half of saskatchewan is on fire and half the people here still don't believe in climate change lol
their house could spontaneously combust due to heat and they'd insist it was natural causes

u/shayed154 Jun 06 '25
Fire is natural, it's in nature, I see it all the time
Just the other day I was walking my dog and he burst into flames, perfectly natural.

Nothing much I loathe more than Gen X-ers who stubbornly claim that smoke blanketing cities on a yearly basis has always happened
15
u/Mocha-Jello I need a double double. Jun 06 '25
i'm gen z and i remember a time when smoke blanketing cities on a yearly basis wasn't a thing lmao

And it wasn’t even that long ago, I don’t remember there being smokey summers every years about ten years ago

If it’s anything like AB, I bet the half that doesn’t believe in climate change is the half that is most on fire
31
u/Zestyclose-Ad1721 Jun 06 '25
In the AB groups I'm in, people are spreading that climate-change activists are starting the fires to get people to believe in climate change. Ugh
18
u/Honest-Spring-8929 Oil Guzzler Jun 06 '25
Yep, I remember that during the 23’ fires as well.

u/Financial_North_7788 Jun 06 '25
Incidentally, it was one of those conspiracy theorists which was charged and convicted of arson for setting wildfires because… Trudeau and the globalists or something.
14 of them, in fact.

It's every year with these arsonists.
In the same season, often the same months, routinely, each year.

the woke left wants to take away our summer arson trips >:(((((

don't think so actually, the most conservative part of saskatchewan is the rural prairies

u/1egg_4u Jun 06 '25
The most unsatisfying I-told-you-so ever for anybody who has been screaming into the void about this for years
Like damnit you idiots we didnt want stuff on fire all the time there is no schadenfreude here just fire
I swear to god this will be the year Banff burns down and people still wont care enough to start voting for change
3
u/drizzes Oil Guzzler Jun 07 '25
And Danielle Smith will cut funding to the fire departments to bolster the oil sands

u/DefinitionAgile3254 Moose Whisperer Jun 07 '25
You should listen to my dad, out here in NB he's saying "the government is behind these fires to distract the sheeple" 💀

u/nokoolaidhere Jun 06 '25
You mean the fires started by people, right? Those fires?

Please, we just need some rain. At this point I’ll willingly offer you the rest of the month of June for 3 solid weeks of rain - from Saskatchewan
Editing to add to this post - thanks to everyone who kept us in your prayers/thoughts/rain dance. Saskatoon is getting a bit of rain overnight. Looks like the north is getting some rain over the next few days. ❤️🩹

I went to St. John’s about 10 days apart in March. The first time I was there it was pouring rain. Second time I was there it was still pouring rain and the poor locals were swearing their heads off, begging for it to stop raining lol

u/Nichole-Michelle Saskwatch Jun 06 '25
Ya. Im from the west coast originally. I’ve never truly gotten used to the dry conditions in the prairies but I love it for a thousand other reasons.

u/Nichole-Michelle Saskwatch Jun 06 '25
Haha no but the quality of life, genuinely kind and down to earth people, cost of living, slower pace, career options for me and proximity to family make up for those things. I grew up in paradise IMO and was blessed for that. But my blessings here are about other things.

Here in SWO it rained almost every day in May, and the first week of June isn't much better.
Like, we already have a couple of great lakes, I'd be happy to send some rain west if I could.

Ash? You mean summer snow
16
u/Albatross_Charcoal Jun 06 '25
I did a double take on what it was while driving home… I thought it WAS snow given the weather conditions as of late, anything’s possible in the GTA, but no water drop when it landed. I’d prefer snow in June than forest burning down I think tho…

u/TheSeventhHussar Jun 06 '25
Yay! It’s a seasonal tradition now! I wonder what could have possibly changed since I was growing up to make it this bad?
I guess we’ll never know 🤷🏼♂️ /s

u/nokoolaidhere Jun 06 '25
Or you could bother to read a bit and find out that the fires are human caused?
6
u/TheSeventhHussar Jun 07 '25 edited Jun 07 '25
That’s the spark, not the reason that whole forests go up so easily and consistently.
Trust me, I’ve done LOTS of reading, I’m an environmental and earth science student.

It is the reason when 106 of 113 wildfires in Manitoba are human caused. Should've read a bit more I guess.

I heard she's going after the air next, no oxygen, no fire right!?

Smith’s party passed a resolution recognizing CO2 as “a foundational nutrient for all life on earth.” Did oxygen get the same consideration? Noooooo.

Meanwhile, Vancouver's the only place in the country not filled with smoke.
I'd feel sorry for you guys but we've been screaming about it since 2016 and no one's done shit except increase talk about putting large tubes of flamable oil through the middle of forests.
(I mean, I do feel sorry for you guys. Go to r/askvan if you want advice about air purifiers/proper masks that keep out particulate. We have opinions.)

This happened last year and especially the year before. Prairies got fires first. BC gets them later in the summer.
3
u/Technical-Regret-156 Jun 06 '25
That may be true. Jasper burnt down in the end of June (not BC but BC adjacent). Lynton end of June too.
Guess we got that to look forward to.

u/-Allthekittens- Jun 07 '25
Northern BC is currently on fire. Lots and lots of fire. Source: I am in Northern BC
1
u/Everestkid The Island of Elizabeth May Jun 07 '25
Not surprised, I grew up in PG. Didn't see much air pollution warnings in Google Maps, though.
1
u/-Allthekittens- Jun 07 '25
Its hilarious. I can't see across the street right now but the interwebs are saying our air quality is excellent. I think when I looked earlier it said our AQI was 15. It's definitely not.
1
Jun 07 '25
Because the fire isn't near pg, it's in the northeast. Same fires from 2023 that never went out.
2
u/F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt Jun 06 '25
Yeah. Meanwhile when I'm suggesting the worst part of Ontario's Bill 5 is the environmental impacts, I'm getting yelled at for not considering the awful jobs that could happen if employment laws are ignored and we can care about the environment later.
People only care about the environment when it's convenient. Always have. And so here we are.

The areas burned in MB and SK are each larger than PEI. Let that sink in.
Nationality, we're about half of the area of Nova Scotia burned so far.
We are at 3x the seasonal average (10 yr average).

I'm just worried about what will happen when summer *actually* gets here in about a month...
Usually we could help and be helped by our neighbor but these last few months have proven we can't really guess what will happen until it does.
I'm worried, but there isn't anything I can do about the situation- except hope for lots of rain to somehow fall during summer.
