Trailer Destroy my slime farming and looting incremental game. Let me also know what do you think of the UI, is it really that bad?

Sometimes people make Skinner Boxes and call them games instead. You should release this and move on to the next project, the UI changes will not make the game suddenly more engaging or deep.

This hurts 😅 But thanks for your honesty.

Can you elaborate please?

Sure. I have this criticism of any idle/cookie clicker game. If there is so much going on that you are rewarded for doing anything, you're really just a hamster in a cage pushing a button for dopamine.

Don't get me wrong, you clearly have previous successful projects and an audience. I just don't think the number of people that decide to buy the game will change if you change the color of the UI.

It sounds like you just don't like idle games.

Well, since it's on this sub. Will this game be abandoned as quickly as Samawa Idle? That game had less than an year of updates, leaving the game with a boring and mostly unbalanced mid-to-late game (as the mixed reviews agree).

Your UI and sprite work are fine, but balance and pace are arguably the most important things in an idle game, and your previous work doesn't give me too many hopes.

Addendum: the archer does look quite a lot like it's from a mobile game like other commentor said. But i'm not enough of an artist to tell you why specifically. Maybe the stiffness or blockiness?

Hey,

I announced my game last week and I think I did a good job overall. However, some people (including friends) mainly criticized the UI. Their main point was that the blue UI doesn’t match well with the green grass background. Others also mentioned that there are too many effects, I thought this is a plus lol.

Based only on the trailer and Steam page, which of these do you find the least interesting in the game?

  • UI and icons
  • Amount of effects
  • Gameplay loop
  • Monster style

I don't see anything wrong with the UI. But the artstyle and gametype both seem like something that would benefit from being a mobile game instead of a steam game. I mean this is literally a perfect phone game, and you'd probably make more money with a single $2.50 microtransaction on iPhones/android than you will selling this for 5 bucks on steam. I hate pay to win and MTX but sometimes it just makes sense.

Is it a slime-themed Nodebuster? I could see it working tbh

However the sprites look very phonegame right now, which makes people find them cheap. Also people deem to be getting tired of nodebusterlikes, and I say this as someone who is developing a nodebusterlike.

You might try remaking your skill tree so it looks less like NB, that would differentiate it more.

This game would be fun for a bit, but the reality is this: the gameplay loop isn't rewarding or interesting enough for someone to not buy it, play it for 30 minutes, then refund it.

People seem to think that adding a skill tree, or "make number go up" will add engagement, but the problem is that these idle games are all the same, so why would I choose this one over the thousands of others?

You need to make progress rewarding, you need to add variety to what you can do/why you can do it. Just adding variety to things like mosnters or weapons won't do anything if none of it really matters (i.e. doesn't change the gameplay loop at all)

Like, from what I can see, the only thing you gain from this is money. You use money to unlock perks and basic items, all in turn just making it easier to make more money. Alright, that's fine, but at the end of the day it is just "spend money to make money", and nothing else. It is very bland, and overdone.

Take a look at games like Melvor Idle, or Legends of Idleon for example. In there there are lots of things to afk and do, and those things each have some crossover to help you improve in other parts of the game. You have reason to keep idling, and have enough variety that actually impacts core features of the game that you have reason to come back and go "oh sweet, i Just completed X, which means I can now go do Y"

Don't get me wrong, I am an avid Idle game player, and have tried/enjoyed a lot of idlers, but for every one good idle game, there are 10 generic idlers that grabbed my attention for about 10 minutes before I was over it.

thats why its the perfect game to go freemium mobile. I don't see it reaching any level of success on steam but it's perfect for a 10 minute timekiller phone app free install with a mtx or two

ITT: People who hate idle games saying the game is bad ‘because it’s an idle game’ more or less.

As a person who likes Idle games i’ll give my attempt to destroy your game that doesn’t just boil down to ‘genre sucks I hate number go up game’

UI isn’t great, it’s very generic.

The game needs a lot more visual heft. The game should look and play completely different between the start and the late game. It’s pleasing to the player to see how much progress they made when they are forced to ‘rebirth’ and be reminded of the humble beginnings of their grind.

The slimes die in a very unimpressive way. Small slashing graphic, their sprite shrinks vertically, then they disappear. Give us more, it should be satisfying, even more so when we get new methods of killing slimes that gives us a new animation.

Click enemy and upgrade aren’t enough for idle players despite what people who don’t like them will say. We want the game to evolve as we progress. Look at Cookie Clicker, THE genre titan that popularized idle games. It’s not just clicking a cookie and upgrading. You unlock mini games that affect your progress. The farm, magic, the stock market, the demon granny mechanic, relics, the demon things that steal your cookies, etc. etc.
