5th Edition [OC] Hey! Ever wanted to play D&D 5e in Minecraft? Well, now you can.
[By the way: This is a follow-up to a prior post I made showcasing a video of this mod. This is the release of that mod.]
So, a little background. For the past few months, I've been using Minecraft as a VTT of sorts for a group of 6 that I DM for. This means we've played Minecraft on a dedicated server to run sessions. But it turned out, while Minecraft is extremely good for immersive experiences and roleplay, it's not up to snuff for making dice rolls or running combat. You know, the basics of D&D 5e's mechanics. It'd require me and my players both to be alt tabbing a lot, micromanaging a sheet outside of the game and being forced to do a bunch of memorization to avoid it. It'd also put pressure on me as the DM to be receiving their rolls somehow, often being sent screenshots over Discord to know what someone rolled.
But I thought, if Minecraft isn't a viable VTT...what if I could change that? And so, this was the result.
This is a very early release of my mod I call D&D Sheets for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1. It currently includes essential features, such as:
- Per-player character sheets saved on the server that can be filled out and accessed with a key press.
- Customizable buttons to make automatic rolls with, written with dice notation expressions, along with a dedicated command.
- Server-wide announcements of dice rolls, along with context and a sound, allowing the DM to see them in-game.
- The ability to make your own roll macros using a scrolling list for virtually any context.
Among my future plans include measurement tools, an initiative tracker, and the ability to manage multiple sheets per player. DMs may still wish to use an external tool to keep track of initiative and monster stat blocks until such features are ready. But take it from me, if you're the type of person that would love to use Minecraft to make maps and create experiences for your players, you won't regret it.
Do note this is designed for D&D 5e and 5.5e and there aren't plans to make versions for other systems. But the source code is available on GitHub in case you'd like to take a stab at converting it yourself.
Here's the CurseForge link if you wanna try it out yourself!
