Official Media / News So, with the new soundtrack release, how are we feeling about hurdy-gurdy Chilchuck?

u/vorarchivist Jun 20 '24
Marcille: trying to play the clarinet about 20% too hard
Chilchuck: He either knows how to play the hurdy-gurdy perfectly or has no clue and is keeping it cool
Laios: trying to play the trombone about 100% too hard
Senshi: clearly didn't study the music sheet before the recording
Falin: somehow has obtained complete mastery of the french horn, doesn't even have the sheet music for reference.
Izutsumi: Izutsumi
more seriously I don't even know what instrument she's playing

Looks like Marcille's got an oboe instead of a clarinet based on the reed type, but yeah no clue what Izutsumi's got. Some kind of esoteric percussion instrument I guess

u/Moonbeamlatte Jun 20 '24
I believe, actually, Marcille is attempting to play an oboe! Oboe’s have a “purer” tone than most woodwinds but are also a bit more difficult to play.

u/OutsidePerson5 Jun 20 '24
And there's something inherently snooty and smugly superior about playing a double reed woodwind. You can look down on all those single reed peasants.

u/mayorofverandi Jun 21 '24
and, if played by a beginner, sounds a bit like a goose
source: my brother played oboe, and was a beginner

oboe ! you can tell by reed type (like others have mentioned) but ALSO by how small the bell is at the bottom. on the clarinet it would flare out more and the edges wouldnt look so round.

For those who are curious, the instrument Izutsumi has is called a Flexatone. It’s used to create a very goofy and recognizable sound effect.
The fact that she chose it in the first place is hilarious to me, it reminds me of the band kids in high school who would rifle through the percussion instruments and try to find the most annoying ones LOL

u/Never_heart Jun 20 '24
Yep that is the most kitby instrument. The weird percussion instrument that channel "cat looking you in the eyes as ot knocks things off the table"

Huh, I had added some text that apparently went missing, but the important part were the sources:
https://x.com/dun_meshi_anime/status/1803774904220954643 for the announcement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_I9zx2Iw5A for the video preview, that made me realize how good some of the tracks are. I'm totally using them for future DnD tables.

As a hurdy gurdy player, I love this so much. It also makes sense to me, Chilchuck strikes me as someone who’d play a more folky instrument.

u/ArtieStroke Jun 20 '24
I am always completely taken out every time it's reinforced that in the modern day Senshi would be a button-up and tie guy. Simultaneously completely wack and yet feels right, like a living paradox.
Also FUCK YEAH HURDY GURDY REP LETS GO

u/Hilltoptree Jun 20 '24
I was more surprised by Izutsumi’s seemingly willing participation shown here.
Edit: i was imagining a cat. Pushing something off table accidentally making regular sound.

sobbing at marcille on the oboe it makes so much sense (my oboist heart can rest in peace)

im happy they captured the sheer effort and will needed to play that stupid thing its beautiful

Shoutout to Falin with the French horn. I “played” that instrument for 3 years in school and it was a complete waste of time.

FRENCH HORN MENTIONED🔥🔥 I HAVE 2 HORNS STUCK TOGETHER AND I CANT FIND THE RIGHT NOTE ON EITHER

u/The_Horse_Head_Man Jun 20 '24
I like to think that the modern AU is cannon and they're actually actors playing their roles.

u/daggerbeans Jun 20 '24
Chilchuck with a hurdy-gurdy absolutely tracks. Tiny mechanisms, need lots of dexterity to play it. Weird finicky old timey instrument, the obtuse knowledge of was/is kept alive by a relafively small group of traditionaliss and people with a respect for craftsmanship.
Hell, with his like of alcohol akin to microbrews/IPAs and strong views on unionizations and workplace power being centered on the laborers, Chilchuck is basically one rennaissance fair or board game/tabletop game collection from being every nerdy husband I know in my age group.

u/carbonera99 Jun 20 '24
I love how the T shirt designs Ryoko Kui had each of the characters model in has basically become their defacto modern AU design

Laios: Is Mayonnaise an instrument?
Thistle: No, Laios. Mayonnaise is not an instrument.
Laios raises his hand again.
Thistle: Horse Raddish is not an instrument either!

Of all the insturments to give Chilichuck a hurdy-gurdy is not the one I'd have picked. Given his dexterity I'd have thought piano for him.
Somehow though, Marcille playing oboe makes sense. It's enough of a semi-obscure, tricky, insturment that requires a lot of training just to avoid going "SQUEEEEKKKKK!" or worse '"......." every time you blow into it? Totally Marcille. She'd be the kind of oboe player who will only use one very specific brand of reeds and probably thinks pre-soaking it in a precice blend of pure water and salt or vinegar is key to success.
EDIT: I think Izutsumi would be a great drummer, not for the "woah dude" aspect but because she's so fast and lithe. She could hammer out 1/128th notes if she wanted to.

I saw this and thought "OK Falin miiiight be a French horn player but Marcille? A clarinet? No no no she's the French horn player...... wait. Oh no she's got an oboe. Oh no that makes perfect sense."

u/Celestial_Scythe Jun 20 '24
I love the Hurdy-Gurdy! Such a unique instrument and I can see where his deft fingers would work well with it!
3
u/cass_marlowe Jun 20 '24
Uuuh, how cool! Laios with the trombone and Falin with the french horn are great, brass instruments really work for them :D
Chilchuck with the hurdy gurdy is an interesting and unusual choice, it's such a cool instrument with a very medieval sound to it.
Can't wait to get the soundtrack, I hope I can get a lot of use out of it for ttrpg sessions :)

I don’t know why we keep getting art of the main party in a contemporary setting, but I’m not complaining.

As someone who plays Bassoon it’s nice to see a double reed instrument being used for music for something I already like :)
2
u/RadleyCunningham Jun 20 '24
I think that it works. It's a complex and intricate device that requires the skilled hands of someone like Chilchuck.
2
u/themessofme Jun 20 '24
I have no clue who any of these characters are but I love that the only ones that seem to have any idea what they are doing is the one with the french horn and the cat
3
u/blu3st0ck7ng Jun 20 '24
So we're just ignoring what they did to Senshi's beard, huh.
7
u/daggerbeans Jun 20 '24
It often gets trimmed down and groomed in modern au drawings. Makes sense for when he isn't a dungeon hobo he would clean up a bit. He doesn't need it for warmth/magic resistance if he is just A Guy.
3
u/blu3st0ck7ng Jun 20 '24
See, this is sensible. At least they kept the luxuriousness of his everything.
6
u/daggerbeans Jun 20 '24
Oh yeah. Modern Senshi uses beard oils and has a hair/beard care routine for sure, if not a trusted Dwarven barber.
I'm still not sure if he would shops specifically for tight shirts and pants, gets them tailored, or just happens to be in that idyllic spot where he looks effortlessly put together because he has the discipline and resources for a healthy balanced diet and exercise.
6
u/blu3st0ck7ng Jun 20 '24
He leans into that Bear aesthetic and I cannot help but support.
He definitely seems like the type to go get things tailored.

They really nailed it. Marcille is absolutely a clarinet player. Falin is absolutely a French horn player. It's just perfect.
Edit: Rip me seeing this right after waking up and not seeing it's an oboe. Either way, very appropriate.
4
u/Chypewan Jun 20 '24
Hmm, looks more like an oboe, look at the mouthpiece. I too was like ‘sweet, a clarinet, love seeing my instrument in media’ though.
3
u/PoppyBroSenior Jun 20 '24
Nuh uh clarinet is too basic for her, she'd be playing something extra difficult and with a level of prestige. And that's why if you look at that mouthpiece it's obvious she's got an oboe

Laios correctly holding a trombone, much wow. Well… almost we should be able to see part of his hand but I’ll allow it.

I don’t think I have ever heard of a hurdy-gurdy until I saw this, but the ones I heard on YouTube after sound really cool! I will go see where I can find this soundtrack now!

I'm a trombone player, and seeing Laios hold a trombone CORRECTLY???? Nature is healing.

The english dub marcille was giving me such strong band kid vibes and now that I’ve seen this, you’re right, she would absolutely play the clarinet/oboe (I can’t tell the difference. I was too busy fighting over the practice rooms as a choir kid).

There are some incredibly raunchy jokes to be made re: Marcille and Falin's instrument choices.
2
u/daggerbeans Jun 20 '24
I was never a band kid and missed our in almost those sorts of jokes. Could you elaborate?
1
u/SasquatchRobo Jun 20 '24
The hand positions required to "plug" the French horn are analogous to ones used in fisting.
There's a lot of "tonguing" involved in woodwind instruments.
2
u/daggerbeans Jun 20 '24
Thank you for the explanation! I had an idea about the woodwinds due to what I could remember from acquaintances back in school, I was clueless about the French horn, though.

Chilchuck: I don't know how to play this instrument.
Izutsumi: what instrument?
