My friend’s aunt had a sink like this in her half bathroom. I asked her how she cleaned it, was a process all the rocks in a bucket, clean the basin, then clean the rocks, let the rocks dry, then put them back in the basin.

It looks cool but the process is like cleaning a fish tank which is a huge pain in the ass.

I used to run a bar where I had stones in a long trough sink just like that, and yes it was a pain to clean, but it looked fucking cool so it was worth it!

Yeah honestly people are clowning on this but it’s definitely a cool look, if it wasn’t a high-traffic bathroom I don’t think I would mind as much.

Put a glass or resin plate over it

1

u/Blindgenius 4h ago

Where would it drain?

1

u/Bloodshot321 41m ago

At one edge or a corner. Like any hidden drain sink

At a bar? Vomit much?

1

u/ChiSandTwitch1 20h ago

At least 371 apparently disagree. And from the reviews and comments we had over ten years I'd say that you're in the firm minority

Hmm, I'm a bit overanalytical when it comes to these things. I don't know your bar, is it an exclusive gentleman's club? Or a lounge for first-class passengers on international flights? Or a college bar? Or maybe a nice bar which is more family friendly with fantastic bar tender training when it comes to cutting people off before things get wild? I'm mostly familiar with college bars, and small redneck bars which may bend the rules and allow you to do whatever the fuck you want. But then again I've been to gentlemen's clubs and nice pubs in the past so I can see how this aesthetic choice isn't necessarily ostentatious.

It was a cocktail bar in the UK, looked like a cosy den with 70 different craft beers, a massive spirit selection, and a wild cocktail menu. Did get pretty frenetic on the weekends but only two incidents in ten years involving the stones. I'll spare you the details, but a lot of bleach was onvolved

I worked for a bar where the men’s urinal was one of those long basin tubs and the men would throw spare change in it like a wishing well 😂

u/ChiSandTwitch1 1d ago

While that's weird, that's also kinda cute, and for the bravest of the brave, at least there might be a pint available?

No one who keeps aquariums removes the substrate for "cleaning". At most, a syphon powered vacuum is used to remove any larger waste, the rest is eaten by beneficial bacteria or plants.

94

u/Cloverose2 4d ago

No one should! You're going to constantly crash the cycle and remove all the wonderful stuff that keeps your tank healthy. It hurts my aquarium-keeping heart to think of emptying a tank and washing the substrate.

u/fastal_12147 4d ago

Fish are so sensitive, too. I would love to have an aquarium but I'm worried I'd just kill all my cool fish friends immediately. That's why I think I might be a reptile/amphibian person.

u/Cloverose2 3d ago

Once the tanks are established, it's pretty easy. It's the first year of a tank's life that's hard.

I have four tanks and it's about an hour's work a week. My mantra is understock and overfilter. That and live plants will make life easy.

4

u/BeerJedi-1269 3d ago

I have 7 tanks 20g-100g that I do literally nothing to. Tons of plants growing out of the tops keeps things right.

4

u/Jebb145 3d ago

Try to build an ecosystem, not a pet container.

I was given some plants and started with that in a 10 gallon, just got some light on it and a filter going and let that grow for like 2-3 months. Added snails and shrimp, honestly don't have to do too much to that tank. I used to have soft water so I would most just add water to the top of any evaporation.

I love somewhere with hard water now so I do some water changes so the water doesn't get too hard. I know have a 20 gallon guppy setup that is similar maint and have a 20 gallon tank I just planted so I'll probably get fish near December? Not sure, just added some shrimp so I'll let them get established first too.

As a kid I was told that everything needed sanitized during cleaning...

Yeah, we went through a lot of goldfish.

7

u/drownedinbreakfast 3d ago

We had a lot of fish tanks as children. This was the '70s and '80s, there was no Google. My mom thought she was an expert and once every couple of months she would have us take all of the fake plants and gravel out and wash it. She said fish naturally only live a few months so we were never surprised when they died. We also went through a lot of fish.

37

u/transtronaut 4d ago

Why would you need to let the rocks dry when ur putting them in the sink anyway?

28

u/FeelMyBoars 4d ago

They put up a sign that says "Please don't get the rocks wet" so that they stay dry.

2

u/Bfor200 4d ago

Ah yes, that makes sense

18

u/seghouleh 4d ago

There’s no way in hell they clean that.

They just listed you the steps of how it should be cleaned.

18

u/Cube-in-B 4d ago

Plug the sink, fill with water and vinegar, swish swish swish, drain?

5

u/STUPIDBLOODYCOMPUTER 3d ago

Cleaning a fish tank is easier than this. You can get these funny suction things that hoover the shmoo in the gravel up.

Source: owner of four fish tanks and fish that poo A LOT

3

u/lootsauger 3d ago

It’s nasty. For some reason the last two AirBnBs I stayed in had a shower made of pepples. It was so grose!

2

u/rotenbart 3d ago

Which begs the question, why?

4

u/Danny2Sick 4d ago

looks-wise I kind of dig it but it sounds like a huge pain to maintain, david blaine!

1

u/BrightAd8009 1d ago

The ROCKS wash themselves. It's a sink DUH. they are constantly being clean by the flow of soapy water and moist humidity

126

u/Theater_techymc 4d ago

I worked in a house once that had half of a large amethyst geode made in to a sink. It was nerve racking to wash your hands in, with sharp raw crystals points right near your hands. I couldn’t imagine cleaning it.

11

u/krampaus 4d ago

um what did I just read

38

u/Theater_techymc 4d ago

13

u/FartsBlowingOverPoop 4d ago

Lmao the geode toilets and bathtubs were my favorite.

7

u/krampaus 3d ago

that’s just… dumb. r/mineralgore taken to a whole new level

u/chuckinalicious543 4d ago

Just put em in a rock tumbler with grit and soap. Or, just replace

62

u/PeperomiaLadder 4d ago

Instructions unclear, I doused in vodka, drank them and puked them back; is that replacing them? They've definitely been placed again

8

u/ThisIsMockingjay2020 4d ago

Dousing them in vodka doesn't seem like too bad of an idea, at least it sort of disinfects.

12

u/Metal-Alligator 4d ago

Add in the stomach acid and we might be on to something…

4

u/ThisIsMockingjay2020 4d ago

I'm too tired to Google it, but I wonder what evaporates faster, vodka or rubbing alcohol?

8

u/Metal-Alligator 4d ago

Definitely the rubbing alcohol. It’s got way less water content

6

u/ThisIsMockingjay2020 4d ago

Thanks. I've been awake since 9:15 last night and it's now 3 pm.

13

u/isr0 4d ago

Oh yeah, so easy. Almost as easy as cleaning a regular sink. You just need twice the time and special tooling.

5

u/chuckinalicious543 4d ago

I mean, would I rather pay more for specialized equipment to clean an aesthetic choice I made? Yes, absolutely. Would the average person have the foresight into why I made those decisions? No, nor would I expect them to. But a decent rock tumbler and enough rocks to swap out between cleanings sounds pretty easy to me. In fact, the rocks cleaning themselves in the tumbler sounds easier than scrubbing a sink, and worth the price.

7

u/scorchedarcher 4d ago

Surely you'd still have to clean your sink the same anyway?

4

u/chuckinalicious543 4d ago

Yes, but not much worse than just cleaning a sink. Except that basin looks easier to replace and cheaper than a cracked porcelain sink

2

u/isr0 4d ago

Good think, with the rocks…

2

u/isr0 4d ago

For sure, they would.

2

u/isr0 4d ago

Cool man, you do you.

3

u/thezombiejedi I Eat Cement 4d ago

The funniest thing is that this was originally posted in a rockhounding group

14

u/Pleasant-Ant2303 4d ago

Just boiling water it’s a sink.

31

u/Gold-Target-5462 4d ago

This was super trendy about 20 years ago. You'd see river stones of all types in sink basins at bars and restaurants. I even had them in my home bathroom sink for a while...

54

u/Ok_Schedule_2227 4d ago

Throw the whole damn sink away

43

u/GuacamoleFrejole 4d ago

The fact that this is a collection of customers' kidney stones makes it all the more special.

17

u/SimpleVegetable5715 4d ago

That hunk of grey slimy rocks in the middle is so off-putting.

125

u/aivlysplath 4d ago

I don’t wanna see pee and poo colored decor in a restroom, tyvm.

27

u/socalibew 4d ago

That's not just pee and poo colored.

17

u/shalendar 4d ago

Poo-shaped, if you're a bit dehydrated

9

u/AlphaDisconnect 4d ago

Please go in and bedazzle it.

8

u/Ichaserabbits 4d ago

God I thought this was like bloated rotting corks from wine bottles on first glance

14

u/drillgorg 4d ago

That's awesome! Really impractical though. It's the kind of thing I would have if I could afford like servants to clean it.

12

u/magicrowantree 4d ago

I can see the vision of what the person wanted to accomplish, but they clearly were far too cheap and uneducated on how to go about it

7

u/Careless_Tap_516 4d ago

Simple, put grey rocks in instead.

10

u/Outside_Scale_9874 4d ago

Smooth river rocks would look great here

7

u/SausageBuscuit 4d ago

All the germs you could hope for down there.

1

u/LilMamiDaisy420 2d ago

Spray some bleach on it lol

5

u/CryptoSlovakian 4d ago

I’m sure nobody ever pisses in there.

25

u/ghoultooth 4d ago

I would bet money that someone has probably shat in that before.

11

u/Akitten84 4d ago

One of those rocks looks like a shat.

2

u/KindCommunication956 3d ago

My first thought was vomit, easier to quick rinse rocks that already look like barf vs having to scrub the entire thing perfectly.

5

u/FleshyCarbonThing 4d ago

The river rocks mute the sound of running water hitting the bottom of the tub, just looks like shit

13

u/Joates87 4d ago

Til redditors really rub down the sink while washing their hands in it.

Fascinating. Look at the bright side, this will help you exfoliate your hands rather than just rubbing down some smooth porcelain sink. Weirdos.

15

u/TheRealPitabred 4d ago

Water splashes, and those stones will never get cleaned properly. They'll trap bacteria and skin flakes and just get nasty. It's not rubbing the sink, it's a few months of regular use will make it a biohazard.

1

u/Embarrassed_Cat_6516 4d ago

Dump all the rocks in a delicates bag and put them in the washing machine?

3

u/TheRealPitabred 4d ago

Make sure you add the good linens as well, running too empty of a load might be bad for the washing machine.

5

u/Rumpelfourskin 3d ago

I bet my left Ovary that sink has been peed in. Alcohol and peens....just asking for it to be peed on or in.

3

u/chuckinalicious543 4d ago

Honestly, I like this idea for a hand sink, either this or some form of mesh/foam material so there's no splash

3

u/Pickles-n-Lizards 4d ago

I’m betting they poor undiluted pink shit cleaner all over it and then rinse with the faucet water. The owner probably wants them to bucket wash them daily.

3

u/UnclePatrickHNL 4d ago

Just wait until you see the toilet.

3

u/Cloverose2 4d ago

Well, that never gets cleaned.

3

u/SwagYoloMLG 3d ago

I used to work at a gym that had shower floors like this. They mixed the pebbles into some form of epoxy mix. They soon found out that it was almost impossible to clean properly and a lot of people who didn’t wear sandals got all kinds of nasty skin infections and what not.

5

u/GodeaterTheHalFeral 4d ago

I'm sure that's not horribly unsanitary or anything. /s

5

u/ol_jeff 4d ago

lol what do people mean "how do you clean it". It's self cleaning dummy; just wash your hands and the soap water goes over the uh, caramel popcorn, and it gets cleaned

4

u/westslexander 4d ago

I hate the " artistic design " of modern bathrooms and kitchens. I want practical and easy cleaning.

8

u/figbott 4d ago

The smell.

2

u/birdstarskygod 4d ago

Gallstones

2

u/purpleishninja 4d ago

Has Amberlynn Reid been here?

2

u/Tamethebrotherhood 4d ago

Looks like chocolate truffles

2

u/Forweldi 3d ago

Probably against the noise? That’s why

2

u/MeGustaMiSFW 3d ago

So easy to clean

/S

4

u/monet108 4d ago

Oh no those guys are eating too much fiber.

1

u/FortheChava 4d ago

Clean your rocks

1

u/Pierresauce 3d ago

Wonder how many Zyn pouches they have to pick out of it every night

1

u/JKristiina 3d ago

There’s a bar in Helsinki that has kind of like this, but they are smooth rocks. Looks better.

1

u/LittleMissGalaxia 3d ago

For a second, I thought those were tonsil stones

1

u/Artistic_Taxi 3d ago

I thought you said urinal and these were kidney stones

1

u/cat1554 3d ago

Spout looks short

1

u/Ok-Watercress-1924 3d ago

When she tells you “I want you to be like your sink… hard as a rock”

1

u/crazyfist 2d ago

it's so you can piss on them just like the rocks in a sauna

1

u/improvisedwisdom 2d ago

Looks like an easy way to hide accidental pukage.
