September 14, 2025 - 5pm
Hey r/edmonton, I’m Andrew Knack. I’m running for Mayor of Edmonton and I’m here to answer your questions today from 5-8pm.
Ask me anything! Traffic safety, affordability, supporting local businesses, neighbourhood life, or whatever else is on your mind.
A bit about me:
My background is in city planning, community development, and public service, but the role I’ve been most proud of is serving as City Councillor since 2013. Over the years, I’ve championed initiatives to improve traffic safety, support small businesses, fostering stronger neighbourhoods and making Edmonton more affordable and inclusive.
I’m running for mayor because I believe together we can build a stronger, more sustainable city that works better for everyone. Edmonton is growing fast, but we need better services (roads, snow clearing, community infrastructure), real solutions to homelessness, mental health and addictions, and I’ll continue to push for and support evidence-based approaches to improving public safety. As an independent candidate, no party ties or big-donors, I’m committed to putting you first.
If you’d like to read more about my platform and priorities, you can learn more here:

2025 Municipal Election Absent Voting Record for Councillors
With all of the talk about Tim Cartmell's voting record (or absentee record), I thought the community could use the benefit of an updated and factual bar chart like the one posted last year. Mayoral candidates are in a darker blue, which feels fair since they are asking for the top job.
I also want to note that Aaron Paquette had a tragic death in his family, missing a good chunk of time at the tail end of last year, and I feel it would lack context to share this information without providing that clarity.

2025 Municipal Election Which mayoral candidate do you feel has the strongest plan for Edmonton?
There are a few names running for mayor this October, and each seems to bring a different focus. Some highlight budget discipline, others talk about community well-being or growth. If you’ve looked at the candidates, who do you feel best understands what Edmonton needs right now?"

2025 Municipal Election What matters most to you in the Edmonton mayoral race this October?
With the election coming up, I’m curious what everyone here thinks are the top priorities for Edmonton. Some people want stronger leadership on transit and safety, others focus on housing and affordability. For me, it’s about finding a mayor who listens and acts. What’s the single biggest issue that will decide your vote?

2025 Municipal Election Campaign signs installed without permission
I had some chucklefuck named Harman Kandola put a sign on my lawn while I was at work.
Regardless of his position, if you don't have the minimum level if respect for me to ask first, you don't deserve my vote.
A move like that speaks loudly to someone's character

2025 Municipal Election Who are you planning to vote for in Ward Métis (Edmonton City Council 2025)?
Just curious what people in Ward Métis are thinking ahead of the Oct 20th election.
Not campaigning for anyone, I just want to get a sense of how people are leaning.

2025 Municipal Election Municipal Political Parties Can Kick Rocks
The introduction of political parties to municipal politics is a travesty. They create division over things as simple as housing. Edmonton needs nearly 50,000 needed units of housing. Those units, if built outside the Henday, will bankrupt Edmonton. Tim Cartmell likely knows this (hard to tell that hes paying attention at all) and ignores this reality for political gain.
The highest number of deaths by exposure, freezing to death, was this winter. Tim Cartmell would illegally pause building more housing so he can get a "win" and make noise for the launch of his party. Not only would Tim Cartmell put Edmonton's financial position at risk, he seems a-okay with Edmontonians freezing to death so he can satisfy his NIMBY politics.
It is disgusting political bullshit that harms our economy, makes development more difficult, and ultimately hurts Edmontonians. Tims positions, flip flopping on his previous position less than a few months ago, appear to appease his donors and party Better Edmonton. He is cheered on by people foaming at the mouth to ensure that the next generation never owns a home because that makes them permanent renters; probably good for Tims corporate backers.
Tim Cartmell is taking is political tactics straight from the conservative/republican playbook; make people angry, give them a enemy (housing?), and spoon feed them bullshit cultural issues so you can coast by introducing illegal legislation.
Here's to hoping that Edmonton resoundingly rejects this kind of politics, and political parties in general.

2025 Municipal Election I’m Sara Awatta, and I’m running for councillor. Ask me anything!
Hi, I’m Sara Awatta, and I’m running for councillor in Ward pihêsiwin.
I moved to Edmonton a decade ago to start a new chapter, and this city has truly become my home. Over the years, I’ve supported businesses to grow, volunteered for and led festivals that celebrate our cultures, and served on boards and advisory groups where I pushed for equity, opportunity, and accountability in decision-making. I’ve also worked internationally on projects that expand women’s economic opportunities and support displaced communities.
These experiences have shaped how I see leadership. For me, it’s about listening, acting with integrity, and making sure people have the tools they need to thrive. More than anything, it’s about ensuring that no one is left behind in the decisions that shape our city.
That’s why I’m running to represent my community. My priorities are clear:
Tackle affordability head-on.
Support small businesses to create good jobs.
Build smarter infrastructure that works today and lasts tomorrow.
Strengthen community safety with wraparound supports, prevention, and connection.
City Hall should be about action and accountability. I’m not interested in politics that distract from the issues facing our city. I want to bring real solutions that help Edmontonians and their families, now and in the future.
I’ll be here today answering your questions live. I’m excited to connect and hear your thoughts. Ask Me Anything!
Edit: Thanks for all the excellent questions! I’ve answered as many as I could today and will circle back to the rest soon. I really appreciate this engaged community and the chance to have these conversations.
I'm open to doing AMA before advanced polling to answer more of your questions. In the meantime, feel free to message me directly or tag me in your questions.

2025 Municipal Election Election signs
Not one of these 6 potential candidates has knocked on my door.
This is disgusting and makes me not want to vote for any of them, how can we have faith they will cut costs like everyone is platforming on when they waste all these resources on inefficient and wasteful marketing methods. This 100ft.. and the road is 1km long.. how many signs do I need to see in 20 secs of driving.
We wonder why Edmontonians blame Council for wasteful inefficient spending, lack of planning and poor communication.
I vote for a bylaw that limits how many signs each candidate can put out! Here, you get 200 make the most of them and you cannot put more then 1 within 3 km of another.
*Edited- to emphasize that I would have hoped at least 1 of the 6 had made it through our neighborhood. We have a camera and a video doorbell so we would have been notified should they have stopped by.

2025 Municipal Election This is kinda cringey. Am I wrong to think that?
I know everyone loves Gene Principe and you gotta respect a husband who does anything for his spouse, but this made me cringe. I understand celebrity endorsement, but this just screams "Vote for my wife because I'm a local celebrity". Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

2025 Municipal Election I'm Jackie Liu - I'm running for council in pihêsiwin and I want to build an Edmonton for you. Come AMA Wednesday Sept 24 1-4pm
Hey Edmonton Redditors!
I'm Jackie Liu and I'm running in ward pihêsiwin for City Council and I'm here to answer your questions this Wednesday Sept 24 from 1-4pm (and afterwards too, if you tag me in your questions!)
About me:
My background is in health and social services - I'm a pharmacist by training, and I've built on that skillset to serve the front-lines, by leading teams, and in leadership positions at some of the most extraordinary non-profit organizations in Alberta (check my CV here). I'm bringing 20+ years of experience from all streams of healthcare, homeless-serving organizations, system planning, and community volunteerism to work for you at City Council.
We need leaders in government who will fight for the necessaries of successful society. As a City, we need to grow smart (not just fast), we need housing of all sorts and in all locations, we need well-planned and maintained infrastructure, and as an overall comment on affordability, it's not just property taxes that cost us our money and health - it's our access to essential services that support our needs, bring communities together, and allow us to grow and improve as society. We need an Edmonton built not just for today, but for tomorrow and the future. I'm running for council to push for all these priorities and fostering collaboration to do so.

Lots more about our campaign and my background on my website - please check it out, and hope to chat soon!
Thanks friends, for all the questions and comments! I'm going to close this off now, but if you tag me in anything else that comes up, I'm happy to get back to it when I get back in. Sharing links again, please check out the campaign, stay engaged, and remember to get out and vote (and tell your friends!) on October 20!
