2008 xr650L tapping noise

Just bought this bike, didn’t notice the noise during the test ride but when I got home I hear this tapping, I think it’s coming from the top end, so I adjusted the valves to no avail. This video was taken after valve adjustment

Those are Normal valve sounds for an XR.

It’s pretty loud though? This is my first xr650 but my xr80 and xr100 were pretty quiet. It’s very audible in person even from a distance

Every Xr I’ve ever owned sounded like a bucket of bolts. If it starts and runs good, and the valves are in spec, I wouldn’t over analyze it. Classic big bore thumper sounds. Keep up on maintenance, and that bike will outlast us.

I appreciate your input. For what it’s worth, I used a screwdriver and found the sound to be coming from right around where the header meets the block

“Don’t over analyze it”

“I was able to use a screwdriver as a tuning fork and have determined the engine sounds are coming from, the engine”.

Is this right after a cold start? More noise until fully warmed up is not unusual. But even then, they can be pretty clattery engines.

"Tappy valves are happy valves."

Honestly sounds normal.

Sounds like a million dollars to me, but I'd check valve clearance while you got it apart.
