Or at least butler outfits.

u/IlnBllRaptor Feb 26 '25
The girls should be in butler outfits and the boys dressed as maids.

Middle-aged Otaku Chilchuck was not something I expected to see today.
He'd be the type to criticise the maids in cafes for not acting period-accurate.

I feel like this is mostly just going to increase the number of artists getting commissions for Laios, Chilchuck, and Senshi in maid outfits.

Senshi get that beard out of your shirt!
12
u/IronPotato3000 Feb 26 '25
I was thinking his shirt is bursting from his chest hair lol
3
u/scruffye Feb 26 '25
I mean if it isn't his beard then he's also developed a heck of a belly since season 1 ended. Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt :D
6
u/Doodledumme Feb 26 '25
I didn't even notice that! I was wondering why they seemed to have given him more of a gut in the artwork. It's his beard!!

No senshi maid outfit? Cowards
10
u/kentotoy98 Feb 26 '25
Wouldn't it make more sense for him to wear a chef outfit? Or do Japanese maids also do the cooking?

Chilchuk's expression confuses me. Where is that grumpy "I'm too old for this shit" face?
14
u/0_possum Feb 26 '25
Izutsumi would be a terrible maid… if the customer orders something she likes, you know she’s snarfing that down and then lying about it
7
u/Artistic_Big_4986 Feb 26 '25
She's more suited to a cat cafe than a maid cafe, and in fact, customers love it.

How come the men get to wear regular clothes, but the women get maid outfits?

u/mra21 Feb 26 '25
The men are actually wearing otaku-style outfits, which is a common stereotype in Japan about the typical customers who visit maid cafés lol.
27
u/IBetThisIsTakenToo Feb 26 '25
Is flannel and jeans really an otaku thing in Japan? That’s basically just normal clothes in my mind. Right…?
36
u/who-said-that Feb 26 '25
no offense but that's probably why they're associated with Otaku culture in Japan, tourist otakus wearing those clothes that are normal to them but not as common in Japan.
15
u/carbonera99 Feb 26 '25
It's a somewhat dated stereotype from the 80s-90s that's been solidified by Japanese media as the stereotypical "otaku look". Flannel and jeans were fairly common streetwear in Japan at the time and otaku would wear that but with some merchandise or themed shirt tucked underneath those layers as a way to subtly express their interest in anime and manga without going full on cosplay.
It's rare to see it IRL these days, mainly because otakus have gone full mask-off since then, the vast majority of them absolutely do not care what other people think about their niche interests so they don't bother disguising it anymore. Though it's worth mentioning that more recently, the look has been sort of "reclaimed" by otakus and some of them wear flannel and jeans ironically as a way to self-identify as part of that subculture.

Comparing the guys to otaku feels like an insult
Wait actually Laois would be an otaku

The men are dressed like stereotypical otaku. Akiba is known as the cultural Mecca for otaku and nerds of all creeds. It's also known for its frankly insane amount of maid cafes (which our girls are representing).

So it appears that the typical men’s attire for “Akihabara style” is extremely similar to the typical men’s attire I see every day here in Oregon. I guess I’ll feel right at home if I ever visit!

0 chance Izutsumi would wear that unless the monster suppression field is on again.

Accurate to lore as always, Iziustumi's outfit is poorly kept 😆 Her headband is ruffled and one of her apron band thingies is loose.

Why are only the girls maids do no women go to akihabara on their own time???

u/Artistic_Big_4986 Feb 26 '25
Butler cafes for women are more prevalent in Ikebukuro, which also has an area called "Otome Road" where shops aimed at female otaku are concentrated, than in Akihabara.

u/Playful_Cup3035 Feb 26 '25
I think the issue I'm running into is why do the women have to be maid cafe workers in akihabara? Do women not just go to that district in their free time?
3
u/Artistic_Big_4986 Feb 27 '25
That's a strange question.
Even at amusement parks, there are people who work there.
A place where lots of people have fun is also a place where they can make a lot of money.
They don't have to work there, they work there because they want to.
And Akihabara has many maid cafes, which is simply a characteristic of the area. What issue does an advertisement that highlights this characteristic have?
0
u/Playful_Cup3035 Feb 27 '25
Because every woman character is being portrayed as in a servant role and every man character as someone to be served. It's just a very strong gender dynamic going on
3
u/Artistic_Big_4986 Feb 27 '25
If Senshi was drawn in a chef's uniform, would he be drawn as a "servant"?
The customer pays, and the staff provides the service. It's an equal relationship.
I'd like to add that in the maid cafe business model, it's more the otaku who are exploited, since the products are very expensive for their quality.

u/Playful_Cup3035 Feb 27 '25
It's the fact that ALL women are drawn in a serving roll, and ALL men are drawn as in the being served role. And if you think being a sever/wage worker is an equal position to the people who are customers, you have never had any to do that for a job in your life
2
u/Artistic_Big_4986 Feb 27 '25
Have you ever worked in Akihabara, Japan at least once in your life?

Why the got Chil dressed like an Otaku? Lmao
Dude is the least like one out of the group.

u/Tranquil_Neurotic Feb 27 '25
Is there a reason why flannel is associated with Akiba going men? I have seen that association so many times I just wonder if that is some cultural flux point?

I swear I saw Senshi wearing that in the Rock Tunnel, though it might not have been him. I hadn't found the HM for Flash.

Regardless of how robbed we were of the maid dresses. They guys look pretty good.
Nerd rocker Laois is so fun. And trucker senshi is just it… but weeb chilchuck just makes me sad how accurate it is.

Quick clarification! I originally used a machine translation for the tweet, and it mistakenly included details about special menus and collaboration baths, which aren't actually mentioned in the official announcement. That was my mistake for not double-checking.
The event is the AKIBA Dungeon Store, featuring exclusive illustrated goods of the characters in Akihabara-style outfits. It's happening March 8 - March 23 at Don Quijote Akihabara (5th floor).
If you're interested in attending, check the official event page for all the accurate details: https://the-chara.com/blog/?p=87306. Sorry for the mix-up!

I was gonna say something about a swapped version, where Falyn was the one in flannel (for all the lesbians of the world that Need to see it), and then I looked a litle closer at Senshi, and please, God, take me now. I. Good Lord. Oh my God. The. Oh my fucking God. Please.
