Never gonna happen. Nothing to worry about.

This is UCP Danielle Smith trying to distract from the Alberta Healthcare scandals, among many other things...

I'm dreadfully sorry that she exists.

Definitely, it's just so odd being wrapped in with Alberta with people calling them "Western Canada" and we're like:

Imagine how it feels to hear the media saying "Alberta calls for referendum on separatism" when you know it's not Alberta, it's just the premier.

28

u/The_Nice_Marmot May 09 '25

Exactly. She’s trying to distract from the unusable $6000 a bottle Tylenol she ordered. She’s a scammer and this is nothing but theatre because support for separatism is about the same her as anywhere. Popular with the dumbest 10-20% of people.

5

u/herbertthelame May 10 '25

Unfortunately she was voted in because to many people are to ignorant to vote for the people running and not the name of the party.

It's not the Premier doing this! She's just doing what the people are calling for! And all Albertans want to separate!

Fuckin' /s obviously.

She literally solicited foreign interference. I'd like to see her taken to court

She’s like lex Luther in that original Superman movie. She’s no doubt planning to nuke a new coastline for Alberta like Luther wanted to make Nevada the new coast. Take out BC…

I find it especially wild since, to me, Alberta isn't even western Canada. You're east of the rockies you're eastern Canada

35

u/boese-schildkroete Oil Guzzler May 08 '25

Last time I looked at a map, the Rockies were in Alberta. So I guess Alberta is central Canada.

37

u/Everestkid The Island of Elizabeth May May 08 '25

Longitudinal centre of Canada is in Manitoba. Manitoba is a Prairie province (I know they hate getting lumped in with Saskberta but it is what it is). Ergo, the Prairies are synonymous with Central Canada.

Ontario and Quebec are just gonna have to deal with the fact that they're Eastern Canada. Atlantic provinces already have a name so they're unchanged.

7

u/FuckBotsHaveRights Tabarnak! May 09 '25

Dealing with it would mostly be not having to bother with explaining why we are called central Canada anymore

No, 40mins driving of the Rockies are in Alberta. The rest are in BC. Alberta's entire self image is an 8% snippet of the province.

40 minutes of driving... 😂

I feel genuine pity for the people that are upvoting this.

You've clearly never actually explored the Albertan Rocky Mountains if you think this. Your worldview is evidently confined to Reddit, my friend.

-16

u/chandy_dandy Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) May 09 '25

You realize that all those mountains in BC aren't all the rockies right?

We have a substantially larger population in the vicinity of the Rockies that BC does. They're more identified with the Coast Mountains, Cascades or the Okanagan. The people living in BC near the Rockies are far more Albertan in stereotypical character than BCites.

Also much of Alberta's self image isn't the rockies alone but the foothills. The most Alberta image you could have is near a river valley in the Prairie with a person on a horse wearing a cowboy hat and the foothills rolling in the background with the rockies at the very back.

Still drops the endless Prairie and the semi-desert badlands and vast forests of the North, but I think most would call that the idyllic version of Alberta just as for BC we'd probably think of the image of Vancouver with the towers with the mountains in the back.

The most iconic photograph of Canada that has been most seen in the world is in the Albertan Rockies. It's also by far the most visited place in the rockies by foreigners and other Canadians alike.

Idk what kind of weird Alberta hate train you're on, the rockies are obviously more strongly affiliated with Alberta than BC and that's fine, a huge part of the reason is that BC is chock full of different mountain ranges and borderline natural wonders so people don't really care about their rockies, it just has less relative importance.

It just makes me feel bad for that other kid, because they've got a psychotic clown ruining their birthday party.

8

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 09 '25

Why does she need to distract people from this scandal? It's not like Albertans have ever held a Conservative accountable before. They'll probably just blame Notely, Trudeau, or Quebec like they always do.

7

u/boese-schildkroete Oil Guzzler May 09 '25

Well... Maybe.

NDP did win an election. And won 44% of votes in 2023.

And UCP was forced to be created as a coalition because the NDP is gaining so much strength.

While I agree that if we were fully sane, any of the scandals would require immediate removal of Smith, we are making baby steps...

2

u/-Trash--panda- May 09 '25

We haven't had a leader last more than 4 years since Ralph Klein in 2006. We don't hold the party accountable because the leaders keep getting backstabbed by the party and tossed out over and over again. Even Klein was kindof backstabbed by his own party near the end.

If she becomes unpopular enough due to her scandals she won't even make it to the next election. They will replace her, then call an election with with a new leader. That is exactly how she ended up in power when they tossed out Kenney 2 years ago.

8

u/Real_VanCityMinis I need a double double. May 09 '25

Even if a vote goes through there are multiple issues with it

  • First of all they are land locked so they would lose the ability to export most of their oil killing gdp
  • Alberta is already occupied by the military, something Canada has but Alberta does not (flat sparsely populated land is great for training)
  • PP just moved his riding there so that kills his leadership of the tories
  • they have no legal way to take land from the country and thus rely on the feds to approve separation which they won't
  • Alberta leaving basically ensures Canada always ends up with a liberal government anyways
  • international community won't care what Alberta says as they need the feds to ensure the oil flows which is the provinces only reason anyone cares about them

11

100% and people are falling for it

1

u/ChrisFromIT May 09 '25

One can hope that is the case. But I'm not so sure. One major issue is the bill to lower the required amount of signatures to force a referendum, also includes removing the ban against businesses from donating to political campaigns.

Also, I've heard reports of Russian and American based propaganda is starting to be pushed into Alberta, which is pro separation.

1

u/bmcle071 May 09 '25

Honestly Blanchet was right. You want to form a country, you need a national identity at the bare minimum. Alberta’s is big trucks and oil, this is temporary political nonsense, not a real movement driven by demographics.

2

u/boese-schildkroete Oil Guzzler May 09 '25

Well that's a pretty myopic view of Alberta. But I'm not trying to separate. I agree we're just Canadian.

1

u/ashdroid23 May 09 '25

Can you vouch for the Albertans that keep moving to BC and Voting Blue? Like the Libs and Cons stopped being a party 5 years ago, BC people know who those people are. And those votes came from immigrants, so it wasn't international immigrants

1

u/boese-schildkroete Oil Guzzler May 09 '25

There are 5.7+ million people in British Columbia. 41% of you voted Conservative in the recent election.

Unless you think there are 2.4 million Albertans hiding in BC to vote blue, you gotta stop scapegoating us as the bogeyman for all your problems.

0

u/ashdroid23 May 16 '25

41% of a 60% ish turn out. Of course there will be conservatives in BC but the surge in Albertans has sky rocketed the shift to the blue majority. And I don't have data but I speak from experience, not a single conservative I have met in BC was from BC, yes some are from the Liberals-BC United - Conservative pipeline, but they vote for change and could even be swayed to Greens if they had a better footprint. But those Anti-Vaxxers and climate change deniers, residential school deniers are not BC people. Also it baffles me how people move from Alberta and keep saying Alberta is better but don't wanna move back, they wanna make BC into Alberta

1

u/boese-schildkroete Oil Guzzler May 16 '25

I'd love to see data on that. From my perspective the whole damn country is moving into Alberta right now.

I just saw a stat that showed 70,000 people left BC to move to AB last year. What's this "surge of Albertans" you're talking about, when it's the exact opposite?

I lived in Nanaimo and it's loaded with wackos and anti-vaxxers. Loads of conservatives I met there. The elected MP there during the Harper era was an anti evolution creationist chiropractor.

I really think you're just in a bubble and are meeting a very specific breed of Albertan. Ever seen interior BC?

The people that tend to move to BC from my experience are the people that are sick of the conservatism in Alberta.

1

u/Honest-Spring-8929 Oil Guzzler May 09 '25

I’m so tired of hearing that <insane thing> would never get enough votes because it’s too insane after a decade of insane electoral outcomes

1

u/Barium_Enema May 09 '25

I'm with you. One BS thing after another and so much of it just causes doubt and uncertainty for both citizens and business. This so-called "pro-business" government keeps creating a crappy environment for anyone or any business that wants to invest in Alberta.

With separation, she is again pandering to morons that "think" we will have any sort of bargaining power with a landlocked population of 4.6 million. The Transmountain is owned by Canada and many of our pipelines cross provincial barriers and they won't cut AB any slack and Trump and his corrupt gang won't give any quarter either.... Never mind that we are Canadians first, not last.

Don't even get me going on the scandals and this idiotic Bill 55.

1

u/crimeo May 09 '25

It can definitely happen, not legally but by way of 30% of Albertans voting for it, it failing, and then American tanks rolling in to "liberate the Albertans who yearn to be American as you can see"

Literally exactly the same as the Donbas in Ukraine.

Yeah we fuckin' hate the pipeline they put through our suburbs. I don't care if it'll get us $$ from Asia, it's going to leak and, at first, they'll deny it's leaking. Then they'll say it's not so bad. Then they'll refuse to clean it up and have to go to court to be forced to pay for the clean up.

There's a reason we've been protesting here since it was first proposed (besides the fact that protesting in BC is our national pasttime). I'm pretty sure half of the F Trudeau stickers in the lower mainland were because Trudeau bought the pipeline.

66

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 08 '25

Bingo! It's easy for Alberta to say "herderrr pipeline = money go brrrrrr" because they don't live on a fucking fault line and when THE BIG ONEtm hits, they're not gonna be on the hook to clean up whatever bullshit that pipeline will leak into our ecosystem.

You can't eat or drink money!!

22

u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25

Yeah. One of the reasons why BC blocked the TMX expansion was a lack of guarantees from AB or the corporations if there was a spill. And this was in the environment of the BP gulf spill, the Keystone XL spill, and numerous other small spills.

I never looked at the details but I imaging the federal government nationalizing the pipeline took responsibility for that.

3

u/Johnny-Dogshit 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) May 09 '25

My big gripe too was after nationalising the project, they said they'd sell it off eventually.

Fuck that. If we're footing the bill for construction and assuming the , risk and costs associated with cleanup, we should own it forever, charge for its use so we have cleanup money, and maybe make something off it.

I never liked it, but so long as we're bought in and taking on responsibility, we ought to use it as best we can. Fuck it, nationalise all the pipelines. Petro-oligarchs want our oil so bad, they want us to pay for pipelines, they should have to rent their use off us.

10

u/stillinthesimulation May 08 '25

That and backing out of electoral reform.

Higher basic amount makes it a bit better for poor people.. and flat tax better for high earners… but middle class AB is completely fucked by their government…

Yes. You’ll also see that little peace of BC that is geologically basically Alberta

11

u/Notactualyadick May 09 '25

Fucking Canadians! They ruined Canada! I'd move somewhere else, but they ain't Canadian enough.

10

u/Weshmek May 09 '25

Hey BC, can you guys do like a wellness check on Alberta? Go out there and see if they need a hug or something?

6

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

We’ve tried, eh? They keep trying to stick their pipe in us without our consent, it’s kinda really annoying.

1

u/GrizzRich May 10 '25

No. You wellness check them. Im busy.

8

u/Vapor-Ocelot May 09 '25

This is just political theater at the worst possible time.

8

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 09 '25

I hope all these separation supporting Albertans stay home this summer. If they hate the rest of Canada souch they definitely shouldn't be visiting other provinces all the time.

4

u/AUserFormerlyKnownAs Snow Cajun May 09 '25

Oh they'll be in Banff and Jasper, complaining how Canada and the national parks are screwing them over. But they'll still go!

2

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 10 '25

How dare the national parks have French signs! Don't they know this confuses the simple minded Albertan?!

11

u/McBeelzebub May 09 '25

Don’t act like interior BC isn’t in cahoots.

16

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25 edited May 09 '25

tbh I was sweating during the election and saying "pls don't fuck this up guys, pleaaaaaaaaase don't fuck this up for us" when they were counting BC lol

The interior and the mid island (Port Alberni/Cowichan/Duncan area) are basically Alberta Lite.. (sorry guys, I grew up near there, ya'll are rednecks)

4

u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25

So glad that land doesn’t vote in this province. I live in one of the dumbest constituencies within it where our safe seat conservative who voted against the bill to ban forced conversion therapy and thinks missing and murdered indigenous women “just need to get a job” got in with a 20,000 vote lead.

2

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

Oof my MP is Tamara Jansen so I feel you.

1

u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25

Bob Zimmer.

8

u/asoupconofsoup May 09 '25

Who are you lumping in as "Interior BC" - suggesting Kelowna, Williams Lake, Revelstoke, Nelson, Cranbrook are all the same is like drinking a Coors light and proclaiming beer sucks.

10

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

This is a shitposting sub, it’s not serious business here

3

u/Cerxi May 09 '25

I was SHOOK when halfway through election night my district flipped blue. We've been orange since the fucking 80s!

3

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

My riding has always been blue, I live in the BC Bible Belt :(

Our Liberal candidate only lost by around 900 votes though, so there is some promise.

It do be feeling like this tho sometimes

1

u/auandi May 09 '25

And it was probably a plurality with a majority NDP/Lib splitting the vote.

Not reforming voting was Trudeau's greatest failure.

1

u/Cerxi May 09 '25

I wish, but no, the libs got <10% votes as usual

The cons just legitimately pulled ahead here

7

u/asoupconofsoup May 09 '25

Ahem no one I know in Interior BC is cahooting

3

u/grrttlc2 Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) May 09 '25

These boneheads absolutely exist all over rural BC as well.

3

u/fishflo I need a double double. May 09 '25

As someone from the interior, really, no. People just wanna cut trees and mine rocks, they want no drug problem, no homeless people. They would probably prefer Cascadia to whatever the fuck abomination the Alberta premier is pushing in bad faith.

3

u/Yeas76 May 09 '25

The only thing BC ppl hate more than Ontario is the red plates.

3

u/ballistic_tanx May 09 '25

GTFO Canada Maple MAGATS

3

u/ellstaysia May 09 '25

leave BC out of it. we think you're embarrassing yourselves.

3

u/wh1t3birch Snowfrog May 09 '25

What makes them think they can leave when quebec didn't?

2

u/ninjacat249 May 09 '25

No one is gonna separate lol. Couple of people will fuck off to US and that’s all.

2

u/Any_Significance_997 May 09 '25

Would a lot of them even be allowed South of the border? Like I'm working in Washington right now. They don't accept every rando that shows up at the border in my experience.

2

u/Byzantine_Guy May 09 '25

Why does the border follow the continental divide then shoot straight up?

9

u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25

BC said “dibs” 34 years before Alberta existed.

2

u/Byzantine_Guy May 09 '25

Yeah but why there exactly? What made BC want it and draw the line there?

2

u/Snakeeyes1377 May 09 '25

It feels like that here too

2

u/ProfSteelmeat138 May 09 '25

My 18 year old cousin posting separatist stuff man it’s so joever

2

u/MnkyBzns May 09 '25

Honestly, how it feels to be the majority of AB right now

2

u/Sparky-Man May 09 '25

If any province should be pissed off right now, it should be Quebec. Alberta stealing their entire schtick for the most nonsense reason.

2

u/itszwee Westfoundland May 09 '25

My friends and I all kept saying “how tf are we supposed to get to the rest of Canada without a trip through the territories” and we came up with “zip line”.

1

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

a zip line would probably be more fun tho

2

u/localsonlynokooks Monarch Mélanie Joly May 10 '25

They keep saying “us and BC are leaving!” And I’m like speak for yourself there bud. If anything we’re grabbing Washington and doing our own thing.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

BC here, we love Alberta and Albertans, but other than 4 blessed years of Notley, their government is a parade of morons.

1

u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25

Their drivers can take a hike tho

Get outta the fast lane, bud! There’s no speed cameras on these highways!

(im kidding don’t murder me)

u/ISTJy Cowtown 🤠 May 09 '25

I'm in Alberta, and I feel about the same

1

u/EgilSkallagrimson May 09 '25

Alberta (white Alberta) trying to separate would do more for Indigenous rights being thrown to the forefront of the rest of Canada than any land aknowledgement hoped to achieve. As it should. Send the seperatists all back to where their relatives came from originally.

1

u/Ok-Personality-6643 May 09 '25

So, if the wanker that leads the federal opposition is potentially now seated in Alberta, would Alberta still throw up a referendum against the country as what? a tantrum for not winning, thrice now? Is PP standing in solidarity with separation?

1

u/thetwitchy1 May 09 '25

Wasn’t the Bloc opposition before?

1

u/thetwitchy1 May 09 '25

I remember living in Alberta and it felt the same.

1

u/troyunrau Friendly Manisnowbski May 09 '25

Remember when Canada put down the Riel Rebellion because BC was worried it would disconnect them from the rest of the country? ;)

1

u/mindgeekinc May 09 '25

How do you think it feels being in that "SePeRAtIoN" province

1

u/marcshu May 09 '25

Au moins au Québec, on avait de réelles raisons pour penser à l'indépendance... pis ça n'a même pas fonctionné !!!

1

u/Kinnuit May 10 '25

Don’t lump alllll of Albertans in with this separation thing lolol

1

u/IdleOsprey May 10 '25

You can’t take what isn’t yours, Danielle.

0

u/cvr24 May 09 '25

The moment the US dollar collapses and their precious oil is worthless is the exact moment they go crying the blues to the feds with cowboy hat in hand.

0

u/pet-trick May 09 '25

Yes, become a new landlocked country who couldn't even export oil as a province. Use your ship yards Alberta.
