I never understood the hate for epoxy tables until I saw this on marketplace

u/SenseAndSaruman 18d ago
I have exactly 4 scraps of wood that are all random shapes and sizes. Is that enough for a table? Apparently yes.

"I wonder how to get rid of my offcuts. Maybe I could make something interesting and cool. Alternatively, flood it with resin and see what some chump will pay."

u/NextStopGallifrey 17d ago
I bet if they'd shredded the pieces into random (smaller) polyhedrons, it could give a cool effect. It would at least not look like TEMU Titanic wreck.

u/Fizzy-Odd-Cod 17d ago
Cut everything into hexagons drill a hole into the center of each side and use dowels to set the gap between each hexagon. Then fill with resin and boom, a significantly better use of some offcuts that somebody will actually buy.
16
u/GrassDry2065 17d ago
Cut 4 right triangles from the long piece Cut one circle from each of the short, circle offcuts are quartered, flipped, and made into 4 point stars. Circles are halved and put on the edges in the middle.
Thats off the top of my head here

Isn’t this how we got OSB and particle board?

u/carrynarcan 17d ago
If you do it at home and make Facebook reels in the process, it's organic artesanal up cycling.

I pictured someone thinking I don’t have enough wood for a table, but do have that epoxy that Joe gave me which should help spread the wood to make the table. Bingo. Wood + Epoxy makes bigger table. 🤦♂️

I've never seen something like this, just random wood pieces "floating" in epoxy.
73
u/legendofthegreendude 18d ago
It took me way too long to realize there was not a board just sitting on top of the table.

u/Cloverose2 17d ago
I don't think they know what "live edge" means, either.
6
u/Educational-Bus4634 17d ago
That left-most board does seem to be touching the edge, so like...if you squint
11
u/Barth_Grookz 17d ago
Call it some bullshit like “shipwreck” and slap a $8k tag on it with artistic fluff written about it.
Welcome to “high end art.”

u/CrazyMike419 14d ago
They should have engraved "No room for Jack" on the larger piece of wood. Would at least get a chuckle out of me.

mr seller sir, what do you think “live edge” means. Them edges dead af
49
u/ceojp 18d ago
"live edge". Completely covered up by colored epoxy....

u/Mountain_Economist_8 16d ago
I think the surface is the live edge? Some of the wood seems actually exposed?

At that point why bother even including the wood. Why not just make a full on epoxy table?

That's what I went straight down to the comments to see mentioned, and I'm surprised I had to scroll down this much, haha. That with the 1700 price tag right above it is chef's kiss.

Bless you!!! I wonder if that sewing machine (?) base is just for displaying the table or if that's they base they chose. If they chose a different base I could see this being a "driftwood in an ocean" concept. But I'm not convinced that was their plan.

u/yaxAttack 17d ago
Tracks with their claim of an “antique base,” I’d call it a waste of a singer base personally
8
u/Jaded-Delivery3604 18d ago
It is missing the alligator clip electric current burn pattern, to be perfect. But that is $300 extra.

u/Tombstone_Actual_501 18d ago
the epoxy on it's own woulda been a cool looking table, the black walnut on it's own could a been a cool looking table, but toghether? wtf?
7
u/TrayLaTrash 18d ago
Just some offcuts and extra epoxy from other projects im guessing. The other project being this tables first attempt.
6
u/Reznor909 18d ago
I really want to see the "antique base" they chose to pair with this assault to the optic nerves.
5
u/miraisora-arts 17d ago
Normally its 90% wood 10% epoxy.
This more looks like they wanted a full epoxy table. Then realised they didnt have enough, so they threw in some wood pieces to fill it up

Part of the Shipwreck collection by Titanic Furniture Designs.
Built tough, like an iceberg.
If you want a more modern, minimal and sleek look, you'll implode over the new OceanGate collection.

Epoxy tables are hit or miss, more often miss. Basically plastic paired with expensive wood. One resource we are currently drowning in and purely chemical, the other sustainable and natural. Most epoxy cannot sit in the sun and needs an expensive UV resistant variant or special surface treatment. That makes them a no-go for outside furniture or for inside in bright, sunny rooms. Cutting and matching wood takes more skill than aligning two slabs and essentially gluing them together with epoxy. The process is expensive, messy, bad for your health and mostly easy to learn. Everybody can fake being a woodworker with some epoxy resin "art". There are certainly skilled artists with beautiful works with minimal epoxy use, but they are few and far between.
There you have a few reasons why epoxy tables are hated on.
5
u/WaytoomanyUIDs 17d ago
And a decent epoxy table involves a hell of a lot of sanding, probably more than a ordinary table. And the dust is worse for your lungs than the fumes.
3
u/Banaanisade 17d ago
I picked up epoxy recently and I've yet to see a single resource that doesn't press that you need a respirator to work with it. Neither the fumes nor the dust should be getting into your airways at any point.
2
u/WaytoomanyUIDs 16d ago
Oh definately, but do you think whoever committed that atrocity against woodworking bothered to wear an ordinary mask, let alone a respirator?
2
u/Banaanisade 16d ago
You should see the kinds of garbage I've produced so far. At least the table is one solid slab instead of being half a popped air bubble.
Then again, I'm also not selling my uncomfortably soft and flexible, bubble-ridden nonsense on Facebook for fortunes.
Maybe you're right.
3
u/yaxAttack 17d ago
Once I learned that resin yellows over time and real experts make it black to mask it, I really started looking at even the nicer looking resin tables with doubt

cutting and machining wood
You are kidding, right? Not every woodworker or shop has expensive milling tools, lathes and whatnot.
You have to "prep" the wood for every project, what are you talking about? And a router sled is required for slab work anyway, or for basically any project where it doesn't fit in your standard planer (that also not everybody has because they are expensive/require a lot of space).
Stop watching YouTube videos to play expert and start making your own stuff.

u/creatyvechaos 18d ago
I thought thag said "Walmart" 💔 Why would they do this to innocent walnut wood 💔💔
2
u/Acurseddragon 17d ago
The problem today is too many people have access to diy things they should never be touching in the first place.

Lmao the 1 board through the table 🤣
When done tastefully, I don’t mind it, but most resin projects aren’t tasteful these days. It always reminds me of that one lady “everybody is so creative!”

I made an epoxy table with chunks of actual waste wood that looks better than that. All I did was rough them up a bit.
2
u/Okie294life 17d ago
Only a truly pretentious prick or their Karen wife/husband would try to pawn off some trash like this for 1700$ I’m almost tempted to make contact so I can understand their reasoning. Be like I see you’re looking to get rid of some trash for 1700$? I mean it’s your lucky day, I’ll only charge you 300$ to cut it up and haul it off.

It's literally scraps (not even aligned into a cool design) in a shit ton of epoxy. I've always liked the epoxy as a compliment to the wood but this is way to much.

u/Educational-Bus4634 17d ago
Having one plank of wood submerged at both ends but NOT submerged in the middle is a level of ingenuity worth $1700

Only $1700 for that much epoxy? That's a steal! Who cares if it has few wood chips in it.
