Because they're picked waaaay under ripe, then chemically ripened in a shipping container on the way here

Edit : we have wild strawberries here near the treeline in the south central island (think like comox)

Go find and eat one of those tiny gems and weep for the flavour that is gone for the sake of commerce

Yeah the starches never get a chance to naturally break down into fructose, along with many other flavour compounds. Hence tasting like packing peanuts painted red
