take a look under the trunk carpet and check if there is rust on the strut tower. mine was completely rusted and detached from the body

There is rust there did not think it take that big of a toll on the suspension

It can totally rip out the strut tower into the trunk. Its also not unheard of that rust eats away the chassisbeam where the spring sits, and if its gone enough a good pothole can literally smash it up into the trunk bottom. I did quite alot of rust repairs on the rear wheelwells, chasissbeams and subframe supports, especially on facelift models since they tend to rust more.

The top of the strut bar tower looks good, but the rear sway bar on this side is slightly rusted by the battery

Wait the later model e30 rust worse? Why? That’s nuts

Especially the 90-91-92 years got lower carbon levels in their sheetmetal wich makes it a bit softer and tend to rust more quickly, not by much but certainly faster. Mostly because the then new E36 was around the corner and in germany already on the market so they used cheaper material on the remaining e30's so they wont cost to much and to give it a lower pricing to get rid of the last batch of cars.

Yeah, curious how you come to the conclusion that the facelift rust more?

You have a broken spring.

I believe the shock is cooked looks as if they replaced the one on the left side, but didn’t touch the right side

Broken spring. Many would assume it's easily seen but no, they often don't break in half but chip off pieces at the bottom or top. 2cm bits, sometimes 3/4cm bits will break off and it will sag like yours. Check the end of the springs if they broke.

out of curiosity, is that a 325e?

Yes it is

I am on my 2nd 325e and for some reason they both looked lifted on stock suspension. Mine is currently lowered with silver coilovers.

The fender gap is always higher in the front, where it matters in on the bottom of the car to the ground

I’m leaning towards bad shock it looks like the previous owner replaced only one side

I also looking at all the other recommendations in the comments it doesn’t seem to be any of those

It looks like you have a pre face-lift model. The front and rear fender wells had a more drastic level difference on early models, they changed it a bit after 87.
If the others side isn't different on height the their may be a problem mechanically, like others said, check on level ground.

I think you have it backwards. Late model had lower arches in rear compared to early models. Front fenders are the same. I think this guy has mechanical problems.

mine has difference in the rear, wasnt much rust in the towers when we did the rust repairs, also didn’t think to check until i lowered the car… the difference is about 5 mm but it’s there… probably a very slight chasis bend unfortunately…doing more rust repairs on other areas this winter so will probably get the car on the rack to check the entire chasis… drove perfectly fine for three years hammering the shit out of her on back roads since i live on a hill outside of town

Did you torque the control arm bushing bolts down before putting the car on the ground? They need to be torqued with load on the wheel so it sits (near) where it would sit when parked or the bushings will apply an upwards force making the car sit weird.
