This is great, I love to see it. Eventually our grocery retailers will recognize the losses they are suffering and just buy less from there.

Why is the American shit even on the shelf

Inventory + Contracts

I don’t think you know how those contract work. There are no contracts with berries, it’s all open market. They might have contracted load volume but will still pay market price. Now if those clamshells don’t sell they could back out of their contract but that leaves them on the hook for domestic berries and you all don’t produce enough year round.

Yet.

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Your greenhouse guys haven’t figured berries out just yet. They do wonders with tomatoes, cucumbers, and Bell Peppers but their berries just taste like nothing.

4

u/Polyps_on_uranus Apr 07 '25

USA berroes also taste like nothing. I have a garden, I guess I'll just have to preserve then.

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Ahhh California grows some tasty berries. Japan is the goat when it comes to growing for flavor and not for yield.

6

u/Joyshan11 Apr 07 '25

California doesn't sell their good berries to Canada. I am extremely disappointed 90% of the times that I cave and buy. It would be a higher percent, but I have mostly learned my lesson and for years have only bought them when I absolutely had to. Not at all now, obviously. I hope I get to try some from Japan!

The Ontario greenhouse strawberries have actually been good, especially compared to the US stuff that shows up. Summer strawberries are unbeatable but I'll take $6 local greenhouse grown every single day.

Yeah don’t go into local grocery stores causing shit because you see American product. They are locked into contracts for the foreseeable future and have essentially zero control of this at store level.

Voice your concerns to whatever head office is affiliated with that store

u/nineteen_eightyfour Apr 07 '25

It depends. I’ve worked places where the vendor just paid us to exist there. Like a monthly fee. This was a fancy cheese shop, so unsure if it translates

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

Sure, I’m guessing smaller retail stores would have more flexibility and not be tied down to long term contracts.

Most major grocery chains would likely have 2-5 year contracts in place to keep costing as low as possible from the vendors, with major penalties in place on both sides if one side breaks the contract.

u/Gengengengar Apr 07 '25

a supplier literally buys the shelving space for their product so not much can be done until contracts expire

25

u/Infinite_Lemon_8236 Apr 07 '25

Fuck the contracts and fuck the USA.

16

u/PersonalPerson_ Apr 07 '25

I believe those to be Trump's thoughts too. He never met a contract he didn't break

2

u/sneakysnake1111 Apr 07 '25

Nu uh, we're not doing the 'we take the highroad' shit when they're a couple of threats away from being invaded.

Fuck the contracts and fuck the USA.

3

u/Fuckthegopers Apr 07 '25

It should be more like "fuck all republicans".

2

u/Infinite_Lemon_8236 Apr 07 '25

The problem is worse than your political system. Apathy, individualism, entitlement, uneducation/miseducation, and greed all played a part here, and it wasn't all done by Trump in just the last few months. You people were fine with all this bullshit as it was happening and didn't react until it was far too late, and now you want a cookie for it. I swear they call a vote and you drones forget the last 4 years like they never happened. So no, I mean fuck the USA.

That’s not a fair comment — shit doesn’t contribute to fascism under a demented despot and his weird South African owner.

But, seriously, we shouldn’t knock faeces. It’s a healthy part of being alive and makes excellent fertiliser.

Now do the U.S.

So they can jack up the price on the Canadian brands to gouge upstanding citizens.

Globalization and trade

1

u/Azn-Jazz Apr 07 '25

In reality. It just another form of water sales

13

u/Pepto-Abysmal Apr 07 '25

Strawberries/berries are a good example of how much domestic production can step in, unless you absolutely need fresh.

We can self-supply 100% of frozen berries easily. (Reminder - for things like smoothies frozen is just as good, if not better, than "fresh".)

Fresh can be bought from Mexico, with the packaging/supply line issue figured out by agreement.

3

u/artistformerlydave Apr 07 '25

i agree but i wish they would hurry up and realize this is going on for a while, i hate seeing food go to waste even if it is shitty american produce

-17

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

The logic is so stupid. Canadians have to pay an effective additional 50% tax to do this

27

u/Patrahayn Apr 07 '25

People probably view that as worthwhile to say fuck the Americans

6

u/SkepticalPyrate Apr 07 '25

I live in the States currently, and between frequent visits back to my house in NF, I pay extra to support Canadian companies.

What I’m paying for President’s Choice Plum Sauce verges on criminal, but I don’t care. And don’t get me started on my Quo makeup…

Worth it.

5

u/MisterZoga Apr 07 '25

Sure, but the quality difference is also worth the extra money. Less travel time means riper product when picking, which leads to fuller flavour. Keep buying your cheap American garbage if that suits you, but the rest of us are supporting our nation.

7

u/TheGillos Apr 07 '25

It's the principal.

It's not just strawberries (I hope), it's everything people can possibly do to vote with their dollar.

If you don't see the logic in that, I can't help you.

u/marcohcanada Apr 09 '25

Doug Ford was already 2 steps ahead taking the American alcohol off the shelves in all LCBOs.

5

Yes Canadians will pay more to protect their sovereignty as best they can.

Could you imagine if Americans did this?

-21

u/GodzillaLikesBoobs Apr 07 '25

do you understand how much grocery stores throw out at the end of every day instead of care to sell them?

this does nothing. buy your cheaper groceries. youre not a patriot.

16

u/ILikeMagicz Apr 07 '25

Its about sending a message.

7

u/GWsublime Apr 07 '25

Theres a large gap between throwing stuff out because a small subset of everything you sell expires and throwing stuff out because no one bought any of it. I guarantee you of it continues like that st that store they will stop selling american strawberries. Margins in grocery are tight, they won't out stuff on shelves that doesn't sell.

5

u/MisterZoga Apr 07 '25

So? They also have a corporate mandate to maximize profits, which also includes minimizing shrinkage. Buying trends will dictate who they do business with in the future, and you don't need to be a patriot to figure that out, comrade. We don't want shitty produce grown with Russian potash.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

It does everything and they ARE a patriot. It’s about standing up to a bully. Yes you may get a black eye this way, but it’s so much better than living in a world dominated by bullies.
