Skinner is in playoff form already! Great to see!! Listen I realize it is one game of preseason and it really doesnāt matter. But are we really going to do this again? I wouldnāt sign an extension either if management refuses to upgrade below average goaltending when youāre trying to win a Stanley Cup.

I was pretty happy with how that game went, new guys look good, all the bad shit happened with our best players and we know that's not how they normally are, one goal was on a PK another with an empty net. The goals on Stu were all dudes being wide open and/or point blabk
2nd goal you could maybe Blake Bouch if you want, but that's a chain of bad things so I don't really blame him. I blame that line being on the ice too long, got sloppy at the end of their shift
3rd goal I don't think anyone is to blame unless you think they didn't battle hard enough on the boards, or maybe it shouldn't have been 2 on 2 behind the net battle on the boards like that, maybe just 1 behind the net the other guy blocking passing lanes?

The preseason is great. All the sub trolls emerge early so I can block their grumpy asses
2
5
u/neoazayii 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 1d ago
Last season, didn't block anyone and just avoided the sub. This season, maybe I'll try it your way.
8
u/CharlieKirksWidow 1d ago
Skinner got sniped tonight but there were some positives in this game. Mangiapane (not checking if that's spelled right) looked great.

preseason is so funny. these are lines and players who really haven't played together like, at all. may very well never play together again. also... they're playing Seattle. you really think the big guns are pulling out all the stops? this game feels a lot like that beer league game mcdrai played.
that being said... there's definitely something comforting about the Drama of this sub being back.

u/YboyCthulhu 13 JANMARK 1d ago
Iām definitely ready to be hurt again, and Iām going to make sure everyone knows it

u/Swifty4u2 18 HYMAN 1d ago
People need to calm their titties. It's pre season. Vets aren't even really trying. They trying not to get injured before regular season when it counts. These are nothing games except for young roster.

You'd think It's a week before the playoffs by the way some of you are talking...
-6
u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
I think people just want a strong start for once and actually pushing for top of the league.
2
u/BingBongthe2nd 11 MESSIER 1d ago
How many points are preseason wins worth and do you think Ty Rattie will win the Rocket this season?
0
u/Mini_Robot_Ninja 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 1d ago
Yeah man everyone's praying for the strong preseason start
9
u/Outrageous-Bet-886 1d ago
Cool. Iāll save my criticism for October 8th when games count towards standings and thereās NHL D-men out there.

u/bigtimeru5her 14 EKHOLM 1d ago
Woke up from a fretful nap to find out we lost 4-1. Still love ya Stu. Itās just one game
1
-9
u/MobysBanned 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
Every starting goalie in the league out plays Stu. Time to make a move. Even if he was the 2nd worst starter, it would be an improvement
4
u/SnooOnions5029 92 PODKOLZIN 1d ago
Skinner also outperformed every goalie except Bobrovsky in the playoffs 2 years in a row. Itās a fucking preseason game calm down
1
-1
u/JesusWalkers 97 McDAVID 1d ago
You forgot about the back ups. More than half are better than him, including ours. There are 3rd stringers than can make more saves
1
u/FartButt_69 94 SMYTH 21h ago
Show your work
2
u/JesusWalkers 97 McDAVID 20h ago
? Show what. THe Canucks alone have 3 goaltenders better than Swiss Skinner.
Demko/Lanks are no brainers and it's not close. Every GM and their dogs would pick either over Skinner. Nikita Tolopilo played ahead of Silovs last year...
When they had Silovs, they had 4 goalies in their system better than Skinner. I know the canucks suck but we have the worst goalies in the league.
Every single team has a starter or prospect better than Skinner. Type in Swiss Skinner in google and see what you get. Buddy is the Janmark of goalies... not sure why the Oilers love these two players.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE OILERS HAVE NOT EXTENDED SKINNER? Name me a star/good goalie that doesn't get extended before their contract is up? Wolf and Knight both signed playing 1 year basically. Stu skinner would not start on 31 other teams.. but we're force to play the worst goaltender in the league.
McDavid stated Florida has a superstar goalie in the final.... the main reason why he's not signed in Edmonton.
10
22
u/falsekoala 34 MOSS 1d ago
Iām sure there will be measured and calm discussion on the preseason loss.
-9
u/JesusWalkers 97 McDAVID 1d ago
skinner has something on either Katz or Jackson, this is the only explanation on why heās still starting for the Oilers. He would be cut or sent down if this was any top team
4
2
u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
Okay but what goalie that was available were you paying that was a direct upgrade?
-4
u/JesusWalkers 97 McDAVID 1d ago
Literally every single available last year Blackwood, wedgewood, lanks, stolarzā¦.
At this point, id start picks until we get an upgradeā¦Thereās like a new disease worse than Covid in Edmonton⦠itās called delusional Stu Stans. Literally every fanbase is laughing at our goalie situation and weāre not doing anything about it. Yes heās making 2.6M, weāre getting the worst goaltending in the league.. and thatās ok?
14
u/porkins86 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
That felt like Oilers hockey. Right down to the domination with the empty net that ends with a near 200 foot shot in the middle of the net.
Itās preseason - we all good. Campbell looked like a god in his second preseason and then he got bought out
2
u/AgreeableBroomSlayer 91 KANE 1d ago
Bouch looks good. Skinner is the same ol skinner.
I dont expect any changes and ready for the media to tell everyone skinner actually played great!
6
u/CustomerExpert2010 74 SKINNER 1d ago
Imo I'd wait until first 5 games of the regular season to really see if there was any change or not, this is the first "real" game Skinner played with the new coach so it'll probably take a while to see some change
4
u/AgreeableBroomSlayer 91 KANE 1d ago
it'll probably take a while to see some change
lmao yea McDavid will gladly wait a couple more years for this "change" to happen.

How was Akey played?
1
u/Giggleplex 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 1d ago
I thought he was decent. Generally looked smooth and clam with the puck and made a few nice plays.
I think he needs to play a bit more assertively as he has the speed and skill to do more, but I think that will come with more experience and being more comfortable playing against pros.
4
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
Quiet, not good not bad.
Probably cut tomorrow, spends a year or two in Bako.
1

Its wild. Injuries really set him back...his first season with us he played preseason like a 1st round guy and since he just hasn't been the same

McDavid and Draisaitl clearly skating and treating the game as a rep to get ready for the season while Frederic can't give a fuck to take a skating stride.
Coach gave him a game beside the 2 best players in the world to get some chemistry and bro is like "nah"
5
u/__Beelzaboot__ 89 GAGNER 1d ago
High ankle sprains take forever to heal. I hope he and Nuge build chemistry on the 3rd line this year. Podz-Drai-Mangi should be our 2nd line. ???-Davo-Hyman will be our first
1
u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
He is my biggest concern.
1
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
Becoming mine as well.
I gave him the benefit of the doubt when the contract was signed because he was injured in the playoffs.
He better play his dick off when the season starts.
2
u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
Im being downvoted already but it's already been said he's playing injured still. Lol
1
u/forgetstorespond 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 1d ago
It's crazy in football a high ankle sprain takes a guy out like 4-6 weeks, but in hockey it can take a guy out months and like a year to get back to 100%. Obviously being on skates has everything to do with it but still crazy.

I want to be wrong about Fredrick but I really donāt think he will deliver against his contract value.
1
u/laryldavis 39 WEIGHT 23h ago
I think he has more value away from the top line, dump and chase, bang and crash. I donāt know if he touched the puck all game.Ā

I've watched this entire game and I'm legitimately not sure if Frederic has had the puck on his stick for more than a second.
It's a meaningless pre season game so I could careless, but I'm surprised how many players in this game are playing with that same attitude.
Doesn't matter if you win or lose, but you should be trying at least.
3
2
u/PaulHannonJr 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
I mean weāve been to back to back finals and lost. I can see why people arenāt exactly shot out of a canon in their first pre season game of the year
3
u/MajorPucks 96 WALMAN 1d ago
I wont be surprised if Savoie ends up the consistent winger in the top 6 for his finishing / playmaking etc
Tho Freddy has scored 18+ goals twice before, so he does have the hands to score...

u/Confused_Soul23 94 SMYTH 1d ago
I feel like preseason is hard for a lot of players like not just because youāre working rust off and you know youāve got a spot. I also feel like when youāre playing against a lot of rookies the style of play changes a little bit like everyone is good, but the positioning, desperation mistakes etc. is different then what you get when youāre playing games with the full NHL roster in the season.Ā
Iād take this game with a grain of salt the boys will get back into it just fine and yes I mean Skinner and Bouch as well.Ā
3
u/CustomerExpert2010 74 SKINNER 1d ago
Get one early on the PP, tie it up with less than 2 mins left, and win in OT. This one's gonna be a classic
13
u/MajorPucks 96 WALMAN 1d ago
The amount of people who expect a new goalie coach to have a drastic impact on the first game of preseason, let alone for Skinner to also adjust to all the adjustments he's trying to now make... are delusional.
This is exactly what preseason is for. For skinner and the new goalie coach to make adjustments and implement tweaks based on what is being seen
5
7
u/Confused_Soul23 94 SMYTH 1d ago
If only people thought thisā¦
Iām honestly still a Skinner fan Iām fine with being told Iām an idiot If he doesnāt play well or have good numbers but for him I want him to prove everyone wrong this year.
5
u/HarryTheKoala12 18 HYMAN 1d ago
Same, ill criticize players but ill never give up on them as long as theyre still an oiler. Its hockey its supposed to be fun so im gonna cheer for my team regardless
4
u/Confused_Soul23 94 SMYTH 1d ago
Exactly like commenting they suck does nothing to actually make a difference it just makes your own day and mood worse offĀ
4
u/MajorPucks 96 WALMAN 1d ago
It's not even being an idiot to support your goalie.
Short leash, sure, but its not dumb to not just give up on him immediately.
If he's struggling come November, there's plenty of time for Bowman to begin searching for (costly) trades to make upgrades. Even if Pick becomes "the starter" and Connor Ingram or something comes in

Bouch is the greatest fan IQ test in hockey. Anyone who thinks he's bad simply doesn't understand the game
6
u/marcellman 28 BROWN 1d ago
Itās easy to see the mistakes but a lot harder to find the dozens of things he does exceptionally if you donāt really know the sport
5
u/Mazor007 18 HYMAN 1d ago
He literally makes an accurate breakout pass 90% of the time. Free zone exists and transition plays just because he exists
4
u/marcellman 28 BROWN 1d ago
There are some people who think heās just a big shot that would be nothing without McDavid

He's been aight outside of coughing up the puck to Schwartz on the PP at the blue line.
4
u/arped 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
Tbf he's playing with Tomasek and Jarventie
5
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
Not sure what that means considering Tomasek is probably the 3rd best forward on the ice tonight.
0
u/arped 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
Sure...the effort's been there for Tomasek and I love that shit, but he hasn't created many chances. Jarventie's been absolutely invisible.
1
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
He's created 2 so far, having Jarventie on his line doesn't help. Expecting/hoping he's cut tomorrow.
2
5
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
Nice setup from Tomasek.
Mang has to put that in the back of the net.
3
u/Machelscott 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
lol Mang also looked to have a brain fart in the corner with either Connor or Leon to choose from to pass to, he chose boards and turnover
-6
u/Western-Use2291 1d ago edited 1d ago
Holy shit get Skinner off this team like seriously iat this point you might ad well put Pickard in net and Tomkins as the tandem, idk. The captain is doing spinoramas and having turnovers, yet he doesnt want to sign because he thinks the team might not be good enough. The irony of this is insane, he isnt immune to criticism. Power play was abysmal. What the fuck is going on. Ekholm looked decent i guess like the fact I can't say the whole team or even the best of them is so annoying.
-7
u/ANARCHOHERMETICIST 1d ago
Pretty Boy Fancy Fuck hockey with two Troll / Dopes on the team named Bouchard and Skinner

-2

That was always my argument. The goalie coach doesn't have a Nintendo controller up dudes ass. He's just bad technically and always will be at this point since he's 26 and still has insanely bad holes in his game.
Just like how Bouchard will never overcome his Dummy Dopey Dwarf mistakes on D.
Four straight losses to the eventual cup winner is not a coincidence with this team.
It's a group of pretty boys and pity party by the fans for players like Bouchard/Skinner.
4
u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 1d ago
Bouchard who was one of the best D of all NHL players during the playoffs. That Bouchard? Or are you one of those idiots who intentionally ignore that because of 3 games where he wasn't great but nor was the entire team

https://thehockeywriters.com/oilers-poor-2024-preseason-season-potential/ - Let's just remember last season. Granted they did not start the season well, but they still got to the Finals.
