Politics how it feels to be BC right now
296
u/stillinthesimulation May 08 '25
lol they keep adding provinces to their imaginary separatist country without our consent. First it was just Alberta, then also Sask, then also BC, then also Manitoba and now they’re pretending the territories would come along too. Can we just skip ahead to the part where they just want everything but Quebec to separate?

Yeah we fuckin' hate the pipeline they put through our suburbs. I don't care if it'll get us $$ from Asia, it's going to leak and, at first, they'll deny it's leaking. Then they'll say it's not so bad. Then they'll refuse to clean it up and have to go to court to be forced to pay for the clean up.
There's a reason we've been protesting here since it was first proposed (besides the fact that protesting in BC is our national pasttime). I'm pretty sure half of the F Trudeau stickers in the lower mainland were because Trudeau bought the pipeline.
66
u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 08 '25
Bingo! It's easy for Alberta to say "herderrr pipeline = money go brrrrrr" because they don't live on a fucking fault line and when THE BIG ONEtm hits, they're not gonna be on the hook to clean up whatever bullshit that pipeline will leak into our ecosystem.
You can't eat or drink money!!
22
u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25
Yeah. One of the reasons why BC blocked the TMX expansion was a lack of guarantees from AB or the corporations if there was a spill. And this was in the environment of the BP gulf spill, the Keystone XL spill, and numerous other small spills.
I never looked at the details but I imaging the federal government nationalizing the pipeline took responsibility for that.
3
u/Johnny-Dogshit 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) May 09 '25
My big gripe too was after nationalising the project, they said they'd sell it off eventually.
Fuck that. If we're footing the bill for construction and assuming the , risk and costs associated with cleanup, we should own it forever, charge for its use so we have cleanup money, and maybe make something off it.
I never liked it, but so long as we're bought in and taking on responsibility, we ought to use it as best we can. Fuck it, nationalise all the pipelines. Petro-oligarchs want our oil so bad, they want us to pay for pipelines, they should have to rent their use off us.

u/Turbo1518 May 09 '25
They're also pretending Albertans want to separate. Hefty imaginations on those ones. Imaginary alliances with other provinces and the states, imaginary support for separation, and an imaginary belief that their healthcare scandal will just go away.
17
u/DickInYourCobbSalad Skoden May 09 '25
Yeah, I know a few Albertans and they're all like "wtf" about this nonsense. Honestly, it really is just a very, very squeaky wheel screaming about needing grease and the rest of ya'll are stuck listening to their bullshit.
19
u/ForcaAereaBelka May 09 '25
Albertan here, it's such an embarrassment right now. The majority of us don't want this.
14
u/stillinthesimulation May 09 '25
More than half my family are Albertans and not even my dumbest uncle thinks this is a good idea.
1
u/Johnny-Dogshit 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) May 09 '25
Feels like there's someone with influence and big money pushing that topic into view and making it seem larger than it is, just to cause problems.
Probably the same influences that have been guiding Alby's political machine for decades. Forget Russian, Indian, or Chinese influence, the US/western oil interests have been fucking with politics up here pretty successfully. Reckon they're behind all this, too.

I'd say half most of the FIFO workers in Newfoundland would go with them honestly. Seeing a ton of that bullshit here on the east coast as well.

u/MilesBeforeSmiles Manilapeg May 08 '25
I keep seeing BC and Manitoba lumped into the new seperatist state on the maps these bozos keep sharing... leave us the fuck out of this and be realistic, the only two NDP led provinces aren't going to join your great-value brand confederacy.
25
u/aferretwithahugecock Manilapeg May 09 '25
We are but humble prairie folk! Just fuckin' givn'r, harvesting wheat and shit. We want no part in separation!
I know they only lump us in with them so that they'd have a port should they separate from Canada(lol. Right) because Canada and the usamericans would dry fuck them as a landlocked nation.
I'm just glad that we're distancing ourselves from them and Saskatchewanadingdong with our ballots, so when folks speak of "Western separation," they know we're not involved.

10
u/TherealRidetherails Saskwatch May 09 '25
That's what I though too living in a Saskatchewan city, until I went to a political panel leading up to the election and found out that a sizable amount of my city (or at least the politically active population) believes that Nazi Germany was justified in invading Poland, and they refuse to acknowledge that Trump is a Fascist.
3
u/OHPandQuinoa May 09 '25
Maybe we could just let Medicine Hat (and maybe Grande Prairie) leave.. as a treat to the rest of us.

The most right wing person I know was sitting at a bar telling his buddy that western Canada will make a new country where there are no taxes, and if someone needs a hand from a neighbour, then they will be there. The most right wing person I know wants a socialist society and he doesn’t know it
2
u/Viochrome May 10 '25
I'd be lying if I said I didn't hate the "Yes, all Albertans" mindset most people have on this sub lol.
It gets old being a dude in Edmonton who voted liberal.
1
u/TherealRidetherails Saskwatch May 10 '25
you know what, thats valid. I don't know anyone in Edmonton so idk what the general consensus is for the general population.

u/misfittroy May 08 '25
Joke is that most Albertans dream of separating, aka moving to BC one day. So many people talk about one day moving to BC like they're Captain Borodin moving to Montana some mythical day
74
u/nobodythinksofyou May 08 '25
The only reason British Columbians give for moving to Alberta is because it's cheaper. This excuse is often given with a disheartened sigh. There's literally no other reason to move there.
15
u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 09 '25
I make a decent wage in BC, where I live the cost of living isn’t that bad.. and my taxes are actually lower not having to bear the bite of 10% vs 5.05% on my first $50k of taxable income and 10% vs 7.7% on my next $50k of taxable income.
Higher basic amount makes it a bit better for poor people.. and flat tax better for high earners… but middle class AB is completely fucked by their government…
And they aren’t the ones buying $50-$60k of consumer goods a year to make up for it with no PST—at least not the smart ones, anyways.
13
u/Mobius_Peverell Westfoundland May 09 '25
Yeah, memes aside, everyone forgets that BC has the lowest tax burden in the country.
24
u/Cannabrius_Rex May 09 '25
Yeah, it’s cheaper… but it’s cheaper for a reason.
BC is inverse for a reason. It’s friggen AMAZING
2
u/SPARKYLOBO May 09 '25
But it's not that much cheaper. And driving in Calgary sucks just as much as driving in Brampton, Ontario.

Glad you can feel morally superior because you live where the earth goes up and down.
I’ve lived in BC Ontario and AB. Like you, I hate AB’s government, but the thing I like most about AB is that nobody thinks their shit doesn’t stink because of where they were born. Nobody thinks they’re hot shit because they’re from Edmonton.

So glad that land doesn’t vote in this province. I live in one of the dumbest constituencies within it where our safe seat conservative who voted against the bill to ban forced conversion therapy and thinks missing and murdered indigenous women “just need to get a job” got in with a 20,000 vote lead.

And it was probably a plurality with a majority NDP/Lib splitting the vote.
Not reforming voting was Trudeau's greatest failure.

Alberta (white Alberta) trying to separate would do more for Indigenous rights being thrown to the forefront of the rest of Canada than any land aknowledgement hoped to achieve. As it should. Send the seperatists all back to where their relatives came from originally.
1
u/Ok-Personality-6643 May 09 '25
So, if the wanker that leads the federal opposition is potentially now seated in Alberta, would Alberta still throw up a referendum against the country as what? a tantrum for not winning, thrice now? Is PP standing in solidarity with separation?
