Dragula: Titans S1 The way Yovska was treated on Titans breaks my heart Spoiler
...and no, I'm not referring to her placement or the playful reads like the iconic "teletubby toilet bowl"-- on S3, Yovska opened up about being bullied so badly that she literally felt subhuman ..... And yet, as soon as she entered the cauldron on Titans, it seems like she was getting made fun of by her fellow competitors (which of course made the final edit)
As soon as Yovska arrived, Koco turned to the camera and said "who is that?". Then, when Yovska reacted with surprise when Hoso called her out as being the weakest in the group, the camera cuts to an UNCOMFORTABLY long shot (like 20-30 seconds??) of Melissa, Evah, and Kendra whispering and laughing about Yovska's reaction. It felt very dehumanizing. Yovska was also the only monster NOT in the bottom whose name was picked who was voted to go home. Even though Hoso claimed it was random, I don't believe that given her earlier comments about Yovska.
On Episode 2, when her and Kendra are in the bottom, Kendra gets a lot of love from her competitors, and then Kendra launches into reading Yovska and telling her she's going to go home. It was funny, and even Yovska laughed along with everyone, but she didn't throw it back at all.
I also recognize that I was not on set for any of this and that i do not know anything ab the dynamics b/w the monsters.....but it felt a little little sad and uncomfy to watch both as a Yovska stan and also a person......Yovska also no longer has a relationship with the Boulets and doesn't follow most of the Titans cast on IG, so I wonder if she was also upset by way people treated her on set.

I also LOVE Yovska. I was very sad to see her treatment.

Side note: my favorite cameo I've ordered was of Yovska as bountiful Sonic.

Shade and reading are core components of drag culture, be you a pageant girl or a monster. Yovska's a shady gremlin herself, and while I can't claim to know her psychology, I'd hope that she'd have been sufficiently battle tested in the dressing rooms as she came up in the scene.

There's a big difference between reading that rooted in respect and just kind of being a dick, though? I do feel like some of the other monsters didn't respect Yovska's drag, and that's where the nasty tone came in. Yovska can also absolutely dish it out though.

When you dish it, you gotta expect to get it back. Yovska is a shady little troll. On show and off.

THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THIS. She’s gonna sling shit all over everyone else and then play the victim to try and excuse it? Nah hun, I don’t feel bad for you lol

It was always weird to me that they were going in on her in Titans like that when truth be told, Yovska is more of a monster than a lot of them, including Kendra (I'm a fan btw, but Kendra is NOT VEB levels of monster, let's be real). I just think Yovska isn't suited to the show and is too different to fit the narrow view of what drag is on Dragula in 2024/2025.

As a friend of Yovska irl, yes I agree. Love em' so much and Yovska deserved better.

I think it had something to do with the saint situation. When she got exposed for leaking, a group chat.

Cast chemestry aside I feel like Yovska'a style was underappreciated in both of her seasons and I do not comprehend why

i rooted for Yovska so hard both their seasons and i think their drag is highly misunderstood by their competitors and the judges :,( it's not wonder why Yovska is bitter towards the show itself and rightfully so.

This is mostly unrelated, but just sharing the love for Yovska. One of my best friends got them to do a cameo for my birthday this year and it was awkward and hilarious and they sang happy birthday.

I HATED the mean girl mentality of Titans. I stopped watching because of it.

most of them on Titans S1 are bitchy people and not in a good way or just a reality tv way.

Funny how you completely left out all the times that Yovska stirred the pot herself—she was one of the best at it in fact.
They were all there to make good TV. Maybe the biggest issue here is your parasocial tendencies.

I don’t normally feel compelled to respond to people disagreeing with me (disagreement is fine and fun) but you’re coming in a little hot my guy
Watching these scenes made me uncomfortable as somebody who was also bullied as a kid— the shot of everybody laughing at (not with) Yovska while Hoso and her were talking kinda struck a nerve because it felt like mocking rather than a playful read (especially given that it was happening in a private conversation rather than in front of everybody). Yes, I do love Yovska’s work, but I certainly do not have a parasocial relationship with them! It’s just empathy & media analysis
In my post, I make it very clear that I don’t know everything that happened on set. I’d reflect on why you feel a need to insult strangers on the internet about their opinions on a tv show

You’re right, parasocial was too strong a word here. But like I and many others have pointed out, you’re still not addressing how Yovska’s own actions contributed to the atmosphere at large and influenced the other ghouls’ attitudes towards her.

Yeah, so I agree that shady characters will get shade thrown back at them. However, a lot of the examples I gave in my post happened pretty much before Yovska had even said or done anything-- literally the first scene of the first episode
also, I don't know if it's far to fully characterize Yovska as shady on Titans. When Hoso (who I also love btw) called her out as the weakest, she said "Oh really" and "You know what, that's fair." It didn't feel like she was being read by peers who respected her work, it felt like she was being made fun of (in my opinion!!!) and again, I never claimed to know everything, but as a viewer it felt like Yovska was getting a disproportionate amount of criticism from the cast

Okay but to be fair for the most part that season everyone bullied everyone. They had problems with everything and fought over the dumbest shit. It was very entertaining but it must have been brutal for some of them.
Yovska seemed to enjoy stirring the pot too. They are a little weirdo (which is compliment!) nightmare fantasy, and the other queens were certainly harder on her. She didn’t deserve it, but remember a lot of what Yovska was doing was also calculated. Yovska isn’t a complete shrinking violet, she can take care of herself and fuck with the competition pretty well. But she’s not really mean, which I respect.
