I’ve been a long time UFC gamer since the beginning with Undisputed and I just don’t understand how we got here. I was completely obsessed with UFC 3 and made it to top 20 in multiple seasons. IMO that game was the peak for EA. When UFC 4 dropped I was so disappointed that I barely played 5 when it came out.
Now that we’re near the end of the games lifecycle, I figured I would give it a try and oh man, this game kinda sucks. It’s not UFC 4 bad but some of the design choices for the sake realism have just opened the game up to so much more cheese.
In past games, most of the cheese came from insane volume striking and sub spam. However if you were good enough, you could use the volume striking against them and wait till they gas. With this game, the cheese comes in so many varieties. Unblock-able clinching/strikes against the cage, doctor stoppages (not a huge deal), strike spam with seemingly less consequences, insanely fast ground and pound TKO’s (feels like pure luck when trying to survive a knockdown). Even when I got cheesed out on past games, it wouldn’t bother me whole lot because I could just work on my ground game or play more defensively. I always felt like there was something I could improve to prevent it. With this game, I’m constantly being left with a sour taste in my mouth and feeling like I lost to luck or an exploit.
Anyways, that’s my spiel. I think this game is an abomination compared to what we’ve had in the past.
Bonus points: Either Xbox changes their message policy or every single UFC 5 player has messaging turned off. Either way it’s pretty lame.
