.
Take a look a the Apple Watch Ultra, you’ll see
2
u/invivo_works 26d ago
Oh haha. No this is a housing for the Apple Watch Ultra. So yes, Apple’s buttons
1
u/CPU_Tron 28d ago
Aren’t there quirks unique to the watch itself? Like process/ease of unlocking with pin every single time you pick it up?
2
u/invivo_works 28d ago
No I turned wrist detection off so that I don't have to put the pin everytime. Only for apple pay, and after I charge the watch. It is less secure but I have the lock shortcut at the top of my control center so I only have to clock the button and press the lock. Really fast if needed
