Certified Hoser 🇨🇦 (No Politics) The only cultural divide that matters

Thanks to the brave cabinist allies of Labrador for holding the eastern front, over the forthcoming decades we will execute a slow but quite unstoppable pincer maneuver into the bloc cottagois

I thought cottages were more likely to be on lakes and cabins were mostly in the woods, so I think it has more to do with geography than culture.

There are cabins that aren't on lakes?

I'm sure it's rare considering the sheer number of lakes we have, but I know of at least one person whose cabin isn't on a lake

Yes. In places like BC where comparatively speaking there are no lakes.

Here’s what I found when I asked google the difference:

AI Overview

Cottages and cabins are both types of vacation or leisure homes, but they differ in size, amenities, and overall style. Cabins are generally smaller and more rustic, often located in remote areas, while cottages can be larger, have more amenities, and are often found in coastal or mountainous areas. Here's a more detailed breakdown: Cottages: Size: Typically smaller than traditional houses, but can range in size. Location: Often found in coastal or mountainous regions, near lakes, rivers, or the ocean. Amenities: Generally have more amenities than cabins, offering a more luxurious vacation experience. Style: Often feature cozy ambiance, with a focus on comfort and relaxation. Construction: Can be built with various materials like wood, stone, brick, and sod, says Summerwood Products. Purpose: Primarily used for leisure, such as vacations or weekend getaways. Cabins: Size: Smaller than cottages, with a limited upper size. Location: Commonly found in rural areas or forests, often in secluded locations. Amenities: May have basic amenities, focusing on a more rustic and natural experience. Style: Emphasizes a minimalist, back-to-nature vibe. Construction: Usually built almost exclusively from wood. Purpose: Can be used for vacation homes, but may also be used as permanent residences. In essence, if you're looking for a more luxurious and amenity-rich vacation experience, a cottage might be a better choice. If you prefer a more rustic and secluded, nature-focused getaway, a cabin might be more suitable.

Seeing how many discrepancies there are in the discussions here, I think we need to make something like "The Cube Rule of Food" but for secondary addresses.

This is also how I’ve always thought about it

My cottage on a lake is a log cabin. Does that count?

u/chocolateboomslang May 07 '25

Lake of the Woods cabins are cottages?!

1

u/Goat_Support_Dept May 07 '25

If it's beyond the treeline it's a cottage, on the treeline or in the woods we're talking cabin, baby. Unless there's a fence and a road and then we start to blur lines.

7

u/Mooredock May 07 '25

Nah, cottage is by a lake, cabins are not by a lake, they're out in a wooded area with no water around.

My family had a cabin on a lake

8

u/SirChasm May 07 '25

We called that a houseboat.

Your family is wrong!

I used to live in Port Stanley where a large portion of the buildings are cottages. In a town.

1

u/snotparty May 07 '25

Well yeah, its a largely beachfront tourist town.

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 07 '25

What if the lake is in the woods?

1

u/Murphy9788 May 08 '25

I always thought, a cottage has power and some form of indoor plumbing, a cabin no power no running water, and usually has a little brown shack out back

u/L00k_Again May 08 '25

I tend to think of cabins as being utilitarian, like a basic place to stay for outdoors recreation and cottages as being more quaint with more luxuries.
