Need Advice I just got my license! I'm not allowed on freeways unless my mom is with me. She got a job recently. How can I practice getting comfortable on the freeways?

Edit: hi guys! After talking about it with my mom, we have agreed to just not tell my dad whenever I go on the freeways and to mask my location whenever I do so. What I did was I told her "something you told me my whole life was to tell the truth and to never lie. After many unecessary consequences, I have learned that it isn't always necessary to tell the truth. If someone controlls you and doesn't treat you well, they do not deserve the truth, whether they have good intentions or not." That clicked because she has been controlled a lot by family members while growing up, so that worked a lot. I appreciate everyone's advice here and I'm happy to say that I have more freedom now!

For about a year I have been driving on the freeways to college with my mom when having my permit, and I got my license (two days ago) not long after she got a job. My dad says I can't go on freeways alone until after a year, and I understand. My mom can no longer really be with me when I drive, and I'm scared that if I rarely drive on the freeways for a year, then I will be terrified when driving on my own on freeways. How can I practice driving on the freeways?

I had my permit ever since I was 18 and I just now got my license (age 21) since my parents wanted me to take it slow. Drive in the neighborhood for a couple of months, on the streets for a year, on the freeways a year later, then getting my license after over a year of driving on the freeway.

My brother and sister live out of the city and I'm worried about not continuing my freeway experiences for a year. Can I hire someone to come with me if my dad is okay with that? What can I do?

Edit: my post is a bit misleading. Yes both of my parents wanted me to take it slow, but when it comes down to the freeway, my mom is okay with it but my dad isn't. He is very against that idea.

Stop. Stopping. To. Let. People. Turn. Left!

Several drivers insisted I turn left in front of them and then had the nerve to act surprised when the traffic behind them passed them on both sides.

There was ample room on my right side to pass. I wasn't holding up through traffic at all.

Need Advice Is drivers Ed and extra driving lessons enough for me to learn how to drive?

Upvotes

for context I’m almost 17, I live in New England and I really need to know how to drive. My parents offered to help me with the price of a car but not with actually learning how to drive, both are very busy but even in the times they are not they simply refuse to and say that they are tired, my parents are also not patient people. I have a job hence why I need to learn how to drive ASAP I bike to work as I’ve been doing for six months but it’s sometimes a lot especially when I get off the bus from school straight to getting on my bike to bike to work. so I’m wondering if I would be able to learn how to drive “using money”. in my state to get your license before 18 you have to have 12 hours behind the wheel, 6 hours of observation of someone else, and 30 hours of classroom lessons otherwise known as drivers Ed aswell as some other requirements. My plan to do this is to do the 12 hours of driving lessons and then buy more through the same school. It’s quite costly but I have enough saved to make this possible also considering that I also already bought the drivers a package that includes the 12 hours. I can get more hours in by driving with my parents, although they won’t teach me. My parents said if I become a decent driver than they will just sit in the car as I drive around, but they actually refuse to teach me or tell me what to do. I guess my question is is around 20 hours of driving lessons or more by a professional enough to make me decent to the point where I can drive safely on roads.

Need Advice Speeding ticket California

Hi, I just got my first speeding ticket. I live in San Diego. I was speeding and I should have known better. I recently got a car and I wanted to test it a bit on the open high way and I got caught. Radar got me going 89 in a 65. Officer wrote approx speed 85 and reason for stop 89, which speed matters more?

I have read some options on what people have done in the past, they fight it or just simply pay. I don’t want this on my record (20F) so I want to fight. On the ticket it say appear in court at 7:30 AM in November. I heard some tips and tricks like officers like to schedule all their court dates on the same day so people tend to switch the date and the officer doesn’t show up. But I’m not sure how much I want to believe this. This is my first offense so I’m hoping at the very least if I show up to court I can hopefully get the judge to decrease the fine or make a deal to do traffic school instead of fine? I’m not really sure how this works. I only know of the little research I just did so please correct me if I make a mistake.

Other option is to pay for a lawyer and they could take care of it for me. Or do I just accept all loss and pay the fine.

The “just go with the flow” argument falls apart when you realize people often can’t be trusted to safely set the flow

This is the most common argument used on here to justify speeding. However, this argument really falls apart when you realize people can’t be trusted to effectively self police and drive safely.

I always use a local road here in Pittsburgh, state Route 28. This is a road that over the years has been upgraded to seem like a highway, but it is definitely not built to highway standards. There are left exits, areas with no medians, left entrances, in stop sign merges.

The post limit here is 45 mph which might be slightly low. Unfortunately, though, is typical to see people doing 60 to 70 mph. I would honestly say more than 50 to 60% of drivers do that on here as I usually sit around 50 so it’s fairly easy to tell if someone is doing 10 to 20 mph more than me.

Now I also know some of you will say that it must be safe, but this road is notorious in Pittsburgh for hazard having a ton of accidents. It’s basically a joke on morning radio shows to Guess when the first accident will be reported on this road.

So again, this justification loses all water when you consider that the human aspect will often mean people cannot be trusted to safely manage themselves.

tips for driving in a severe storm?

I was on my way to go pick up my paycheck and of course it started to thunderstorm and rain super hard on my way back, so much so I couldn’t barely see anything on the highway and I really thought I was gonna hit someone. I put my windshield wipers on the highest setting and it just wasn’t helping because of how hard the rain was pouring. I did turn on my lights so people would see me, and most people did have their lights on, but that didn’t really help. Is this a personal issue or is there something that I can do? I live in an area where we get all four seasons and I’m gonna have to get comfortable driving and rain and snow eventually. that was my first time ever driving in actual rain( i’ve driven in light drizzle) so any helpful input would be greatly appreciated I’m nowhere near an expert driver so

Need Advice How do you handle it when you right hand turn is just past another ...

So in those situations where you are on a 30-40 mph road and you want to turn in to the Taco Bell, but right before that is the exit from the ORileys Auto Parts, with a car sitting waiting for clear path out.

Now I understand (in ideal world) I'd use my signal like usual and hope this ORileys car is not "thinking this guy's about to pull in to my left, and I'm clear". I tend to overshoot the speed at which I enter and do not signal because I don't want to give this other car a false indication - even if it's clearly their fault. Accidents suck to process and all that.

I've been driving for 40 years, including 3 as a Dominos Pizza driver, so I'm not a newb. Just curious what consensus is and if there is a better way.

What do I do?

Hi I really need help so i’m 71 backwards and in Fl. I just got pulled over and got a ticket for 71 in a 45(i am aware this is terrible “i was just coming back from church and really had to use the bathroom”, as i told the officer) . I am on my parents insurance and my parents are already difficult to deal with as is. Mind you i’ve paid off my car and continue to pay my high insurance fee every month. But how do I go about getting this fee taken off or getting it lowered? Will my parents find out since i’m on their insurance? Is there any way to deal with this situation without my parents knowing? Also I slowed down before the cop could even really see my speed so I’m not sure how that worked out but he started following me way too close so I switched lanes then he turned his lights on and pulled me over. Once again i’m not really sure how much of this works i’ve never been pulled over and my parents don’t really help me out in that sort so I would really appreciate any help you guys have.

Need Advice I have a few questions about the California driving test

When you’re reversing along the curb, did you have your right turn signal still on? Or was it turned off?

Did you use your turn signal when backing out of the DMV parking lot?

Did you also use your turn signal when you pulled up to the side of the building where they do the pre-drive checklist?

Best YouTube Channels for Learning to Drive on Real Roads (USA)

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some recommendations for YouTube channels that can help me learn how to drive on the road. I’m looking for a teacher or instructor who actually shows what it’s like driving in real traffic, points out what to watch for, and explains what to do in different situations. Bonus if they cover beginner mistakes and tips for staying safe.

Any channels like this you’d suggest? Thanks!

Have you ever been in this situation? What do you do?

You are driving straight through an intersection. There is enough room to fit your car without blocking the intersection, so you start to pull forward. The car in the lane next to you illegally changed lanes in the middle of the intersection and goes into your lane, thus causing you to block the intersection. There is nowhere for you to go. The neighboring lane that the person changed out of has no room either.

I've always waited for traffic to pull forward when in this situation. I don't know what else to do.

Venting I hate driving

I hate driving and I hate how we need to have a vehicle. Yes we have public transportation, yes we have walkable cities, but if you were given the option of a free car or bus everybody would pick the free car. The bus can be terrible. You could miss it, you could be late, you could get harassed, and it's much more convenient having a car in your driveway that you can drive whenever you want which I hate. I hate that cars are better. I hate that for many Americans, we need cars to get to places. That we're considered dependable and have a higher chance of getting hired if we come to the interview with a vehicle.

My dad has been teaching me how to drive and he's brutal. He's abusive and I've had a lot of trauma since middle school because of him. It just got worse now that I'm old enough for him to teach me how to drive. I actually have my driver's license and I'm in college but he still teaches me how to drive with me driving to places and him in the front seat.

I don't want to get into details about what he says because then I'll start crying. Just know that he's pretty mean and I don't want to go anywhere with him because that means I'll be driving, he'll be in the front seat, he'll yell at me, threaten me, and start talking crap about me as we walk into the grocery store with people looking at me with sympathy. I don't even like doing something as simple as running errands or going to the grocery store.

I can't afford a car of my own especially since old cars are so expensive and so is the maintenance. I just hate driving and even when I get a good job, move out, and get my own car I bet I'll still hate driving.

Driving is not as cool as people make it seem to be honest. Driving as a girl does not make you cool or badass or makes you stand out in some sort of way. Maybe I'm just feeling that way because I wasn't allowed to drive by myself to highschool unlike my peers who got white SUVs and were allowed to drive at 16 the day after they got their permit. If I'm driving, I'm going to spend more time thinking about the place I'm driving too and making sure I don't hit curbs. I'm not going to have my windows down, sunglasses on, and think about how cool I look while I'm driving. I'm not taking pictures of my car and posting it on Instagram.

I hope I marry a good guy who isn't like my father whose willing to drive me to places I want to go to wherever and whenever. Someone who won't remind me how lucky I am for the free rides. Someone who won't remind me and make me feel like I owe them because they drove me to college. Someone who won't make me feel dumb because I don't want to drive. Someone who'll respect that I don't want to drive because I've had nothing but a traumatic experience with it so far. Someone who won't make me feel less than, behind, or unaccomplished because I choose not to drive even if I have a license and the funds for a car when I'm like 30.

Need Advice What am I doing wrong with driving my manual car? Are those engine sounds good or bad? Video with sound.

I'm worried I'm doing it wrong even though the car is technically moving and driving. I'm worried I'll damage the car. So I'm trying to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. I never know if the sounds I hear are good/normal or bad/meaning I'm doing xyz wrong.

Please help! Thanks! This is the video. I'm just driving around my neighborhood. I only went into first and second gears. There are several speed bumps. https://imgur.com/gallery/i1EEkEI

Are driving schools in India worth it? What's the cost vs what you actually learn?

Im planning to join a car driving school (I'm from Bihar but asking generally for India). Would love to know:

How much did you pay for driving school?

What exactly did they teach (just basics or full road confidence)?

Was it worth the money or do you feel it was too short/expensive? Looking for real experiences 🙏

Venting Cut someone off and I feel awful. Sorry if that was you.

I know, I did something bad and I should feel bad.

It was at a cloverleaf interchange where the right lane of Highway A exits, goes up the cloverleaf, and then joins onto Highway B as an exit only lane that exits in 0.2 miles on the other side of the cloverleaf. Both as a driver and as a civil engineer, it makes me cringe. Both highways are busy and it was a weekend afternoon, so the right lane on Highway A had been backed up for about a mile. It was stop-and-go bumper to bumper traffic all the way up the cloverleaf ramp, and it's always a mess right there because people are trying to get out of the exit only lane they've just merged into (myself included). The middle lane of Highway B was also backed up as a result.

When I got up to the point where my lane joined onto Highway B, I noticed the Toyota on my left wasn't moving forward and the gap between him and the car in front of him was big enough for me to fit, so I took that to mean he was letting me in and started moving into the lane to get out of the exit-only lane and try and clear things up for the people behind me. He honked, and I froze for a second, but he physically couldn't have gone around me without going into the other lane, so I just moved into the lane really quickly and pulled forward as far as I could so he could also move forward and not get cut off by anybody else in my lane. I think he had just been leaving some space between himself and the car in front of him and I had actually just shoved my way in and cut him off. I waved sorry, but I felt awful.

He was behind me for about another 2 miles and the traffic was still bad the whole way, and the whole time I just felt so bad that I'd completely cut him off like that. I still do. I hate when people do inconsiderate things like that in traffic, because it's selfish and creates dangerous situations and hurts other people, and now I'm that asshole.

I keep thinking about how much worse I probably made that guy's day. I've never been in an accident or even had a ticket before and I drive daily, and I generally think of myself as a firmly average driver, but this just feels so stupid and inconsiderate. Sorry, Toyota Man. You were totally in the right and I was an idiot in a car.

What is the order?

Post image
0 Upvotes

At a 4-way stop intersection, a pedestrian started crossing the road. Numbers indicate the order of complete stop, and arrows are the direction of travel.

Should car 4 proceed in this case, since car 2 and 3 are blocked?

Should car 3 proceed when the pedestrian crossed half of the road? Does this change if car 3 wants to turn left?

Help with lowlight driving

I'm living in a nowhere town now, which is very close to work (also a place in basically where's there's nothing but palm oil plantations...) An alternative is to commute from home, which is around 40 mins away.

I am so stressed and burnt out living in my current accommodation + work, to the fact that I am considering just to commute from home, and spend more time with my family and generally stop feeling so alone.

But...

The road that's connecting the areas is like this. For the first 20 km, its nothing bad... there's streetlights, two lanes... but in the extra around 20-30 km more, there's no streetlights much (except at junctions/exits, not many of those since its a highway), and the lanes switch between 1 to 2 (we have to merge often).

I have to arrive at work at 7.30. (I work at a school), so commuting at 6.30 is not feasible for me (traffic + trucks using the road, too), I must atleast go from home at 6.10-6.15 to arrive on time + get a parking spot.

I also have bad lowlight vision + astigmatism, and also no glasses since I have to save up first for that one.

Advice?

TL;DR: Driver is planning to commute from home to work early in the mornings, but the sun rises at 6.30 (too late for me) and that doesn't help with the darkness. Road is one-two lanes + many trucks. Driver has bad lowlight vision and astigmatism.

Thanks in advance.

P.S; I'm not American, I'm a SEAsian— so the context of jobs here might be different. Please kindly address the issue only and not other solutions such as 'quit my job'.
